As part of my preps and checking i still have everything I need for a power cut ( all our torches had disappeared! I'm now checking my power banks. So far the two I have checked are down to about 10% capacity. So i need to buy new. I think ideally I'd get one new power bank every few years as mine are ten years old. But in reality if they are all well under 50% I'd be better recycling all of them and getting one new 20000 and one 10000 and starting again and then gradually over the next few years by one yearly. The one in my handbag only changes my phone to 20%!

I've got an Anker powerbank that I use every day to recharge my smartwatch due to a lack of plugs in my bedroom, it's not the kind you can carry in your handbag, it's the size of a small brick & quite heavy but only needs recharging every other week, it will recharge my phone from 40% to full in an hour. It was £70 on Amazon.

The Anker Zolo 20000 is excellent and reasonably priced on Amazon.

I need a better one. I have a lightweight one which I carry in my handbag for emergencies but it runs down very quickly. Ideally I would like a solar one but those I have bought in the past have been poor

I've just realised that my six year old wind up radio/torch/ charger has the wrong sized socket for my current phone charger cable. Does anyone know if you can get alternative cables that will fit both phone and charger?
And also do power banks have various sized sockets for different devices?

My older power banks are micro USB but the newer ones are type C it seems

I am in the replacement phase now.

I am confused. Can you get power banks that use actual batteries that can be replaced? Otherwise you are still reliant on having power aren't you? Or are we just thinking in terms of a short power cut?

Yes you can buy cables with one end say USB-A and the other USB-C so you can connect devices. An example from Amazon:

I've seen one on amazon but the reviews weren't great.

You would also need a small solar panel with which to charge the power brick. Otherwise you would need to charge it in your car.
I’ve just bought a 2000w power station, meant for camping / caravanning.
Got it for £375 instead of £440, it’s an Aerify one. Will get a 500w solar panel for it when I see a decent price on prime day etc.
It would run my fridge freezer for a few hours a day and run my heated blankets, charge up my lamps and allow me to watch downloads or read on my tablet.

It can run short term up to a 3600w appliance, so a kettle, microwave or even an electric radiator.
Don’t forget that a prolonged major outage will see mobile phone towers die so there would be no service after a few days and because they got rid of copper phone lines and house phones that didn’t need power, for more ‘efficient’ digital ones, they won’t work either.
