Things you consider essential but the government won't

I'm putting together more of a long term prep for those things my family considers essential but the government will consider low priority if imports had to be prioritised. In essence, anything beyond basic food and medicine. For my family, I'm looking at

  • dog food (wet and dry), spare toys, wormer, Frontline, adaptil, treats etc
  • food and bedding for the small furries
  • make up (I know...)
  • incontinence products for an elderly relative
  • a couple of favourite specific foods for morale

For these items I'm building up a 6 month + stash relative to my 3 month ish stash of basic foods.

What are other MNers stashing from this category?

  • Sun cream
  • Dehydration sachets
  • OTC pain relief
  • OTC treatment for things like thrush or cystitis
  • Basic first aid kit
  • Household cleaners - washing liquid/dishwasher tabs + salts, bleach, vinegar,
  • Hot water bottle
  • A fan
  • Blankets (Ikea cheap fleece blankets are very useful for popping under sheets or tacking to backs of curtains in a very cold snap)
  • Basic sewing kit so you can mend clothes (needle and threads in useful colours - think about DC’s school uniform colours and things like basics black, white and grey. Patches for school trousers as those knees get put through. Pins, scissors and safety pins.)
  • Personal hygiene (shampoo, dry shampoo, cotton wool, your skincare of choice, toothpaste, deodorant)
  • Lightbulbs
  • Batteries - what takes those tiny or odd sized batteries in your house? Scales, watches, fire alarms?

Vegetarian & vegan food like sausage mix, plant milk, sweets etc.

Can manage without but would rather not!

Pet supplies - food, treats, flea treatment etc

Quality fresh meat and dairy products. Whilst I don't think the government will be making us vegan as such, I do think that we'll be spammed with, well, spam, other low grade tinned meat, beans, industrial cooking oil, sugar and flour. I'm going to stock up the freezer with meat, buy tins of tuna/salmon/mackerel and make sauerkraut/pickles with the cheap winter veg around at the mo.
