Is it normal to feel so hungry in the first trimester??

Hi

I'm only at 8 weeks but I'm absolutely ravenous! Is that normal? When I get really hungry I start to feel sick so have to eat which relieves the sick feeling. I'm probably having to eat every 2 hours! At this rate I will be the size of a house before I even go for the first scan!

I'm 8 weeks and I need another chocolate digestive now! Yes I think it's about listening to your body. I'm off a lot of foods and don't think I'm eating as much as I usually do but that's because I'm feeling nauseous. Also no wine makes me snack less at night! But I keep getting hunger pangs so I'm snacking regularly all day - sometimes healthy, sometimes not!

When I was 6-9 weeks I was the same, starving every two hours whereas normally I could go five to six hours easy without feeling peckish. It subsided after that.

I m 7 weeks with my first one and I feel hungry all the time - I have to carry food/ snacks with me wherever I go - and If I don't eat I feel sick - I have no other symptoms and just wondering if it's normal ( worried because I am already over 36 years:( )

Sparrowlegs248 · 14/10/2015 10:45

Perfectly normal. I never used to eat breakfast until i got to work. That had to change. If I didn't eat i felt soooo sick. I swiftly got into the habit of taking food and drink everywhere i went as i had to eat hourly. Sadly fruit and veg just didn't cut it - i couldn't stomach carrots! Or chocolate. But I ate a lot of carbs. Cheese and biscuit, crisps etc I found those go ahead biscuits quite good - the 3 pack ones, and ginger oatcakes (The nairns ones) And

I put on just under 2st in total and had a big baby so was quite pleased with that!

I didn't know I was pg until around 12 weeks. Looking back, the night I went to pizza express, had a portion of dough balls, a pizza, a pudding, then went home and had two rounds of toast should maybe have been a clue.

If it wasn't nailed down, I ate it.

ThatsNotMyRabbit · 14/10/2015 10:52

Oh yes.

I am a pig have a healthy appetite anyway but it went into overdrive when I was pregnant.

DH assumed I was just making the most of the "eat for two" thing but I truly was ravenous all the time. I ate a tremendous amount pretty much all the way through and enjoyed every minute :)

northdownmummy · 14/10/2015 11:02

Yes!!! Totally ravenous for the first few weeks and also found I started feeling sick if I got hungry. I resorted to emergency biscuits on my bedside table and bags of mini cheddars stashed at work/ in the car/ in every bag I own

I was much more hungry than usual in the first trimester. There were a few times I had to get up in the night for a banana and a glass of milk!
I aimed to eat little and often throughout the day and listen to my body; sometimes I was 'really' hungry so I'd eat, and other times it was a bit like 'sod it, I'm pregnant, tuck in' so I'd ignore that!
I'd echo what other people said about having healthy stuff on hand: cereal, yoghurt, cereal bars (full of sugar I know, but 9 Bars are good), nuts, dried fruit, seeds, fruit, vegetables and humous to dip etc.
During the second trimester I wasn't as hungry, and now I'm in the third I am more hungry again, partly cos you can only eat small amounts at a time!
I have also been much more thirsty throughout pregnancy too, so always have a bottle of (tap) water on hand.

Champagneformyrealfriends · 14/10/2015 11:15

I was! I was starving constantly. It's settled down now (14 weeks) though! Xx

Awfulknitter · 14/10/2015 15:57

I'm just getting over the 'morning' sickness now (week 14). When I was queasy, nibbling on things helped me feel a bit better, and then there were times when I just seemed to be absolutely ravenous, as don't-get-between-me-and-the-food ravenous. I ate so badly! For the queasy feelings, I tried to stick to rice crackers and dried fruit, but they just didn't work like crisps and biscuits Blush. For the hungryness, the best thing was a big bowl of cottage cheese with a diced-up avocado on top (not exactly low cal, but at least reasonably nutritious).

Now I'm not nearly so hungry all the time, thank goodness, otherwise I'd be well on the way to whale-shaped. (I'm sure that I put on about 4kg in the four weeks between the first midwife appointment and the first scan.)

brookeberry · 14/10/2015 16:16

Normal! I was ravenous from 8 weeks to 12 weeks - the hunger pangs woke me up and I eventually had to leave plain biscuits by the bed! It's calming down now at 13 weeks. Enjoy!

CoffeeAndOranges · 14/10/2015 17:20

I was really hungry too, although I don't remember it being a pleasantly hungry feeling, it was like a weird gnawing feeling, somewhere between hunger and nausea. Totally normal and totally hormonal. I felt constantly queasy from when I woke up til about 4pm from around 5 weeks til around 8 weeks, then it all died down.

Some people seem not to be able to keep anything down, some people seem to have to eat to avoid spewing. Some lucky folks feel totally normal (although they are probably stressing because they don't feel sick!). Bobbins to the 'not needing any more calories in the first 2 trimesters' - who writes this stuff and have they ever been pregnant?! These are probably the same people who say 'listen to your body'. At certain points in your life, your body screams 'give me cheese on toast or I'll spew!!'

Just another joy to look forward to is that as soon as you can eat more normally again, you'll probably get raging heartburn for much of the remainder of your pregnancy! Yay!

afkqueen · 16/11/2015 03:46

I'm 6 and a half weeks and feel hungry all the time. I eat constantly the entire day. Yet I lost 1.5kgs.
I make my own bars and snacks, full of nutrients, but delicious. I was never a fussy eater (my parents did not allow it!) so I am not fussy now either. Mmm, munching on a bar made of oats, sunflower seeds and dates. Yum!

Louise34567 · 16/11/2015 09:27

I'm exactly the same bubbles! I get morning sickness pretty much all day, every day and the only thing that seems to help it is eating beige carbs every few hours ...

user1476088546 · 12/10/2016 14:33

So in my first trimester I had constant sickness day and night and had no appetite at all. I'm 15 weeks this week and I'm constantly hungry! As soon as I've ate within half an hour I'm hungry again, and also through the night too which is pretty annoying. Along with this I'm still suffering with morning sickness and now getting terrible headaches aswell to the point where I have to go to bed! is there any end to this?? Symptoms seem to be getting worse! :(

Mommytobe2017 · 15/10/2016 19:11

I'm almost 6 weeks, one minute I'm not hungry then the next I'm starving. Sometimes I'm starving, start to eat, take a couple of mouthfuls then I don't want any more Hmm

MoonlightMojitos · 15/10/2016 19:51

I woke up at 4am this morning because I was so starving hungry it hurt. Had 2 prices of toast and a packet of crisps then back to bed. Then up again at 8am starving again! I'm only 6+2 and I've put on 4lbs in 3 weeks.

user1476088546 · 15/10/2016 20:24

I was exactly the same at 6 weeks so in the end I kept food by my bed because I always woke at 4. As the week goes by that passes. Try and eat something before going to bed like cereal which is what I did after a while and I slept past 4 then

Mommytobe2017 · 15/10/2016 20:44

I'm glad it's not just me that wakes up really early absolutely starving!

I've had to get up and have a glass of squash and some biscuits otherwise I can't get back to sleep!

user1476088546 · 15/10/2016 20:57

I'm 15w 4d and still wake for biscuits and squash haha the hunger pains are terrible if I don't and same I can't back to sleep otherwise. My appetite is coming back slowly now In the day thank god as is ive been off work 10 weeks with hyperemesis it's been awful

Moggysinger · 16/10/2016 17:32

Yes this was my normal in the first tri. I was never sick but if I went too long without eating (ie more than 2 hrs!) I felt nauseous, awful, and was awfully bad tempered. Dh didn't seem to get it and there were some very tense moments when he didn't feed me in time. I'm glad to say the crazy over eating subsided in the second tri and and now at 37 weeks my appetite has picked up again but I can't eat much as my stomach feels like it's the size of a conker. Enjoy being able to fit it in whilst you can!

Etonam · 13/01/2020 22:06

OP I could have wrote your post myself. Eating was the only thing that kept my nausea at bay in the first trimester. If I didn’t eat I threw up!

MrsA2015 · 14/01/2020 01:18

Only reason I’m awake and on mums net is because I’m SO HUNGRY. 6+1 weeks today and can’t stop stuffing. Just had hummus and breadsticks grapes crisps
