Living near nuclear power station

So we have just moved to a town very near a nuclear power station. Dh has suggested putting together a bag in case we need to leave quickly and I can see there are some great suggestions in many of the threads here but I was just wondering if there is anything specific I should put in for a nuclear related emergency? Is the general gist just get the hell out of there as quickly as possible if there is some kind of leak/ incident? I don’t even know how we would find out, presumably the police issue alerts?

Consider potassium iodide tablets (please check I have the right name Grin) including dosage levels for kids. Go bag is a good idea and paper maps.
Very unlikely to be a problem. But no harm in having a contingency.

Thanks for this @bellinisurge. Just had a look at what those tablets are, very interesting, how do you know this stuff?! Think I will focus on the bag first and go from there, as you say it’s very unlikely but these things can happen.

The power station might have an alert system you can sign up to, we used to live very close to Sellafied and they had a system you signed up to be contacted by various methods.

Thank you, I will check it out!

Where are you located? I used to live near one and we had leaflets about a plan through doors.

They will have an offsite emergency plan in place which means if there is a leak or whatever, they will distribute Potassium Iodate tablets if required.

I have lived near somewhere similar & they used to shove a leaflet about it through the door every few years plus my local council had an info page on their website.

I'd check there or at the website for the power station near you.
