Though it might be useful to share the average best before dates on foods so we know what to order and roughly how long it will last. Especially useful for those who are relying on buying through click and collect or delivery.

Morrisons mince meat jars: August 2022

OP posts:
Antirrhinum · 03/12/2020 16:41

Not food, but I have some paracetamol dated June 2025!

goldenharvest · 03/12/2020 16:54

Out of interest, what are you prepping for?

QueenPaws · 03/12/2020 17:00

@goldenharvest people prep for different things
Having to self isolate/illness
Pandemics!
Power cuts
Snow storms

I prep just because it's how I shop. So take peanut butter, I always eat it. So if i spot it's on offer, I buy a jar whether i "need" it or not. Then I have spare, so I don't ever have to buy it at the higher price. Plus if I'm unwell, can't get a shop, having a skint month etc I just eat out the cupboards/freezer, use stuff up and then replace as and when
Came in handy in March/April when I couldn't get a food delivery for a month!

Diversion · 03/12/2020 17:24

Corned beef, tinned tuna and tinned mackerel always have long dates, often 2-3 years.

duffeldaisy · 03/12/2020 19:23

I've been amazed by tinned, sliced mushrooms. They seem to be okay for 3 years or so. Most types of bean have quite long dates too, and rice tends to be for a couple of years - so I figure it's possible to survive on those for quite some time.
Sugar and salt are pretty indefinite too.

BlackeyedSusan · 03/12/2020 20:49

Pringles are about a year from manufacture.

OP posts:
fairydustandpixies · 03/12/2020 21:04

I stumbled on a website today offering a tinned meals package for about £1300, enough to provide a meal a day for a year with a BB of 25 years!! My jaw nearly broke when it hit the floor - now that is prepping!

goldenharvest · 03/12/2020 21:05

@QueenPaws O dear god! DH has been a preppier for years then. I just call it hoarding! We have a fridge freezer in the kitchen and 2 freezers in the garage, plus a beer fridge in the garage when the fridge part is full. Plus cupboards full of food in tins etc. He likes to shop and will buy bags of food and they rarely see the light of day. He has a 2 year old Christmas pudding and a pancotta thing of the same age. Don't dare open either. I know what you mean about the bargains though. I bought 6 packs of free range organic chicken breasts (2) for 50 p each! Dated today but straight in the freezer.

So we may be secret preppers then 😀

QueenPaws · 03/12/2020 22:38

@goldenharvest yeah exactly! So if you were ever having to isolate or couldn't get out for food, you would be fine
Some people prep for specific things so thinking what you would need in a power cut. I always have bottled water after our water was unsafe to drink for weeks

BlackeyedSusan · 03/12/2020 23:46

omg.

Ive seen this before, I am not a preppar but we have: insert insane number of freezers. whereas some of the so called preppers have one stacker box of stuff in their flat in addition to what they can get in a tiny kitchen. Grin

disclaimer: I have freezer jealousy.

the Christmas pudding will be ok. I have eaten christmas pudding a lolot longer out of date than that. Blush

OP posts:
goldenharvest · 04/12/2020 11:06

Freezers are covered by the home insurance, but yes we could stay alive for a very long time! I even have dried milk and long life milk.

I’ll arm twist to eat the Christmas pudding this year 😂

(Maybe consider an emergency generator?).

sexesam · 05/12/2020 06:41

Slightly off topic but I can confirm that out of date cream of veg soup is fine to eat. (Aug 20) Although that helps nobody as you can't get cream of veg soup anywhere anymore. (so I have been saving my last few tins for when I REALLY want it)

BlackeyedSusan · 05/12/2020 12:16

Oh no. That's not good. This is one of the worries about Brexit, that favourite things are no longer available.

OP posts:
sexesam · 05/12/2020 12:58

Unfortunately this is not a brexit thing or a covid thing. They do vegetable soup but not cream of vegetable soup. It's a petty difference I know but one that has me savouring my last few tins. This isn't one company its all companies! All the supermarket own brands, and the named brands, none of them do Cream of veg any more, they stopped about 2 years ago. I would have stocked more if they had the decency to warn me!
I blame the health lot. Healthy veg, yummy tasty cream. No! This shall not be because people will think its healthy when it's not! No more! Plain veg only. 🙄 I didn't get fat eating cream of veg soup. But I miss it.
Rant over!

BlackeyedSusan · 05/12/2020 13:39

If you have a tin left, check the ingredients. Can you see if you can tweak the veg soup to make it more creamy?

OP posts:
LadyofMisrule · 05/12/2020 14:16

Morrisons have done a creamy vegetable soup in the fresh section in the past. I'm not sure if they still stock it.

ReturntoSpamfritters · 05/12/2020 15:32

Knorr do a Crofters Thick Vegetable Soup in a packet, might be worth a try. It has milk protein in, so cream-ish. It looks like a cream of vegetable soup. Incidentally the date on that is 01/2022
Tomato based pasta sauces, all dates through 22 and even some 23 now.

Impatientwino · 08/12/2020 22:15

It's a cup a soup granted but Batchelors do a cream of vegetable.

BlackeyedSusan · 11/12/2020 15:12

@Redwrecker Pringles are a year.

I can look at the dates on biscuits when I get home. Got a lot of Morrisons' ones today.

Will also look at the rest of the shopping when I get chance.
