Weight loss during pregnancy

I have just found that I am pregnant and I am extremely overweight, wasn't intending on getting pregnant at the mo, wanted to lose all my weight beforehand, I have lost 2 stone on an extreme shakes only diet so far but still have 6 stone to lose, so we are talking alot of weight. Please can anyone advise if it is possible for me to carrying on losing weight whilst being pregnant, as I am sure being so overweight will not lead to the healthiest of pregnancies and the safety of my baby is paramount. Has anyone successfully lost weight whilst being pregnant?

I didn't have a vast amount of weight to lose but as I was already eating healthily and doing moderate exercise before both pregnancies (in an effort to get healthy for being pg) I carried on and did lose some more weight.

Don't continue with extreme diets but eat healthily and do what exercise you can manage - even 10 minutes walking a day. This will help you keep healthy which is important for your baby. Your midwife will probably have some advice for you too.

The 10/10 thread on here will help you with healthy eating and exercise.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

Congratulations!!! DO not do any kind of extreeme diet. Talk to your midwife they may refer you to a nutritionist to help you make choices that are good for you and the baby.

In any case you dont necessarilly need to panic. I have a high BMI but put on less than 12 pounds at 38 weeks! I wasnt dieting but the higher metabolism, walking and unintentionally making more healthy choices has lead to me not putting on too much weight. Limiting the caffene intake meant not too many cans of coke (I am not a saint and have given in sometimes) No alcohol and no foods off the "banned" lists forces you to eat better. My liking for strawberrys and tomatoes helped - my first trimester craving for carbs and chips did not!! (though I took the approach of - if you crave it give in but only until craving satisfied)

Yes, it's perfectly possible to lose weight during pregnancy. A personal friend of mine weighed 17 stone at conception, 14 stone after delivery.

There was an article in the papers just a few weeks ago about the lady who lost a huge amount (8 stone +) during pregnancy, there's a link somewhere on these pages.

I think also that it's Slimming World who do it free for pregnant ladies. Just kick the shakes/slimfast crap away - you need to eat!

PS Congrats on pregnancy!
