Just for fun and to lighten the load of preparedness I wondered......
If we could smell SHTF and, let's say we were in a full blown scenario, so it stinks to high heaven, we gave that stink a score of 10. On the flip side there is no SHTF and we're all frolicking about semi naked in a field of flowers so we give that scenario a score of 0. What is the stink like now for you good people?
I'll go first, to me I'm smelling a strong 7.

RoseAndRose · 22/09/2022 20:39

SHTF??????

TheNoonBell · 22/09/2022 21:31

SHTF = Poo Hits The Fan
TEOTWAWKI = The End Of The World As We Know It

I'd say 7 is reasonable but rapidly heading to 8 as winter approaches and the reality of living in a rapidly decarbonising society starts to sink in with the populations of Western, Central and Eastern Europe.

Legoandloldolls · 22/09/2022 21:39

As a prepper surely your never 0?

I'm a 4. Happy on the Ilse of denial right now. I was thinking again yesterday that if we get nuked my problems are over so that's a zero.

Cost of living? Maybe a 7 but I'm reasonably ready. No heated blankets but I'm going to try normal fleeces and our primark oodies.

Impending doom from natural disasters? 2.

So yep, ready, concerned, not in a panic. Not happy to be in a constant state of fear. I'm like a dear looking at the lion. I see it, there's enough other dear between me and it. I have time to spare to run. I'm there. Rightly or wrongly

bellinisurge · 23/09/2022 08:15

I'm smelling around 5. I'm getting a whiff of something (like Joey and his fart acting in Friends) but I'm mostly distracting myself with "we made it through the 70s/80s, it'll be fiiiiiiiine". That and my certainty that we can manage without the grid (heat/cook/light) in our house for a couple of weeks in winter. It's the "after a couple of weeks" that is probably the source of the smell. That and the stuff that will go off in the fridge/freezer because that's something I can't prep for.

myleftventricle · 23/09/2022 10:03

The thought of frolicking semi-naked in a field of flowers puts me straight at 10! Sat here at my desk with a cup of tea I'm at a solid 6. Occasionally rising to a 7 but only when I read on Mumsnet about the world coming to an end this weekend. I'm thinking hard about how to cope in potential multiple blackouts this winter and feeling comfortable about it - I just need to assess what I've got for different scenarios and practice a few things.

BlackeyedSusan · 23/09/2022 16:37

We have had a personal shtf situations recently (the usual shit things that can happen in every day life) so I am not up on world shtf situations. Reading with interest.

FoolShapeHeart · 23/09/2022 20:45

6-7 is my default setting for the last few years. I've been distracted lately with Fool & MiniFool stuff, so I'm not as well-read on the world ending tomorrow as I'd usually be.

EveningOverRooftops · 23/09/2022 21:56

This depends.

If you’ve got good neighbours and you all agree it’s a good idea to dig communal long drops and to dispose of your waste appropriately and switch as quickly as possible to the reusable stuff then you’ll be circling around 4-5.

if you have a crap community who won’t accept any sort of leadership and community collaboration you’ll be at a 8 upwards within a week. And the rats… the rats will be the worst.

this is why the knowledge is important to learn. You can avoid a lot of the worst stuff just by knowing how to do it right.

NoRatsHere · 23/09/2022 22:07

A comfortable 3. Have about 3 months of food in. Alternative energy sources. Fantastic community and… I’ve NC because I live in a place in the UK with no rats. They’ve come ashore from wrecks but for whatever reason can’t survive.

BrownOrangeRed · 23/09/2022 22:15

Probably a 8 right now, although once I finish my checklist over the next couple of weeks I'll probably be down to a 2/3

Airymanning · 25/09/2022 22:47

Shtfday · 27/09/2022 07:35

I am a 5 i think -
Winter / cost of living - we have source of heating and lighting options we have food that would last 6 weeks. and a way we could cook it for a short while. Organising it now and hope its not needed but we have it as an option.
We have cut our electric usage where we can.

Russia threat - trying to switch off from as nothing can do if SHTF in this way.

We do have a good community here but not sure what would happen if things got terrible. I think it would be ok in a moderate situation but could easily turn to dog eat dog in a bad case situation.

TheScorpionandtheFrog · 27/09/2022 11:28

6 has been my default since Brexit, this winter I think it will go up to 8.
I live in the inner city, and people are stressed about fuel bills and the cost of food. More people seem to be panic buying, and the shelves of bottled water are often empty. There are more people begging and they look hungry & ill, thin with grey skin. There was a tent city outside of the local supermarket, they've been moved on. The local parks all smell of piss and have a problem with human waste. Its difficult to get an ambulance, or to see a doctor or dentist. Things are actually pretty bad here.

TheNoonBell · 27/09/2022 16:12

Huge news. Someone just blew up the two Russian gas pipelines to Germany Nord Stream 1 and 2. We may now see other tit for tat undersea infrastructure getting blown (gas, oil, internet etc). Germany is really going to struggle for energy in the near future. Germany will start to put troops on the streets on Saturday to help police stop potential civil unrest (this was announced in August).

I think we are now firmly in 8 territory.

bellinisurge · 28/09/2022 14:13

Yeah, starting to smell a bit stronger, isn't it

BlackeyedSusan · 28/09/2022 16:34

Well Der...(sorry) gas leak:smell!

Grin

interesting report regarding Sweden having monitored seismic profile explosions regularly previously on the radio last night.

BlackeyedSusan · 28/09/2022 16:35

Sorry yet to have the brain power to formulate an answer.

BlackeyedSusan · 28/09/2022 16:40

Things I have really noticed: record breaking temp this summer. Drought, change in weather patterns

Canada is having quite a run of extreme weather events.

There were reports on the increasing speed of melting of important glaciers recently. Florida is getting high tide flooding.

BlackeyedSusan · 28/09/2022 16:45

...also politically here. Entryism in the conservative party has moved it to the right, lots of more central conservatives booted out..more authoritarian laws being brought in such as reducing judicial reviews, protests etc. Breaking the law on prorogation, international treaties, etc. Labour and lib Dems have gone woke such that they will not allow democratic debate and are chucking womens rights away and are downright racist in prioritising one group to the detriment of others.

BlackeyedSusan · 28/09/2022 17:00

Ukraine situation. And other local countries that have bits annexed.

Supply issues, energy.instability. defence. Putin ain't going to go quietly. There is risk of another Chernobyl like incident.

BlackeyedSusan · 28/09/2022 17:03

Internationally we are trashing our reliability reputation, have become more isolated, are currently risking our international monetary stability.

snowballupahill · 28/09/2022 17:18

Think there are two critical events today - BOE having to protect the collapse of pension funds because of the recent economic changes and agree re gas pipe lines explosions. Also noted the the Norwegians are concerned about drones and their energy plants. Concerning in that the UK does get rather a lot of its energy (as a percentage) from Norway. Not entirely sure what we can do about that one other than fingers crossed UK Govt has revised its energy plan recently..

BlackeyedSusan · 29/09/2022 14:15

yeah, it'll be an open fire, burning the evidence...

OP posts:
BlackeyedGruesome · 16/11/2022 07:50

I just finished stashing a load of firewood in the garage to dry. I thought of that as I heard that Putin had bombed infrastructure again and of the missile in Poland. Wondering whether we were going to be in a similar situation.
