Hello everyone,

I'm hoping someone can help as I'm worried about my little one.

He was born on 1 September - 6 weeks premature - so now just over 6 weeks old. He's been suffering reflux and was prescribed baby Gaviscon which didn't really work all that well, so the doctors added Ranitidine to the mix to reduce the acidity. That was 36 hours ago and was starting to work like a dream.

Until this evening...

After 4 doses of Ranitidine over a 36 hour period, he has suddenly developed diarrhoea. He's filled (literally filled) 4 nappies in 3 hours and is devouring 60-80mls of expressed breast milk every hour.

Is this a normal side effect of Ranitidine? Will this diarrhoea pass?? I am struggling to keep up with him by expressing (I can breastfeed but with his reflux it's been too painful for him to feed from me - the lying down causes the acid to come up).

Aside the constant pooing, he seems quite happy in himself, so I don't know if I'm worrying unnecessarily but this is highly unusual...

Thanks Mumsnetters...

x

Oh dear. I can't say that my DS eithr ever drank that much (still doesn't) or had that much poo and he was on ranitidine (still is 7 months later) Given he was prem, and is presumably only about at his due date now, I'd get him checked out.

Hope all is ok
