Ask the unit - our unit has special patterns as they need the hats to have a little flap on the top so they can scan the babies heads through the flap without taking the hat off (as we use the hats to secure the breathing tube with) - i'm sure our unit supplies a pattern and it would be a shame if you knitted loads of hats and then they couldn't use them. Also, I would advise you make the ties out of wool rather than use ribbon as, espcially if the baby is poorly and retains fluid and gets puffy, the ribbons can really dig into the skin wheras woollen ties have a bit more give and are softer.

it's a lovely idea and we are always grateful to the lovely people who knit stuff for us!

Agree with SallySparrow157, our nnu has patterns with the flap (Westminster bonnet??) which they happily post out to people. Otherwise there is a risk the nnu can't use the design you have spent ages kindly making
