Children moving out

Ok, adult children (20 & 22) moving out of our huge house, to their own flats. Ok storage, but not like home obviously. What would you make sure they had? Trying to convince them to at least have some water bottles (tap water is excellent here). Fourth/third floor, no elevator, so have bought fire blankets, fire extinguisher and fire alarms. Extra batteries. Medicines. Not more I can actually do, is there..? 😭 What did you do, if you’ve had your dc moving out?

First aid kit?

fleur89 · 13/09/2023 15:21

Replacements for light bulbs and alarms, a toolkit, extension cables for plug sockets, the right chargers for electronics, basic appliances, enough bedding / towels / crockery / cutlery, blackout curtains (a must for me!), drain catcher things for showers and kitchen sink

Got all of those apart from light bulbs. Good idea too!

I had none of those things when l moved out.

Yet I’m still here!

But that doesn't matter. Some people like to be prepared.

We live in a rural village so we have all the previously mentioned plus a head torch, much easier and a solar charged power bank.

Yeah thanks. Neither did I. I moved abroad when I was 19 and spent 5 years traveling. But this is the prepper board.

moving out kit would definitely be:
over the counter meds such as paracetamol, ibuprofen, decongestants. (plus stuff for things they are prone too)
first aid kit.
cleaning kit. (dishcloths, dusters, tea towels, washing up brush and sponge, gloves, anbtibac that cleans everything rather than lots of products)
sewing kit
iron
shoe polish kit
fire saftey (you've got covered) fire resistant document box.
power cut kit. (torch/lantern /head torch/power bank, warm blanket, handwarmers, woolly hat/gloves) batteries
charger and wires, extension cable,
alarm clock
basic tool kit, (screwdrivers, pliers, small hammer, tape measure)
crockery, cutlery, two pans and a frying pan, baking sheet and roasting dish, sharp knife, chopping board, tin opener, fish slice, wooden spoon, ladle, slotted spoon, colander/sieve)
condoms,

Roll of duct tape, tape measure, cable ties perhaps a small box of assorted nails and screws. Suggest they look for the gas tap, fuse box and stop cock so that they know where they are before they actually need them.

caringcarer · 13/09/2023 21:45

My adult DS moved out into his own house about a month ago. I gave him Paracetamol, Ibuprofen, Hot lemon flu sachets, soothers, Compreed blister plasters and a mini first aid kit with plasters, antiseptic wipes and a couple of bandages. I also gave him a bag and told him to go into the conservatory where I have shelves of cleaning products and take 1 of each. He took a Harpic black toilet cleaner, bottle of Flash, fly spray, kitchen worktop spray, bathroom spray cleaner, some soft sponges, cloths, washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets, comfort, air fresheners x 4, washing powder. He also found and took tin foil, greaseproof paper, freezer bags and plastic sandwich bags.
I took him to a very very large shop including a lot of frozen food. DH gave him batteries, a few old tools like a tape measure, a hammer and an old power drill, wall plugs of various sizes, picture hanging hooks and a carbon monoxide alarm. He has only moved 3 miles away and already keeps a good torch in his car.

grenadeapple · 14/09/2023 18:30

@caringcarer That is exactly what dd did. A big ’shop’ of all those things you mention in our garage. And lots of soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes. 😅

Duct tape! Of course! Got loads of it. How could I forget!

Great lists!

I'll add scissors (kitchen and general)

Possibly sellotape and glue?

grenadeapple · 14/09/2023 22:37

As I’m not in the UK I can tell you about one unusual thing I stock up on when there, Vicks stick inhaler! Forbidden here for 20 years or so, but is so good during winter! 😂

I’m thinking even a proper old fashioned A-Z map. Of the country and local areas.

Has anyone said cable ties?

Tbh you've just got to let them get on with it, they may not have the prepped gene 🤣

tiredandolderthanithought · 15/09/2023 12:40

Or are they called tie wraps 🤔
