Hello all,
Bit late to the party here. Aldi was so empty yesterday! Hardly any fruit and veg. No tomatoes! Even other supplies were low. No sunflower oil at all !!

is that because of Easter holidays or ??

do I need to stock up asap!?

I read somewhere that sunflower oil will be in short supply because of the war in Ukraine.

QuebecBagnet · 20/04/2022 17:45

Sunflower oil is because of Ukraine. But there should be rapeseed oil or veg oil instead. I haven’t noticed many shortages. Coop had no iceberg lettuce today but tesco did.

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 20/04/2022 17:46

The majority of the sunflower oil comes from Ukraine . Last few times I've been to tesco I've seen people with massive bottles of it . One even had about 6 massive bottles in her trolley ! I'm off to sainsbury's in a mo I'll have a look
My local lidl fruit an veg was very empty this morning now you mention it , but I find it turns too quickly so I dont buy from there

Neverreturntoathread · 20/04/2022 17:46

Is weird. Our massive Sainsburys had no salad at all on Sunday. Vegetables, but no lettuce / watercress / rocket / bags of leaves etc. sounds silly when I write it down but there must have been 15-18 totally empty shelves that are normally full of salad.

Jonny1265 · 20/04/2022 17:50

You won't see sunflower oil for a good while. Blame Putin for that🙄

Echo40 · 27/04/2022 22:00

My Aldi on the whole ok apart from oil, bread flour and sanitary towels.

My lilds on other hand dire
Patchy produce
Half empty frozen
No oils, eggs, ketchup , beans, tinned tomatoes, passatta puree; coffee, sanitary towels or dog food.

User112 · 28/04/2022 19:04

Can I gently suggest people consider reusable sanitary products?

Echo40 · 28/04/2022 21:17

I don't know aldi and lilds both do slim 14 pack for 49p.
They out stock for weeks both shoos maybe they have same supplier.
They are a lot more expensive in other supermarkets and aldi only had always double pack £2 .45 which i brought as we nearly ran out i have 2 teenage daughters.

Will investigate reusable as used cloth nappies when they babies.

Seeing in Germany how aldis had no chopped tomatoes worried me..
Ours has some for now but lilds been out for a week.
I get oils, flour, fresh produce shortage.

But things like pads , tomatoes, ketchup, noodles i don't get..
Rice seems fine but pasta is very patchy my aldi.
Never has the 20 p spagetti or the 29p penne anymore lucky morrisions does .

You can get a good budget range of reusables from Precious Stars. There are fancier options available-by various independent makers - or you can make them yourselves quite easily starting with material you probably have in the house - fleece, old towels, cotton fabric. There are loads of cool and sometimes free patterns and tutorials online. Fancier materials and fabric also available but start simple and cheap.

Not quite sure of the exact products that go in sanitary protection, but I read there's going to be an issue with paper products this year - I think a reasonable amount of pulp comes from Russia and also it costs a lot of energy to produce. Cheaper ranges of tissues and toilet rolls haven't been available in our local for weeks.

If they contain any cotton, that could be an issue as they were on about cotton going up in price, so maybe manufacturers are having to renegotiate prices and it's slowed down production for a short while.

Period knickers. They are so good, honestly if you haven't tried them you really must. Primark do them now too but I don't know how good they are.

TheChurchOfEli · 29/04/2022 16:03

We get most of our tomatoes from Netherlands and Spain. Spain has had bad rain and Lorry driver strikes. Energy prices have soared so greenhouse grown Tom’s are on the way out. They’re pretty easy to grow your own. And much tastier
