Had a fun trip to A&E recently. All ok but I learned some prepping lessons.

Grabbed my mini rucksack of stuff in case I needed an overnight stay. Like a genius, I had a fully charged up power bank. Like a eejit. I had taken out the cable with it for something a while ago and not replaced it.
Other stuff that was great for my looooong wait in A&E - paperback book, lip salve, boiled sweets.
Other stuff that would have been great - baby wipes (these are in my DH's and DD's bags so I assumed some genius action similar to the mislaid cable had occurred.
Bottle of water. Again, the great cable mishap applied. Going to find some mini bottles to put in all 3 bags.
I have toiletries and a change of clothes, eye mask, ear plugs. Luckily I didn't need them.

Do you have such a bag? What's in it?

I was having a bit of a medical crisis and was pleased I could literally grab and go with this bag.

I also have a spare bit of HRT meds because the world does not need me without them.

Flip flops. (Thanks preppers as I had them ready)

Chamomileteaplease · 09/11/2022 16:10

Charger with the longest possible lead as sometimes the socket is a distance from the bed/table.

If you are going to A&E, these days your own bed would be handy 😦.

Flip flops are a great idea but I actually have a problem with them. My current plan would be to load around in my socks but I was thinking only last night about getting fold up slippers.

Hospital wards (maybe not A&E) often have those red slipper socks, so I don't think slippers necessary. Flip flops handy for the showers though.

I don't have a grab bag but would def have some long-dated snacks in there!

tickticksnooze · 09/11/2022 16:53

Slipper socks. They won't let you walk around in normal socks in case you slip and fall.

Charger, meds, ear plugs, headphones, blanket, clothes, entertainment, emergency contact details written down, spare toiletries Inc toothbrush and hairbrush, snacks... Can't remember what else.

RandomCatGenerator · 09/11/2022 16:56

I used to keep a bag like this and would keep photocopies of ID too, just in case it was ever needed and my phone happened fo have died. It was actually a helpful thing to have on more than one occasion.

bellinisurge · 09/11/2022 17:06

@tickticksnooze , you are right about socks. I'll get some foldable slippers although that's a good point about showers and flip flops. Maybe I'll get over my aversion to flip flops to save space

Dec. 2020. I got caught out when DH was admitted to hospital in an emergency, we had three paramedics, and ambulance and a fast response vehicle in attendance and when the crew said they were blue lighting him in and could I quickly pack a bag for him I was totally thrown off balance. My head was in the shed.
I couldn’t find any PJ’s, he doesn’t wear them usually but has an emergency pair. Could I find them? No.
Aware of the words “ blue lighted and quickly “ I picked up a Tesco carrier bag and began to throw in T shirts, pairs of shorts, pairs of undies, socks. Until my daughter said “Mam, you can’t send him in with a plastic bag”, she found a rucksack and we used that.He had his slippers on and was dressed thankfully. But I forgot his shaving stuff, toiletries, dressing gown.
He had his phone and as he was being wheeled out a paramedic came back in and asked for his charger.
Emergency bag is now sitting at the bottom of the wardrobe containing hospital essentials.

My new hospital bag includes wipes, a bottle of water, and a plastic mug. The last ward I was on had no facilities for patients to wash, shower, or clean their teeth. The sinks in the toilets were tiny, almost too small to wash your hands.

mawik · 18/12/2022 23:48

Having spent a week in hospital unexpectedly, I would have to say top of my list is tweezers!! And a decent mirror! After 7days I was starting to resemble a werewolf 🙈
i have packed a small usb fan, along with long usb charger.
baby wipes are essential!
and earplugs for iPad!
oh and my best hack… if you have visitors get them to use thier hotspot to download some programs for you!

bellinisurge · 19/12/2022 10:08

Tweezers is a good call. My mum had a protracted stay in hospital after a medical emergency and it was high on her list
