Medical abortion at 10 weeks during covid

Hi everyone!

I posted a few weeks ago about becoming pregnant, this is my first pregnancy and was completely unexpected. I’m currently still living at home with parents and have no job (I broke my leg in summer so have been rehabilitating but have an interview on the 25th of this month). I’ve decided the best thing to do is to go ahead with an abortion, I just wondered if anybody has had a medical abortion at 10/11 weeks during COVID? I have a telephone consultation with a nurse tomorrow morning and i’m praying that they will be able to post the medication out to me as the nearest hospital is a 40 minute bus journey and I just don’t feel comfortable going to a hospital with the pandemic/lockdown.

Any pointers on the type of pain/level of bleeding would be greatly appreciated 🥺

Sorry but you will most likely be given a time slot to go and collect it. Everyone is different but I had severe period type pains and heavy bleeding so stock up on the codeine, pads and have the hot water bottle ready. I was also sick. It didn’t last long and it was a massive relief once it was done with. I hope it goes smoothly for you.

I will let you know how it goes, it’s definitely worth taking the medication sooner rather than later as from what I’ve read the further along you are, the more painful it is to get the medical one! Please keep me updated if you take it soon, how you’re feeling etc! It’s such a scary thing but I know we’ll feel better afterwards ❤️

@Seitanlove yeah i’m hoping I either have to pick it up or they post it without having to actually go into the clinic. Thank you for the advice! I have never had heavy periods etc so i’m hoping I can just dose up on paracetamol and ibuprofen when I take the second lot of tablets and hopefully I don’t get too much pain. I shall have the hot water bottle & snacks at the ready for it, just anxious to get it over with now I’ve decided!

You sound like me I have such light periods never had pain and only last 2-3 days . Have you contacted the clinic for your medication? I have taken the first tablet today after having them for a week I was so nervous I was 50/50 just because I didn't want the abortion pain and the unknown but I just got the tablet and threw it in my mouth and carried on I have had nothing iv been out all day no pain or bleeding just nervous of what's ahead as now I know there's no going back but I wish I did it a week ago but I'm glad I took time to really feel it was the right decision so I won't look back with regret. I'm over 8 weeks now I found out when I was a week late for my period so around 5 weeks but waited for my appointment and then was too nervous if u feel it's 100% right for you I would say just swallow the tablet as after I did I was fine and now I know I got to face what's to come I couldn't wait no more. How many weeks will you be when you do it? I'm going to do the second part tomorrow afternoon if I'm brave lol xx

EventsSwansea1 · 14/01/2021 14:18

Did you hear back from them @sophiebabyyy
I have just started the second stage feel relieved now but hoping I can manage it ..will keep u posted x

Hey! So I had a scan today at the hospital, and because I was 10+3 they wouldn’t let me have the tablets at home. I’m going back on Tuesday to take my first tablet then I’ll be spending the day at the hospital on Thursday until the pregnancy passes. I am dreading it i’m not going to lie 😭. I hope that your termination goes okay! How’re you feeling today now you’ve taken your other tablets? X

Hey babe I have taken them 2 hours in first hour I was tidying up had something to eat I'm watching Netflix now sitting up with a water bottle starting to get uncomfy but no pain or blood yet I think I'd rather be in hospital as if you need any pain relief or anything then everything is there I'm worrying after reading what if the pain gets so bad I need an ambulance as iv taken cocodomol ..will keep you posted xx

Sophiebabyyy · 14/01/2021 16:36

@EventsSwansea1 I think you will be absolutely fine, keep dosed up on pain killers every 4 hours, cocodamol is absolutely fine as you can take paracetamol and codeine when going through an abortion, you could even take ibuprofen too hun. Keep us posted, take it easy and get some snacks and a good series to binge watch! ❤️

I went to the toilet and a clot come out, been sitting on the toilet with a water bottle on my belly for a hour about 7 clots have come out about cherry size no pain can feel bleeding in the toilet now and then I'm comfy sitting here atm don't want to get off the toilet incase the sac comes in my pad lol. So far no pain at all was dull ache with water bottle was ok, clot feel weird coming out but it's not painful and atleast something is working (sorry if too much info) I knew I had the tablets a week but was too stressed so I wish I knew someone's full experience x

Sophiebabyyy · 14/01/2021 19:02

@EventsSwansea1 definitely not too much info! I’m glad there’s no pain there for you atm, hopefully the sac passes soon if it hasn’t already babe! I’m dreading mine tbh, I’ll be 11+3 when I finally get it done next week, so have a feeling it’s gonna hurt x

Just an update on this thread in case anybody comes across it and is in the same position I was.
I went in to hospital to have a scan on the 14th Jan and was told I was 10+3 so couldn’t have the abortion at home. I returned to hospital again on the 19th to get the first tablet and had to spend the day in hospital on the 21st.
The first pill I had on the 21st was inserted vaginally at 8:30am and then they gave me 2 oral tablets every 3 hours after that. I was advised most women passed the foetus by about 4pm but unfortunately this wasn’t the case for me - I stopped bleeding about midday and basically didn’t bleed for the rest of the day then. I started having contraction type pains about 8pm at night (still in hospital) and they carried on until about 11:30pm when I felt slight pressure behind my pubic bone and just thought I needed a wee. As I was sat on the toilet the sac passed in one go and basically felt like I had laid an egg - it was definitely a weird feeling but wasn’t painful coming out. The sac looked to be about the size of a lemon, but the pain all stopped after that.
I had one big clot and slight bleeding the next time I went to the toilet & ive been very very lightly bleeding since - I’m only having to change my pad every 6-8 hours really and they’re the thin pads. Very much like a normal period for me now.
All in all to say I was 11+3 by the time I had the abortion the day was relatively painless, I was sick after my third dose of the tablets but had to wait 3 more hours to get some more. The worst pain was at about 11am which I then got painkillers for, and then again when the contractions started at about 8pm - painkillers barely masked this pain and all I could do was curl up and just breathe through them when they came on.

The worst part for me was the waiting, not knowing when it was going to pass. There was one girl who was in having the same procedure as me who was 12 weeks and she had passed hers by about 1pm whereas mine took a lot longer. Remember everybody is different, she bled through 3 sets of pants whereas I barely bled at all throughout the entire day. I used 2 maxi pads all day up to the point where I passed the foetus (which took 15 hours in total).

I definitely wouldn’t want to go through it again, but I know for sure I made the right decision Smile

Sorry I meant to say I used 4 maxi pads all day not 2 lol.

Hi babe just checked this hope everything is ok now I'm 3 weeks and 3 days since and I went to the clinic last week and my test was positive although she scanned my stomach and says there's blood there but could be from my next period although I wasnt and still am not bleeding since, I did some light exercise today and my stomach still feels bruised to touch when exercising I was in a bit of pain which made me check mum'snet I'm so worried they told me in the clinic to do a blood test but almost fainted so they told me to do the preg test in a week which is tomorrow. Really feeling worried if I need a d&c as I'm back in work.. 😬 have you done your test x

Rainb23 · 03/03/2021 13:53

Hey Sophie, just wanted to check up on how you are doing? I had a similar situation to you but I kept bleeding for three months afterwards. Have you stopped bleeding yet ? Did they give you antibiotics ?
Hope all’s well,
R

I'm taking my tablets this weekend. I will be 9weeks 1 day. I'm petrified. How much will this hurt? Is the pain unbearable snd how long did it take to pass? Please help

Mumto3ggb · 06/01/2022 14:09

@Cms1987 I went through this nearly 5 weeks ago although I was only 6/7 weeks but like you I was absolutely terrified and kept thinking the worst but honestly it’s not as bad as you think it is yeah it’s not nice but it’s manageable I took my tablets and within an hour and half I was just sat on the toilet until I everything past I took mine at half 3 and come 10 I was over the worst and went to bed and was just like a period after. You’ll be fine have pain killers and a hot water bottle honestly the hot water bottle helps so much x

Lightbulbs9 · 13/01/2024 01:16
