Potassium iodide

Hope i am safe here to voice my irrational worries. I am a neurotic prepper who finds ‘being ready for anything’ actually calming. There have been a few scenarios on my list that I haven’t prepped for since i felt they were a bit too far fetched, but this Coronavirus pandemic has taught me anything is possible.

So i am thinking about nuclear reactor failure. We live 20miles downwind, my research shows that governments will advise giving children stable iodine, Potassium iodide, within 24hr of exposure. The governments failure to provide PPE has shown me that this govt wont have ready supplies of iodine.

Does anybody know a way of buying potassium iodide from a reliable source. I don’t want to buy from eBay as i may be buying fake and i really need it to be the real thing.

I also would not give it to my children unless the threat is real as i am aware of serious reactions to the chemical in some children.

The people living within 1km of reactors have already been issued these tablets but there are some calls to issue to people living 30km as we have ageing reactors in the U.K.

Thank you

Eek! No real idea tbh but could you look to see who supplies universities, hospitals etc and then work backwards? Someone like ChemEurope maybe?

You can buy Logols on Amazon. It’s not very expensive and I can’t see any reason anyone would go to the trouble of making a fake version!
Do research doses throughly it builds up in the body and although small amounts are beneficial (research suggests it can help prevent breast cancer) it is also Toxic. Use with great caution

Thank you it’s the 65mg or 130mg tablets that I want , ones that are specifically made for the purpose of protection from radiation , my kids would need 65mg per 24hour exposure

What’s the difference? How will your thyroid know?! Grin

I bought some off Amazon believe it or not ages ago. And then told myself off for catastrophising.
But then I only got three N95 masks a couple of years ago - ostensibly for a family Christmas time trip to London in case we had problems on the Tube - because I thought that was catastrophising too.

Well I just ordered some off eBay . Says fda approved but I will check the packaging when I get it . Now my catastrophising has got me searching eBay for Geiger Meters! Thankfully my budget won’t allow it 😆 but sometimes I feel the urge to prep is never ending . The list goes on and on ! I will be looking at my zombie holocaust risk assessment next!

I am glad now for the ppe I bought during swine flu years . I also have offered my nurse friend to have them if her supplies run low at work

I live in Germany and 2 years ago there was a Belgian reactor about to blow which terrified everyone as it was 50km from Aachen/Aix la Chapelles . I ordered some tablets for emergencies, online from a normal German pharmacy like Doc Morris. Dont know whether you can buy them in the UK? Since pharmacies are less stringently controlled since the 1950s floodgates Boots’ case, surely you can get them online?
Mine have probably gone off, should stock up on more. We have had enough rain in the Autumn but now it is realy dry, Nd nuclear PPs can’t maintain safe temperatures without sufficient water levels for cooling. Shock won’t get to that though. We would use every last drop in every reservoir to make sure the NPPs had enough water for thermal safety.

Crikey that’s scary , they must have several plan Bs for when water is scarce , we’ll I would hope , but sometimes I am astounded at the the lack of foresight humans can have. I think I will be a health and safety officer in my next life ! I couldn’t find any Uk online sales of it but if the ones I ordered from eBay look dodgy then I will continue my search and maybe ask in a chemist
