Spam? Really?

I've been having a look at Jack Monroe's Brexit preps list and it's pretty useful.

However, does anyone actually eat Spam? I know it's not obligatory but I'm curious to know if any more seasoned preppers would consider stocking things like Spam and, if so, what do you do with it?

I’d put it in the bin.

abbsisspartacus · 08/01/2019 18:32

It's just cheap sandwich filler emergency cat pill helpers chop it up and put it on pasta

FayFortune · 08/01/2019 18:35

I'm not a prepper but I like a well stocked tin cupboard just in case!

No to Spam from me. We do keep a few tins of corned beef as the kids do like it. I prefer tinned fish.

Seniorschoolmum · 08/01/2019 18:46

Quite apart from anything else, the UK has quite a lot of pigs.

Surely the idea is to stockpile stuff we can’t produce cheaply in volume - tinned tomatoes, pasta, rice, tinned beans, tinned fruit, No deal might result in UK product having difficulty getting into Europe as well as the other way round, so Uk producers will, I imagine, sell as they can at home in the short term.

The UK exports a lot of fish, beef & lamb so we may have more of those things.

costacoffeecup · 08/01/2019 18:53

We have spam in our stockpile. I have no idea why as I've not eaten it in about twenty years, but I love it!

UnnecessaryFennel · 08/01/2019 19:19

Yes I'm thinking if I get anything in the way of tinned meat it will be corned beef. Spam just seems like a bit of a comedy ingredient Grin

I hate spam. I'm old and have actually had it served to me as a kid. It's horrible.

Snugglepumpkin · 08/01/2019 20:56

I have been prepping for a long time & have never ever had a can of Spam in the house except those wittily bought by 'friends' when they realised I am a prepper.
They got sent to the food bank because I don't like it.
Don't stock food you won't eat unless you are desperate, you'd just hate yourself for not buying something you actually don't mind when you had the chance. (not that I think it will get that bad)

That said, if I really thought a can of Spam was all that stood between my family & hunger, we'd eat it soon enough.

ShakeYourTailFeathers · 08/01/2019 20:57

I'd rather let the zombies get me...

ElyElyOy · 08/01/2019 21:32

Where I live (average-income area of the UK) people eat Spam - I don’t because I don’t really like it and if I do eat meat I’m more of a corned beef girl: but friends, family, people in the supermarket I see buying it all eat it. I think sometimes reading these threads that everyone lives in affluent areas of Kensington or something where marrowfat peas are a thing of myth and legend Wink

bellinisurge · 08/01/2019 21:56

@ElyElyOy - nope, spam hating northern suburb here. My dh loves marrowfat peas. He's on his own. Isn't there some yarn about Peter Mandleson thinking that was avocado dip!

Primarystress · 08/01/2019 23:38

Comedy ingredient Grin

I really like Spam and have a few tins just in case. We eat it anyway from time to time as a treat. Cut into slices and fried, it's as nice as bacon (maybe nicer) and it's also fine to cut into cubes and fry before adding to a pasta sauce. It's not at all nice just cold in slices so don't do that!

arranbubonicplague · 09/01/2019 00:08

When my DM deviated from vegetarianism for the benefit of visitors she did an amazingly savoury baked spam with vinegar, a smidge of mustard, and demerara sugar. I always think of it when I see people raving about doing their own ham at Christmas.

AwdBovril · 09/01/2019 00:10

DH likes Spam fritters, so I'll probably get some. Guess I better get some powdered egg. Or yorkshire pudding mix. That would work for the batter, right?

Epanoui · 09/01/2019 00:12

You don't need batter. It's really good just fried until browned on its own! If you like bacon, you will probably like fried spam.

UnnecessaryFennel · 09/01/2019 06:59

I do love bacon...

Arran 'Nigella's Spam in Coca-Cola' doesn't have quite the same ring does it? Grin

There's a Top Gear polar challenge in which Jeremy Clarkson takes a shotgun to a tin of spam. Pretty much my feelings. That said, I probably like all kinds of odd 70s stuff that other people hateGrin

TheVanguardSix · 09/01/2019 07:14

I'd rather chew my arm off than eat Spam.

Don't get me wrong, I'm stockpiling a bit, but we're not prepping for nuclear winter here (this is where Spam might, in a push, come in handy).

AlphaJuno · 09/01/2019 10:25

It has never appealed to me. I'm not really a fan of pork products in general. I'd rather have corned beef tbh. That's also useful for making a corned beef hash, with instant mash if needs be.
