Reassurance following surgical abortion

I underwent surgical abortion 4 days ago.

Since the procedure my abdomen has been incredibly tender, which didn’t worry me too much given the nature of the op. However, this PM my abdomen has notably increased in size. It’s very firm and I now look around 6mo pregnant. My other half is shocked at the size of it too, I’m not seeing something that isn’t there.

I’m going to call the aftercare line in the AM but in the meantime I was hoping somebody who has had the procedure could tell me whether this is normal, or should I be worried? I keep wondering whether this is a sign of infection / damage. Although, I have no infection markers…

Is a huge belly normal following SA? Any past experiences would be much appreciated x

Hiya just wondered how your getting on now ? Have you been to the doctors or anything? I’ve never heard of getting a swollen and painful belly after . Obviously it does hurt abit after but not as you are describing x

Hi, and thank you so much for replying to my thread. It’s quite a lonely process and it’s nice to know somebody had a read..

I started with a mild fever after posting this. Managed to speak with a GP over the phone. After describing my symptoms he diagnosed me with a uterine infection following the surgery 😣. This was my biggest fear as I read up before hand that infection following surgical abortion can leave scar tissue / narrowed tubes and affect future fertility.

I’ve been prescribed antibiotics to take 5x per day. Have been taking them for 3 days and unfortunately the fever / pain / swelling isn’t shifting. Not feeling great mentally or physically but hopeful the antibiotics will help soon x

Sorry you are going through this. I have no experience with the surgical side of abortion but I did have an infection after birth and they said I should see improvement after 48 hours on the antibiotics. Have you called the helpline? Most places have a 24 hour care line you can call, sounds like you may need different antibiotics or maybe a scan to check everything has come away. Hope you get sorted soon! 🩷

Aww hopefully the antibiotics will start to work soon they can take a while . It’s the last thing you need after going through an abortion. Have you got anyone to help and support you ? I know it’s tough but you will get through it xx

I am really sorry to hear about your experience. Did you manage to recover?

I am booked for a surgical abortion. I have been asked to take a Mifepristone tablet 24 hours before the procedure to soften my cervix. Did you have to do this? If so, what was your experience? X

Hey, it took me around a month to fully heal.

I did take the tablet before hand, it induced some light bleeding and minor cramping. I’ve heard some people have no side effects. I hope your procedure goes well and I’m happy to answer any questions if you have them - I know this can be such a daunting time xx
