how long was it before you went into labour? I am terrified of being induced, after too many horror stories!

I really didn want to be induced with ds1 either, and spent hours on the internet reseaching the subject.

I was two weeks late, despite always measuring around 2 weeks smaller for my "dates" I didnt feel that I was "late" and wasnt at that desperate to give birth stage that most pregnant women seem to reach. I also have very long cycles and DS was a boy - all factors that I found out can add to the lenght of a pregnancy.

I was meant to be induced on a Friday morning but the hospital were so busy that I hdidnt get taken in until Saturday evening and DS was born sunday morning at 16 days over due.

I had heard horror stories of long drawn out labours with lots of intervention and my birthing plan was to give birth in a birthing pool with only gas and air!!

However, I can honestly say for me it was a good expereince. When you are induced you are given a time to arrive at the hospital - no wondering if its time to go to hospital yet or not! Plus you can get everything ready for you & little ones home coming! You have a midwife in the room at all times - you are not left to it like normal deliveries.

I had an epidural which I had said NO WAY to on my original birth plan and it caused no problems, i could even get up and swop positions - bed/birth ball/standing, although I was constantly strapped to a monitor so couldnt move a great deal.

With a sweep, if the baby/body isnt ready its not going to do anything. I had a very painful sweep at 40 weeks which did nothing but then I asked for another one at 42 weeks which caused a show.(on the Thursday) And when I went in to be induced I didnt need the pessaries. However I dont know if that due to the sweep or the fact that DS was nearly ready to come out! When I did my research, 80% of mums go into labour within 3 days of a succesful sweep. My labour was 12 hours from when they broke my waters to when I delivered! So there are some positive expereinces!!

Looking back I think i would have a sweep again if I thought baby was due very soon. However this time I have 4 weeks left to go and am much bigger than I was when I was late with DS and have already had enough so although I really dont want to go overdue, It would make life easier to be induced as I can sort DS1 out without the stress of getting him to my Mums & getting myself to hospital in time!

TamTam29 · 29/04/2009 18:05

Forgot to add - the reason why we induce in this country is because there is no reliable why of telling if baby is still ok and placenta is still working well. So we err on the side of caustion. (I had MW tell me when I was protesting about being induced "well baby is ok at the moment, but the minute we disconnect the monitor your baby could be in distress"!)

In other countries they wouldnt even consider inducing before 43 weeks!!

katiepotatie · 29/04/2009 20:42

Still no baby

TamTam - thanks for your reply, I'm glad there a some positive stories.I don't really have a problem with getting dd1 sorted as my mum lives in the next street, although she is going away on Monday!I had been told that contractions are far more painful if you have been induced and was hoping for a lovely natural birth like last time

A friend did tell me that in Europe, full term pregnancies are 42 weeks and not 40 weeks.

Sweep about 3pm, DS in my arms at 6:45pm!

outandabout · 01/05/2009 22:24

Hello

I had sweep about 1.30pm on a Monday and at 10.30pm that night I went into labour.

I had heard from people that it would hurt so I was shocked to be told it was all done when I thought she was just starting.

She did say I was "very ripe" so maybe thats why it didnt hurt.

Good luck!

katiepotatie · 01/05/2009 22:32

It bloody hurt again, she said maybe 1 cm dilated and cervix still long, very unlikely to go naturally. Looks like i'll be going in on Tuesday to be induced will be +12 days. Feel sorry for my mum though, she's going on holiday on Monday morning, she was in tears today

resigned myself to the fact that I'll be getting induced tomorrow Really want'ed this baby before today.

decafgirl · 04/05/2009 20:40

Good luck for tomorrow! Dont be at least there's no more hanging around.

I had a sweep at one week overdue and was in labour within half an hour - I'd been niggling on since the Friday & the sweep was on the Sunday but it wouldn't have worked if I hadn't been ready. The mw said I was already 2cm.

Is there a chance they'll give you the tablet or pessary and see if that starts you off without a drip first? xx

MrsMattie · 04/05/2009 20:41

Had one on my due date and one at 41 weeks. Had to be induced at 42+1.

katiepotatie · 04/05/2009 20:46

I'm just sad that my mum and dad left for holidays this morning will be glad baby will be here soon though.
I haven't actually been told what happens, just to go to maternity unit at 5pm tomorrow

decafgirl · 04/05/2009 20:50

5pm?! Bugger! I hope you've got a good book on the go...

With any luck they'll start with the low level stuff and give you a fighting chance.

Lots of luck xxx

katiepotatie · 06/05/2009 22:04

Our wee boy arrived at 7.38 on Tuesday morning, he obviously didn't want to be induced either! was admitted to the labour suite at 5.30, and after three big pushes he was here, got to come home that evening

Mummyfor3 · 06/05/2009 22:06

Congratulations!!

Glad it all happened for you - I take it you do not need my sweep stories, then ...

Enjoy your wee boy, how v nice .

CarrollCreative · 03/06/2009 11:59

I had my sweep today (40+3 days) and she said 'outer cervix' was soft but inner still closed...she broke through and did sweep. Not painful, only a deep uncomfortable feeling. Said she could feel baby's head, which made me burst in tears...now it all seems sooo real!

pranma · 03/06/2009 21:14

Mine was a long time ago but had sweep day before due date and started labour within an hour-delivery 19 hours later.

ohdearwhatamess · 03/06/2009 21:24

Had one at 40+2. I was already 5cm dilated but had no contractions. Nothing happened. Had another 48 hours after that.

Waters artificially broken later that day, in labour an hour later. Ds2 popped out an hour after that.

willmerbird · 12/06/2009 13:20

I had one last Tuesday at 40 + 3 but no joy so far. We have another one on Tuesday if nothing happens at the weekend, then if all else fails induced next Friday. Can't wait to meet little willmer now and feel like a whale!

LittleWhiteWolf · 31/07/2009 12:40

I had my sweep 8 days overdue and my mw said I was already 2cms dilated! I went home at 5, lost my plug at half 7, started to lose my waters at 8, went to hospital at 10 and DD was born at 12:59 the next day. Worked for me, but I was already progressing IYSWIM?

YummyMummy17 · 01/08/2009 10:40

I had a sweep on MONDAY ! (40weeks exactly) Now 5days over due and nothings happened Have another sweep booked for this monday coming, hopefully this one works, quite upset the 1st one hasnt worked, quite uncomfortable and had to leave my dignity at the door !
