American comedian Bill Burr did a piece on how he came to get a gun.
He got into prepping some time ago after turning paranoid by sitting online for hours on end while on your.
After stocking up on loads of essential supplies he suddenly realised that unless you are prepared to defend it, you are simply collecting supplies for the biggest guy in the area.
So....do you have any plans for home defence? I hadn't thought about it and like most people a gun is not an option but I do have a sporting crossbow and bolts and a long bow and plenty of arrows.
Have you thought about how you would defend your home?

Why contentious?
I'm not talking about turning into a trigger happy Tony Martin but he (Burr) has a point.
Surely it's as much a natural part of prepping as anything else if law and order breaks down.
I'm not too sure that tutting with a stern look will cut the mustard.

We have several guns and ammo as OH hunts, and we occasionally go shooting competitions so I know how to shoot although I've never hunted as it sounds mind-numbingly boring
Lots of hand weapons general such as butchers knifes, hunting knifes, axes, scythes etc
But loads of people round here hunt so I'd hope we would all go for the different solution of working together and bartering, before all getting trigger happy and threatening to hack bits off each other over a tin of beans.

There is a book called Preppers guide to home defence, haven't had chance to start reading it yet but a quick glance through when it arrived looks like it has some interesting ideas in it

Is it based on city living or a bit more general?

Think it's based on general steps to secure the home and make it easier to defend if necessary

Will have to start reading it and report back

It looked interesting enough for me to buy it so there must have been something in it that I thought would be useful I have just been having a break from reading after going through preppers blueprint in a couple of weeks followed by one second after which barely got put down until it was finished

Will get myself off MN for an hour or so and make a start on it

Oh I havent read either of those. Got my last exam on tuesday (horay!) and last assignement ready to go, think I will have to take a look on amazon. Although I have a sustainable living book sat on the shelf to look at so hould prob start with that.

Not sure about defence really. Its hard to think about it /talk about it sensibly for a city home without starting to plan some movie sequel to home alone. Maybe if it was life/death we'd become more fierce and up for hand-to-hand combat. In the meantime our vague plans are:

• be very discreet with our supplies. Hide in the house, mostly.
• if houses are starting to get looted, loot our own house and relocate upstairs / to the loft.
• run & hide to parent's rural home, they have guns, muscly men and big dogs!

I would have recommended a home defence gun but you can't do that with your laws, and it must be frustrating to ask for advice on home defence and have every American talk about using weapons you simply cannot use. You have to stick to what your own laws allow. So..

First, try and stick to the goal that the easiest way to win a fight is not to be in one. No one can even try to steal your stuff if they don't know about it.So don't announce on Facebook that you are preparing, because people will remember the well equipped prepper across the street posted that he had lots of supplies.

Everyday items you can use as weapons. There doesn't seem to be any law restricting you from having a weapon in your own property, so think about stuff like baseball bats. Definitely not ideal but if it's a choice between that or nothing, go for the bat. Wasp spray as well can definitely be a pain in the ass to anyone getting a faceful of it in the eye.

If you have like minded neighbhors try and team up with them if the worst happens. Ok it may be hard to figure out who is on board with the idea of prepping without revealing that you are but maybe point to a news article about a blackout or a food shortage abroad and casually say "I wonder how we'd cope with that" and just gauge their reaction.

I agree, the best defence is not to advertise your half a dozen tins of beans and ten litres of water.
