Missing out child from class photo

This morning when I dropped DS off at preschool they had laid out the class photo for parents to look at in order to decide if they wanted a copy. After looking twice I asked one of the teachers why DS wasn't in the photo. She was adamant that he was. I showed her the photo and she went a bit white. It's only a class of 12 with two teachers and two TAs that float between DS's class and another. All 4 staff members are in the photo. No DS. No explanation. I'm a bit miffed that he won't get a class photo but more concerned over his whereabouts during the photo. I'm not really sure what to do about it. Or if it's even worth causing a fuss over.

Wow, don't blame you for being "miffed"! Sad that you don't have him in the photo, but appalling that they seem to just mislay him while it was being taken.

I'd probably write to the Head actually, asking them to investigate what happened, and ensure their safeguarding policies are being upheld - ask them to tell you exactly what their procedure is for safeguarding, and demand to know how they are going to ensure that this does not happen again.

The fact that a child can somehow be missing is really really worrying. What if there was a fire or something?

I'd definitely be pushing them to explain where he was while the photo was being taken (assuming he was at school).

I certainly think you need to ascertain where he was when the photo was taken, if he was at nursery that day.

I'd be very upset too. At our school though the class photos are actually photos of 3 or 4 children taken in a small group pose and then all the small groups are photo shopped together to format a whole class photo. It might be that they mucked up organising the small groups rather than them not knowing where he was.

He was definitely there. I put him in a little bow tie for picture day. The teacher even remembered what he was wearing.

It is worth making a fuss over, not because your child wasn't in the photo, but because it appears that there was a period of time where no-one seems to know where your child was in a pre-school setting.

In these situations, I always find a 'could you give me some information....?' approach useful. ie to ask the head of nursery/EYFS for some information as to why no-one noticed that he wasn't in the picture, where he was at the time and who was responsible for looking after him, given that all the staff were in the photo.

This will be more effective than going in guns blazing.

Definitely not a photo shopped together one taken in small groups? Obviously annoying he was missed, but they still might be able to add him. If he was Awol then very worrying!

In these school threads I usually think the parent is over reacting, but definitely not in this one. I would be seeing the head about this.

I'd be asking further questions as to his whereabouts while the group photo was taken.

I'm hoping by the time he's picked up they have a better answer. The photo didn't look photoshopped and I would have thought the teacher I spoke to this morning would have said if they had done it in small groups. She just kept saying "it's not possible" all while looking more and more worried.

Gosh, I hope you get some answers OP.

Was it a formal standing in lines type photo (like our old class photos would be) or a more casual grouping? The more casual ones are almost all photoshopped these days and look pretty good.

We had a child missed out on our preschool photo. There is was because it was photoshopped and the photographer had got crossed wires about one of the groupings (long and identifying story) but she can be put back into the final version.

Really hoping that the playleader was just panicking in the 'how can we have forgotten to put him in a group' way and he wasn't actually wandering around on his own. It is horrible to feel your kids weren't safe.

I was all set up to explain about children who cannot be included in photos that go outside of school to other families and being adopted but wow, essentially they lost your child and can't account for it.

Can you ask if the photographer has other out-takes and see if your DS is on them and just sneezed or bent down to pick up fluff off the floor etc on that particular photo trying to think of a reasonable explanation

If he's not in any of the out-takes, definitely one to be escalated in the school.

I have seen the OP on loads of threads since. Hopefully there was a simple explanation and she forgot to update. I imagine if it was as serious as it first seemed she would have been back. Because if it was that bad it was pretty bad.
