33 weeker one day in scbu? !

I know it is very positive, but I am concerned its too early? Baby born at 33 weeks, just over 5ib no breathing issues and feeding well from a bottle and temp fine. On the ward now anyone else had this at all?

My nephew was 34 weeks and a similar weight - he spent no time in SCBU but was in a 'Billy Bed' for a couple of days on the ward.

My triplets were born at 33+2 weeks and spent 3 weeks in total in special care. However, they were dinky so maintaining their own body temperature was a little problematic so needed to be in an incubator for a bit. Your little was a really good weight, and I presume you had steroids to help mature the lungs? If baby is doing well, no need for a bed in SCBU.

Ds was born at 32 weeks and 3 lb 9oz, was in scbu for 3 weeks then home. He's 12 now and is currently giving me lip about not being allowed up the park as it's pouring

5 lbs is a great weight. As soon as ds was 4 lbs we were just discharged.

Congratulations Plenty! It's a bit if a shock isn't it? But as a PP said 5lb is a really good weight, and 33 weeks is pretty good too. My DD arrived a day shy of 33 weeks, she was in special care for 6 weeks in the end. I won't lie to you, it was hard, especially when I was discharged and she was still in hospital, but she got there in the end and has had absolutely no long term effects: she's a tall willowy 9 yo now, one of the taller ones in her class. For us the time spent in the ward was due to the time it took to establish breast feeding - she was a wee sleepy head - but for you it may be very different and you could be home much sooner. Fingers crossed for you.

Agree with Valium, 5lb great weight. DS was just over 4lbs at 33+6. One week in SCBU, breathed with CPAP after 2 days. One week in transitional care where he and I were spoiled by the most fantastic nurses. In fact he had to stay one more night than necessary so we could pick up our ordered baby stuff from the 'pram shop'. He was 4.5 lbs when we came home.
He's almost 10 now and cooped up today as it's bucketing down here.

Thank you for your replies. She had steriods so that has made a huge difference. I'm surprised at the sucking reflex though as I thought that came later. I saw the doc today for the baby check and she said that as long as temp is fine and feeding is established there is no need for special care.
Very glad of the side room only witnessed one near fight so far between a dad and a midwife, the dad didn't want to use the toliets downstairs.

Sucking reflex is normally between 34-36 weeks, but can kick in beforehand. Congratulations too :D Some of her milestones may happen a little later, such as smiling will happen closer to 12 weeks rather than 5-6, but by the time she's around 16 months, you won't see much difference. :)

My ds was 7 lbs by what would've been his due date so he was never tiny apart from his first 8 weeks

My twins were born at 34 weeks and spent a week in SCBU and a week in transitional care. They were 5lb4 & 5lb7. Needed help keeping warm and feeding.

Firstly, congratulations !

My 35+6 DD 5lb 3oz spent 8 days in SCBU - due to difficulty regulating blood glucose & temperature, jaundice & feeding difficulties. The jaundice developed after a few days, everything else happened within hours after delivery. I had steroids. She came home on a hot cot to help with her temperature & is thriving.
