Certificates - What would you grab?

I have been sorting out our filing and it has made me think about what we would grab if we had to leave with little notice.

I find myself remembering interviews with Rohingya refugees where people were asked what they bought with them. Men often had degree certificates and deeds to land whereas the women often just had themselves and their children. It really stayed with me.

It makes me wonder if we need a small separate file of birth certificates, degree certificates and deeds that could be grabbed very quickly.

I have all that stuff in a fireproof bag

Scan it all onto a memory stick?

taxguru · 28/05/2024 19:44

Yes, would be good to have that easily to hand for a quick grab, but why not scan them and upload them to the cloud as well so you'd be able to access images from anywhere, anytime, which would make it a lot easier to get copies of actual paper documents if they were ever needed. Not much benefit in having them only in paper if you house catches fire whilst you're out!

Very good points about scanning them into the cloud!

@bellinisurge I’ve been having a look at fireproof bags

I keep originals of important certificates in a small fire proof box at the bottom of the chest freezer.

I have two sets of scanned and printed documents, one is stored in my lockup, the other is my "using" set. So for example we are off on our jollies in the end of July. I have a scanned copy of our passports & driving licences in a small document bag, just in case we lose the originals.

As I really do not trust electronic storage (Carrington or cyber are both a concern of mine) I really do not put much effort into this. I have an external hard drive at my mothers that I up load my accounts and documents too every time I visit her.
