Getting through Autumn/Winter 21/22

I have been checking this board daily for weeks, to see whether there were any new threads about the upcoming Autumn and Winter specifically. Prepping now is more important than ever, everything has gone awry, no certainties anymore, supply chains, energy, food. And the jury is still out on whether the Winter will be a front-loaded freezing one or not (hopefully not).
I think basically everything we prepped for Brexit is now valid again, more than previously actually.
If anyone more established wants to start the Winter thread I will happily have this one deleted. 🙂

Ooh thanks for the reminder and link OYBBK. I hadn't gotten round to dipping into your Winter Watch weather thread this year yet.

InvincibleInvisibility · 28/10/2021 13:16

Oooh your cat looks just like mine when I was little. she was gorgeous - mix between persian and british shorthair. Lovely character too

RainbowZebraWarrior · 28/10/2021 13:46

He's a Red Point Ragdoll. Very very cuddly and warm. Comes into the bed every morning for snuggles in between me and DD.
Everybody should really have one on their winter Prep list! Halloween Grin

OMG @InvincibleInvisibility they are so similar! ❤

InvincibleInvisibility · 29/10/2021 06:41

She also had gorgeous blue eyes like yours. Gave me a bit of a shock when I saw your photo! Enjoy the cuddles with your beautiful kitty

InvincibleInvisibility · 29/10/2021 06:43

My mum thinks she had a bit of ragdoll in her too as she would just relax when picked up.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 29/10/2021 09:01

There's definite ragdoll in there, no doubt about that. Mine looks exactly like yours when he's lying on the duvet. Has the very same tips of ears and tail colouring which is quite unusual anyway. Hope you're ok and it hasn't upset you.

InvincibleInvisibility · 29/10/2021 11:59

No its been a lovely trip down memory lane. Smile And has made me want to get a cat! But DH is allergic and we live in a flat...

NotMyCat · 29/10/2021 21:07

I've built shelving for my hair/body products and also to hold cleaning products and back ups of anything on offer (cat food, bin bags etc)
I took a picture and it looks.. a lot BlushBlushBlush

I am cautious about the chinese stockpiling headlines - wondering what repercussions it will have around the world. Probably a ripple effect, with China buying more food from the surrounding countries, and there being less to export to europe, unless we pay higher prices. So our prices may rise dramatically. I found the news quite odd, as even during peak covid in 2020 there was no such state decree. Rumours abound on twtr.

@NotMyCat I also built something similar. It was a thing of beauty and very tidy. I think it took me back to my love of playing shops as a child. I'd love to see a pic, but understand if you don't want to share. Mines ended up being a mess now as I've stuffed Christmas presents, cards and extra crisps among it all.

@AppleButter that is a bit worrying isn't it? This winter is going to prove challenging for sure (and beyond!) I'll go and have a look at the rumours on Twitter.

NotMyCat · 03/11/2021 11:45

@RainbowZebraWarrior here you go

OMG I am loving that @NotMyCat ❤ I also have a thing about the Garnier Hair Food and buy one of each 'flavour' every time they are on offer!

NotMyCat · 03/11/2021 11:57

It's not the tidiest but it's in my spare room which nobody sees as it's also my wardrobe too!

AppleButter · 03/11/2021 19:44

@NotMyCat that is a very tidy shelf. You definitely have enough toiletries to get you through the winter 😂 - but i really like how organised it is.

I did it in sections!
Shelf for conditioner, shelf for body care, one for candles... BlushBlush

How is everyone doing? We've been hit by the storm already. (Am in NE England - right in the middle of the current Red weather warning) I've spent the day trouble shooting. Checked stock, got candles and torches ready. Thicker socks out, extra hot water bottle also dug out. Cleaned the stove out and built a fire ready for later tonight. Filled the log basket from the log store. Misplaced the firelighters so trying out BlackeyedSusans tip of cotton wool dipped in vaseline.

It all seems quite doom and gloom in the news at the minute. Winter weather, price increases and gaps on shelves, new variant. So I think I'm just trying to feel like I'm staying in control by doing what I can to cover all eventualities.

FoolShapeHeart · 29/11/2021 09:33

How did you get on @RainbowZebraWarrior? We're in the red zone too - feeling lucky that we escaped with some wind damage but power & water remained working.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 29/11/2021 11:07

@FoolShapeHeart

How did you get on *@RainbowZebraWarrior*? We're in the red zone too - feeling lucky that we escaped with some wind damage but power & water remained working.
Lots of trees down locally. My fence went over and shed door off. All neigbours have had tiles off roofs, but mine survived thankfully. Like you, power remained too.

Really really icy here today. I've ordered a grit bin, shovel and grit from Amazon.

Hope everyone else ok. I'm a bit behind with the present shopping. Mostly due to DD reaching that age of being difficult to buy for.

K9medic · 19/12/2021 17:25

We got off lucky with the Storm, lost 3 slates of the roof, but gained 3 fence pannels from the neighbor and a compost bin that nobody claiming.

On the bright side, we lost the power for about 12 hours so now "She who should be obeyed" is more on board with my prepping habit.

I had completed the normal winter stuff, like rodding the drains, cleaning out the gutters, tidying the garden and serviced the vehicles before storm Arwen hit. Yes, there is a lot more I could do, both inside and out, but sadly I have not won the Euro Lotto so it's still a work in progress.

I think we are in for a cold winter with the possibility of snow rather than rain. I have two open fires in the house (The stove should be going in early Jan) with plenty of wood already cut. replaced the empty gas cylinder so that gives me two large cylinders and a lot of smaller ones for the camp cooker.

Lights are by battery and or sola, yes we have candles, but with 3 kids and 2 loopy dogs, I prefer batteries.

To be honest, other than trying to find a 4x4 run around I am reasonably happy with my prepping at the moment.

BlackeyedSusan · 20/12/2021 12:57

Come here to sit on my fingers. Nearly two years into the pandemic and some people are still being caught out by having to isolate. :(

K9medic · 20/12/2021 16:05

What scares me is the amount of people who i know and I always thought of as inteligent, who have told me that either they are bored with it all or because the Goverment (allegedly) had a party last year, they are having Christmas parties this year.

K9medic · 21/12/2021 17:16

I don't know if any of you have seen the latest Covid broadcast from the BBC yet, but I think we can add lockdown or at least severe restrictions to our list before Old Years Night.

I'm basing this prediction on the Chancellor anouncing £1bn package of help for the hospitality industry, Scotland canceling a lot of Old Years Night celebrations and putting a cap of 500 on outdoor events such as football and 200 on indoor events.

Add this to the Irish and Welsh restrictions announced earlier in the Month and what is happening on the Continent and it makes more restrictions a safe bet.

BlackeyedSusan · 22/12/2021 18:22

Yeah. Sounds likely. Wanted school shoes for D's but rather see my mum in care home. Will risk shoes.
