Solar storms

Not that we need another SHTF scenario right now Grin, but just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on solar storms? From what I’ve read it is not unlikely earth will be hit by solar storms, which will obviously (at best) cause severe blackouts. It would knock out our high-tech society. I watched Britain Blackout a long time ago (on YouTube, there is also an American version) and thought it was one of the most interesting things I’ve watched but can’t really say I’ve prepared for it.

I have an old saucepan lined with cardboard and sealed with metal tape under a pile of stuff in the garage. In it is a windup radio and torch and some batteries. Obviously the radio working depends on there being working broadcasts. And the radio not dying from lack of use. That's my "faraday cage". I'm more inclined to have off grid alternatives to light, heat, cooking etc.

I have an old microwave (although I have some doubts) which I’m hoping works as a faraday cage in the depths of my cellar which has a wind up radio and few others bits.

I have a few packets of cigarettes and small bottles of spirits for bartering.

I also keep the petrol of my vintage campervan topped up as modern cars are unlikely to work.

I have a few methods for cooking without electricity but we wouldn’t fair well in that circumstance for well. We had plans to reopen our chimneys this year but that’s obviously on hold for sometime now.

The series Cobra on sky is about a solar storm black out in the U.K. if one we’re to happen it would be catastrophic and could last weeks.

Ok, I am going to be fucked...

GoodDogBellaBoo · 07/05/2020 17:56

@Toomuchspinach I haven’t watched it yet, is it any good?

I watched it. It was patchy but I love Robert Carlyle so I wasn't that bothered. Also when originally broadcast there was some sort of mix up with episode order. Continuity's a bit all over the place.
But it has Robert Carlyle in it. Did I mention that?

GoodDogBellaBoo · 16/05/2020 15:41

I watched it yesterday, wasn’t too bad actually.

Why the batteries in a faraday cage too? If the batteries are not connected to anything, what would a geomagnetic storm do to them?

I’ve a wind up radio, torches and batteries, tea lights/candles and matches in bulk. But none of it kept in a faraday cage, they’re kept switched off/batteries out.

I think there’d probably be a warning?

According to Forbes, we’re in a solar minimum from 2020 until 2025 with very little solar activity.
