What about the dc who go off to uni in the next couple of weeks?

I would make sure they have skills to cook and find their way home. A cheapo mini addressbook with numbers and addresses in it. A phone charger.
I would probably give them an extra box of boring shelf stable food that they can dip into. I would pay for a flu jab for them and make sure they have some cold remedy type stuff.
A dose of common sense not to let other people know they have this stuff.

"Find their way home" - if it all goes to hell in a handcart, I'm not sure that will be possible from the other side of the country.

Just simple stuff like train routes. How to use a public telephone.

Mine used to arrive with an empty rucksack and leave with a full one.
Likewise, around Hallowe’en, I’d send them a comfort parcel of treats, just to get them through til Christmas in a cheerful frame of mind.

A cheap mobile phone, one that can just take calls and texts. Might be easier to use in a crisis. Some cash that is definitely only for emergency travel/escape. First aid kit and water purifying tablets. Basically small things that can be stored away but easy to grab in an emergency.

A printed map showing main points/cities between you and them?
