Hi,

Just wondering out of interest how much weight people had gained at 20w? I have put on about 12 pounds and just wanted an idea of whether that seemed average or not (was normal BMI before)?

Thanks!

DomesticG0ddess - that's reassuring! Most people I know seem to have only put on about 2 stone so I felt like the odd one out - and quite a few people on here when I was pregnant seemed to have put on less than me - we're all different though I suppose. I hasten to add that I did not restrict myself in any way eating-wise - I ate what I wanted when wanted - most of my snacks were pretty unhealthy actually - like crisps and chocolate but I eat like that now and always have done...

Interesting, planner26.

I had a BMI of 21 before I fell pregnant with DS and I gained a lot of weight very quickly. I remember being 10lbs heavier than pre-pregnancy at my 18 week midwife appointment, so I was probably on the same lines as you. I ended up gaining about 3.5 stone overall.

5 years (and another baby later), I've kept an extra half a stone on and I actually look alright for it. Although I miss being truly slim, I think I was scrawny around the chest and the extra bit of weight looks better. It looks less better on my knees, sadly.

Can I ask: have you always been very careful with your weight? It was only when I fell pregnant that I realised I'd been dieting since I was 12 (so nearly 20 years) and I really enjoyed eating what I wanted, for a change. Regretted it a bit in the third trimester (when I had carpal tunnel syndrome and oedemic legs), but - och - why the hell not.

Healthy and happy pregnancy to you! x

I'm nearly 18 weeks and today in the gym I checked - I've put on 4lbs. I was slender before - and luckily I only had a short bout of morning sickness so I've managed to eat healthily and keep exercise up. That said I've gone up 3 bra sizes, and my bump is definitely growing!

mamma4 · 08/07/2010 23:48

I thought I was doing really well until i read this . Im 31 weeks with twins and have gained 18lb so far. I have been the same weight since 24 wks though so maybe ill pile more on in the next few week, hope not!

Druzhok · 09/07/2010 00:03

mamma4 - goodness me, you're doing very well and with twins you have room to gain a whole lot more!

When I 'admit' to gaining 3.5 stone, I usually forget to say that I gave birth at 35 weeks ... so that's a shorter pregnancy AND a far smaller baby than normal

Most of your weight will be taken up by the small people within, surely? Their combined weight is probably similar to that of an avergae newborn by now ... ?

mamma4 · 09/07/2010 00:12

The babies are weighing fine for my weeks although every1 comments how tiny my bump is for twins when it looks huge to me! Def knw that my backside has increased though! I already have two boys and they both weighed 8.14 and i gained lots of weight with them and really expected to be alot heavier with twins

Druzhok · 09/07/2010 00:22

Sounds like a cracking excuse to eat a whole lot more, to me!

Wallace · 09/07/2010 06:54

At 20 weeks I weigh 5lb less than I did before I was pregnant. I was't overweight before but just felt so dreadful for first 4months that I couldn't eat. According to that calculator "You are 13.2 pounds under the lower end of of your target weight range".

I'm not worrid because just had scan and the baby is fine and a good size

Ps am eating like a pig now!

planner26 · 09/07/2010 09:39

Druzhok - yes I have always watched my weight and to be honest I couldn't have carried on eating what a did pre-pregnancy and kept upright I think! (Not that I starved myself or anything but I didn't eat a lot at all compared to what food I'm craving now!). Also had the scrawny chest/collar bone area problem before and looking a bit better now (the bum and hips area not faring too well though!).

I also used to run a few times and week and do weights, now just gentle swimming a few times a week so not the hard cardio like I'm used to - think that accounts for some of the weight changes.

I actually didn't think 10 pounds was too bad! I don't know how people lose weight or just put a few pounds on by this stage (jealous!) - I have a right bump already!

Ok, got on the scale this morning and have put on about 5.5 kilos, which is 12 pounds and I am 22 weeks. That seems like a lot but I think for my BMI I can put on up to 16 kilos which is 35.5 pounds. I think most of mine has come from boobs (up from C cup to E cup) and bump. I haven't put weight on anywhere else.

I have decided not to worry about it anymore as long as I am still eating well and exercising.

I can't believe someone posted that an overseas doctor said you could only put on 8 kilos the entire pregnancy. What a load of total bollocks. The baby almost weighs that much! (well maybe not, but still). I bet it was in France.

Wallace · 09/07/2010 11:21

Meant to say still don't have much of a bump despite this being my fourth!

DomesticG0ddess · 09/07/2010 11:30

I am just not bothered now how much I put on. I have 3 months to go and I always eat well - my body will do what it needs to do to produce a healthy baby. Also, I know I will never do this again (unless I have an "accident"!). Hey planner, I made choc brownies too last week, they were so good!

I used to be a personal trainer (still do it sometimes), and I really like exercise and being healthy, so once those first few months are over, I will be happy to exercise to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight. I started off this pregnancy exactly the same weight as first time round, 4 years ago!

As long as everyone is eating healthily, what's a few treats and a few extra pounds between friends?!

vmcd28 · 09/07/2010 12:55

Agreed. I was just coming on here to say it was a little worrying the way this thread was becoming a bit obsessive about weight gain. Everyone puts on weight differently, both in pregnancy and not in pregnancy. We have to accept that the baby/placenta etc will add a certain amount, we'll store fat to prepare for feeding, and any other weight is based on what we eat and if we exercise.
I am eating like a fat pig so it's my fault when I start piling on weight!

aichi · 11/07/2010 20:21

emmyloo2 - not sure what other country's doctor suggested you should only put 8kg in total, but Japanese doctors also advise pregnant women should only put on 8kg in total. They are really strict and even tell you off if you go beyond that!!

As a result of this someone I know only put on 6kg in total!! So shocking to hear - she was really skinny person pre pregnancy too...

I think its really dangerous to control your weight too much during the pregnancy.
Like everyone said, as long as you're eating healthily then it should be fine!

first1 · 12/07/2010 20:30

My baby is nearly 7 weeks old and weighed 8lb 3oz. I was a small size 8 pre pregnancy, shockingly put on 3 stone, and already lost 2.5stone of it. We're all different

Valbonne09 · 13/07/2010 15:56

Started off a normal size 12, 5'6 65kg then got pregnant and I put on 10 kgs by week 8 despite vomiting all day every day from week 6 until....well hasn't quite stopped and I'm week 20. So, thinking this must be water retention and apparently my mum was exactly the same. Since then I've only put on another 2kgs which my doctor is very happy with. Apparently there are some of us who balloon massively in the first 3 months then don't put on too much more later on. Despite this the bump is fairly neat but pronounced, I don't have huge boobs (sadly as was hoping for that bit!) and I'm starting to have a more normal diet as sickness subsides to 2-3 times a week rather than 5-6 times a day. Weight gain was a massive shock at 8 weeks scan but now feeling bit more relaxed as I know I have zero control over it all and just can't to have a happy, healthy baby at the end of it all!

duejuly2010 · 13/07/2010 16:23

BMI of 22 before preg. Put on 12lbs by 20 weeks, now 37 weeks and have gained 1 st and 12lbs

misdee · 13/07/2010 16:24

2lb's usually.

BeedeBee · 13/09/2010 15:32

BMI of 22 pre-pregnancy. 17 weeks today and have put on about 8lbs

Mahraih · 13/09/2010 16:40

I had a BMI of 18 before pregnancy, and put on 90% of my total weight gain in the first 12 weeks. Think I needed to.

I've now put on 16 lbs, all in the boobs and bum. It's a bit distressing, but still well within healthy BMI and the weight loss has slowed down dramatically.

I didn't have much morning sickness and am lucky that my only craving is hot chocolate (which I drink low fat) so am able to control my diet. I eat good portions, but healthy foods, lots of fruit/veg and basic protein, carbs and dairy.

beckie90 · 13/09/2010 18:20

in my 1st pregnancy by 20 weeks i had put on around a stone, but at the end of it i had put on nearly 4 stone, my bmi before was below 18. lost 3 stone straight away and ended up a healthy 8 stone 12 and remained that.
up untill now im currently 9 weeks pregnant with my 2nd and instead of gaining a little bit of weight i have gone the other way and now weigh 7 stone 12, i hope by 20 weeks im back to normal

Piranha1981 · 14/09/2010 21:42

I'm 20 weeks and have put on 10lbs but almost entirely in the first trimester! I haven't really put much on since week 13, which seemed a bit back-to-front to me. My BMI was normal to begin with, though at the lower end of the scale (20).

I was worried as it seemed to be the opposite of what is supposed to happen, even though I've generally been eating healthily throughout, sensible portions, doing moderate exercise etc. We called the midwife and she said not to worry though, and that everyone is different.

Would still quite like to gain again (will probably regret saying that won't I!) as even though rationally I know that a lot of the weight gain isn't actually baby, it would make me feel reassured. Until I find the next thing to worry about....!
