How to store cooking oil?

Hi Everyone,

I’ve been lurking on the preppers board for a while, loads of great tips here :)

One thing I tried was storing cooking oil, I bought extra sunflower oil (it was sold in plastic bottles) and stored it in the garage where it remained untouched for 2-3 months. Then I noticed all the bottles were leaking. I checked the one bottle I had stored in my kitchen, the plastic was warped and distorted.

Has everyone else been decanting their cooking oil into a different container for storage? Or do people store it in the plastic bottle it was sold in, like I did? If the latter, has anyone else’s leaked?

TIA x

I have a large flagon of olive oil and one of sunflower oil - the sort that store 5 litres. I've had them a couple of years. They're plastic, stored upright and not touching anything. They aren't in a room that ever gets particularly warm. They've not leaked at all.

My usual oil comes in one or two litre tins and I decant into one of those bottles with a pouring nozzle. They tins don't leak either.

Sorry your bottles are leaking - could you get one or two of those very large glass bottle things that people make beer in? You can get proper rubber bungs for them.

Hi FlipFlops,

Thanks so much, that’s really helpful. It’s just as I was beginning to suspect, people are decanting their cooking oil to store it in a more robust container.

If you - or any other posters here - would like to put up some links of flagons or other suitable containers for cooking oil, that’d be greatly appreciated!

Mine just sit in their bottles. They have never leaked. I pour them into smaller bottles when I want to use them.

Never had any trouble and I have stored them for years. Was the garage very hot recently and could that have caused the oil to expand and burst?
