Things I have learnt since becoming pregnant

Probably been done before but I thought I would start a nice light hearted thread for everyone feeling tired and fat and miserable!

1. there is nothing 'romantic' or 'ladylike' about morning sickness. I did not throw up delicately into a little china bowl a la 18th centuary princess. Morning sickness is exactly like regular nausea/vommiting except it goes on for 3 months.

2. that I could actually reach a point where I would choose to go round town on a Saturday afternoon wearing a pair slacks I bought for £3 in Asda that make me look about 4stone heavier than I actually am because that seemed like less hassle than walking upstairs and getting changed

3. that i would get excited about different brands of alcohol free beer

4. that a picture of a dog in a magazine would make me cry. Hysterically and for about 20 mins.

5. that despite having a good degree and a successful career, I would suddenly fail to be able to complete the puzzles in 'take a break' on a regular basis.

6. that newborn baby clothes are not tiny and gorgeous but, in fact, huge and terrifing

7. that I would need to develop degree level understanding of mechanics and child development psychology in order to choose a pushchair.

That not all pregnancies end in miscarriage....look at me now, 9 weeks with no symptoms even though i check my underwear for bleeding 200 times a day, there is none!

How amazing, no UTTERLY bewildering and amazing it is to have a baby growing inside me, safe a snug.

How much one fucking boob can kill,

How much i LOVE tracky bottoms, and my sofa, and afternoon siestas!!

That I cannot slouch on sofa in my usual comfy position of one leg tucked under, as said leg goes to sleep after about 5 seconds and makes me fall on the floor when the phone rings.

That I am actually quite a pale person when all the sunbed/fake tan/make up is removed (can't be arsed these days)

That I don't miss wearing high heels one bit, and in fact may stop altogether.

That I can power through a tin of Quality Street in approx 2 days.

Great idea!!

1. That the first trimester tiredness is unlike any other tiredness ever experienced!

2. That the first trimester nerves combined with secrecy of the first 12 weeks makes you really want to go into hibernation until your 12 week scan! And the nerves dont get any easier with subsequent pregnancies!

3. That the people who only really understand what you are going through when pregnant are those who have either been pregnant themselves, or seen their wives go through it first hand. If your best friend hasnt been pregnant, she really doesnt get it!

4. That you can be uber fit before falling pregnant, but eventually, you wont be able to walk that far and you will succumb to the waddle!

5. The more your pregnancy progresses, comfort takes priority over fashion

1. that i would actually miss that hormonal feeling around the time of my period because its nothing compared to the emotional rollercoaster of being pregnant where anything and everything can set me off!

2. that i would actually really want it to be over cos not every women just loves being pregnant

3. that i actually have to wake up to turn over at night

4. That i cant just go out anywhere without seriously considering how i could get to a toilet quickly!

5. that you really do get baby brain and just actually struggle to remeber anything

6. that i would go out looking like rubbish but think its ok cos im pregnant so i have an excuse!

i have learned that being pregnant does not automatically guarantee a seat on the train

since being pregnant all i see is pregnant women and mothers everywhere.....so im not the only one?

my poor bump will be hit by doors and drawers as i forget how i am a little too often

That the absence of brie and stilton on crackers has such a big impact on my life.

Or that I, previously the most un-maternal woman in the world, could go gooey over a little pair of socks. Pathetic.

That the words from the midwife yep the head is engaged mean you WILL be suffering pain from now until you give birth...... no one told me this before i got pregnant

That DH has a very cruel streak when it comes to eating blue cheese, soft cheese rare steak etc.

That I can feel nauseous and starving at the same time.

That I can completely forget things like my pin number which I've used no problem for 2 years and my phone number.

That I can cry at anything remotely sad or happy without warning.

that the first 8 weeks are overshadowed by fear that something will go wrong at any minute

that I can fall asleep in the afternoon while in work

That Christmas does not cater for those who cant eat smelly cheese, shellfish or drink any of those yummy xmas tipples. (becks booze free beer is my fav)

That watching delia smith talking about christmas would make me cry- disgusting!

People looking at me obv. thinking hmm the goose is getting fat... i am pg you moron!

That hunger can be switched off to sickness very quickly and vice versa.

That there is a good reason why my man will never be pg.

Tiredness- I am technically awake past my usual bedtime.

Somedays I will feel right as rain and some I feel hurrendous.

That some M&S yummy sandwiches contain things which the nhs consider dangerous for pg women- well go on then spoil my last pleasures!

Found this out in my last pregnancy and it has now been confirmed by the latest pregnancy:

I lose the ability to parallel park when pregnant! What the flipping heck is that about? I live in London. I can park in a spot that is only inches bigger than my car usually.

Anyone know why I now need a space at least twice the size of my Clio?

That my pregnancy hormones give me a feeling of "doom" that lasts throughout the whole 40 weeks. Nothing specific, just general "doom".

That, like Irishfairy, I can feel so sick I am 2 seconds away from barfing but the only way to stop it is to eat my own body weight in carbs.

That I can go up 2 dress sizes in the first 16 weeks.

That I will want to kill the next person who says "gosh, you're looking so big already, what are you going to be like at the end?"

That putting up Christmas decorations can give me an excrutiatingly painful back

That I have mad pregnancy thoughts, of running away and living in a commune, or going back to living with my parents (I'm 35 years old).

That everytime I go to the loo my arms are too short to reach around my bump to do the business with the loo paper (tmi? sorry)...

That in order to turn over in bed I would have to get all the way out and then back in again!

That I wouldn't be able to go anywhere where there isn't a toilet!

That my thighs would get bigger despite not putting much weight on......surely the baby's not THAT low down!?

That I would be so pissed off at having to get through christmas without alcohol and cheese......I want brie on crackers washed down with a large baileys!!

That climbing Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro in the space of 2 weeks was actually easier than being pregnant.

that you get used to weeing in the grass by the side of the road behind the car door!

That my sense of smell would become so acute that I could have got a job at the airport, working with the sniffer dogs.

That I would absolutely hate wandering around Mothercare - feeling intimidated by the vast array of stuff I probably don't even need.

That I could actually fall asleep in literally 4 seconds of my head hitting the pillow.

That stairs would become the equivalent of a small mountain range.

That SPD would be so bloody awful.

That the baby's kicks wouldn't freak me out - infact I really love them.

that for the only 9 months in my life where its ok to eat a lot, i would find 99 per cent of food repulsive (with the edible 1 percent being devoid of all nutritional value)

that I could walk round the house burping and farting in front of DP and DS and NOTGIVEASHIT...

that i could burp so vigorously and rythmically that, with some backing vocals from Paul Mcartney's Frog Chorus, i could probably do well on Britain's got Talent...except that i have to go to bed at 7

that the packets of Always Ultra in my knicker drawer would not do for next year but would take on a whole new feminine hygene role

and yes, chegirl , that i could drive twice round the block whilst really needing a wee to a find a space that didn't involve parallel parking

.whoops that i shouldn't have been eating brie- garnered from this thread- oh well 9 days to go- sure it will be fine. i bet the french don't give it up!

1. That losing weight actually worries me now - I would've been over the moon if I wasn't pregnant

1. Unusal smells of any sort, make me sick!

1. The fact that I can go for a looonnnng wee, then be sick and pee again (at the same time as vomiting) sorry if tmi!!

1. I can eat a whole pack of choc digestives with one cup of tea

1. How much useless information people are able to give on the subject of pregnancy "Don't sit with your legs crossed, it can harm the baby!" "Don't drink fizzy drinks, it can harm the baby" I mean, when you can NEVER get comfy, or keep any food or fluid down, you'll sit and drink however and whatever you want!! (Or is that just me?!?!)

1. That morning sickness doesn't just happen in the morning

1. and it sometimes, doesn't go away after 3 months!!

1. Not everyone 'blooms' and feels fantastic during 2nd trimester!

1. That the words 'epidural' and 'c section' frighten the life out of me!

10. How wonderful and supportive my family actually are, even though they initially hit the roof at the news of my pregnancy!

That staying awake until the end of X Factor is pushing it.

That my moles seem to have doubled in size.

That dead legs and hip pain mean more than 3 hours sleep at a time is impossible.

That I wouldn't dream of having any alcohol at all, but the odd bit of rare meat nicked from DH's dinner is too much to resist.

That when I think about anything for next year (holidays, buying concert tickets etc) I temporarily forget I will have a small human to take care of by then.

Pootle- I don't want to scare you but please get your moles checked out. I had one that grew during pregnancy and it became melanoma. Luckily they got it all off but they said it was the hormones that triggered it.

I have found a whole new pregnancy style. I used to always wear quite skinny clothes as I had what you might call a "boy" frame. However with my enlarged boobs and growing bump I am quite liking the loose tops with the bat wings.

I am a size 12 and today bought a size 16 top in New Look for the party season- this is VERY unlike me.

I will probably take this change of style with me post-pregnancy

That I would look forward to having a booze free beer (I agree becks is best)

That I would stop being able to see/reach my bikini line and in fact not care that it probably looks like the amazon down there!

That I miss mouldy cheese so much

That running for a bus is like running a marathon

That acne doesnt just happen in your teens (and that pregnancy 'glow' means greasy spotty skin)

That I would be happy to leave the house in track suit bottoms when not on way to gym and that when shopping I would look at things thinking that looks comfy rather than that will look fab/fashionable etc

That actually I would like to try to have as natural a birth as possible (I thought i was a give me the drugs elective c-section type!)

That sleeping through the night is a luxury, as is the ability to bend to the floor!

That pregnancy induces wierd and often very rude dreams!

That cake seems like something that is necessary everyday

That when the midwife told me to do my pelvic floor exercises I should have done them, especially whilst suffering from horrendous morning sickness

That EVERYONE annoys me, how did I ever have a conversation with anyone before without screwing my face up at them!???

That I am attracted to EVERY man except DP!!

I am hoping these hormones go away post-poregnancy, they certainly weren't as bad first time round!

Oh and that your 18 month old PFB doesn't care that you are pregnant and wants fed/changed/to play NOW and not sleep all day like you do!

And that feeling the movements etc are just as exciting second time round, even if it is just for me!
