Hi everyone, I'm a procrastinating wannabe prepper but a scary experience today has gave me a kick up the arse to get organised!

I came off the road in my car in snow, up a hill (exposed), about 15 miles from the nearest village and with no phone signal this morning. Was able to walk far enough to call for help and the SOS on my car got my location. I was utterly shitting it incase nobody could get to me and was pretty shaken. I was finally rescued by a kind lorry driver after about 45 minutes and will be avoiding this route in future. There was no snow at ground level so very scary how it changed so quickly and it was a single track road with drops on each side so I couldn't safely turn.

I do a lot of semi rural/rural travel for work so I would feel better if I had a kit in the car just incase. I would definitely keep a change of clothes as I was glad of the dry clothes I had for work after I got wet walking in the snow. Any other suggestions would be very welcome. My main worry was what if I'd been injured and couldn't walk to get help. Thanks in advance for any advice xx

For the car, winch, tow rope + folding spade (entrenching tool)

Winter tyres and a bag of grit and a spade.
Also consider a lesson or two about how to drive in the snow Smile

Thank you all. I've been googling based on all your reccs and planning my kit! Sadly a 4WD is way out of my budget but I agree a snow driving lesson would be good!

You'd be best off investing in winter tyres and snow chains. Not getting stuck in the first place is better than being able to survive getting stuck.

(I do a lot of rural driving on snow btw, in various 2 wheel drive cars over the years. Have never been stuck, but I fit winter tyres to my car every year and always carry snow chains and a shovel.)

I’ve kitted myself out with most of these. I’d just like to add the following that haven’t been mentioned:
Rubber gloves
Rubber mallet (to strike your wheel all round if you need to change the tyre as chances are it will be stuck fast - from experience)
Pocket plastic macs
Tissues
Plastic bags
Towel
I also have a heavy duty power pack with clamps to start vehicles up when the battery is flat. It also has a very powerful torch and powers/charges devices.

I've always resorted to kicking it!

Thanks for the new suggestions. I've started a little pack in the car and gathering the items suggested! Oh, and I'm avoiding the back roads too!

Do you have winter tyres?

Also a bag of cat litter to spread under tyres to get some friction
