i've just been reading a thread about listeria and was to hear that pre-packed sandwiches are bad (think with the first pg i read that they were ok).
when i'm at college that's all my lunches consist of. we don't have a fridge to keep our food in so i'm not happy about bringing my own sandwiches to sit around for hours especially with the crazy heating that goes on there. there is a microwave for our use but oh yeah i'm not supposed to be using one of them whilst pregnant! and ready meals suck anyway. oh and they're supposed to be kept cold...

please help. what can i eat? dry weetabix is it?

eh? what? no microwave? I think you're overthinking this a bit. Just take a normal sandwich (perhaps with a frozen yoghurt or cool pack if you're really worried) whch you have made so you know it's fresh and safe.

Listeria isn't on everything, it's fairly rare to catch as long as you practise good kitchen hygiene and don't eat old food. Try not to worry about it too much.

Yes oobs, you are overthinking this way too much! Listeria is extrememly, extremely rare -- it affects anywhere between 1-7 people per million (and these are usually people with underlying conditions). You probably have a higher chance of being hit by a car than of catching it.

Of course you can scare yourself silly reading things on the internet. Pre-packaged sandwhiches are absolutely fine. Just check the sell-by dates and enjoy.

Oh and never heard of not using microwaves when pregnant either.....

oobs · 13/12/2009 10:46

ah yes frozen things thanks james! and yeah i'm sure i read that about the microwave. still use it but run across to the other side of the room after hitting the start button lol. how i haven't managed to kill myself on the toys yet i don't know!

I really wouldn't worry too much tbh. And there's no need for dry cereal in work, you could always buy a small carton of long life. Or as it's cold, you could take a flask of hot soup, stew or pasta in sauce.

lol I dont know how I have made it to 34 weeks then! Ive stodd by microwaves while my food is buzzing away, eaten plenty of prawn sarnies from petrol stations along with lots of other bits.

Stay stress free Ooobs and try not to panic, you have the rest of your pregnancy and dont want to stress for that long

Congrats by the way

Agree with other posters. I would eat pre packaged sandwiches from place where I think they are/look fresh eg: Pret. Would be wary of food that looks tired and like its been sitting aorund for ages.

Other tip: hard boiled eggs. Comes in its own packaging - bonus!

Gees Ooobs... Take a chill pill! Pregnancy is 9 months long, and if you carry on at this level about everything you'll be a basket case. Use your common sense, don't spend all day gorging youself on dodgy shellfish, pate and stinky cheese but otherwise eat what you like and what you feel will nourish you and your bean best. And provided you don't get INTO the microwave I don't think you should worry too much about that either...

But FFS stop googling all the things which could potentially be hazardous and enjoy life and your pregnancy...

And I thought I was a worrier...
