been excited for weeks about the prospect of finding out what my baby is and we got 'possibly a girl' then 10 mins later 'i dont now what it is'

im gutted, really wanted to find out and now im none the wiser, me and hubby both saw what looked like girl bits when she said it (3 lines) but she was rubbish and didnt seem that interested in looking for us....what do u think the chances of 'possibly being a girl' are??

Awww what a shame for you!

We had a private scan at 17 weeks to find out the sex last time (a girls after 2 boys)

It was about £70 but worth it for knowing IMO, lots more time to prepare and before you have a little screaming pink baby clinging onto you

I wouldn't take 'possibly' as anything.

DawnAS · 21/04/2009 19:45

Unfortunately it sounds like she wasn't sure, so I wouldn't pin your hopes on a girl...

However, when you have another scan, you can always ask again then. We did, even though we'd been told after an Amnio that we were having a girl - but I was so convinced it was going to be a boy that I didn't believe them and asked them to check at the next scan!!

It really sounds like the Sonographer wasn't bothered though - how annoying for you!! I hope you do find out at the next scan.

Tbh she wasn't interested in looking for you because the scan isn't for that - there are loads of different things they need to look at during the 20 week scan to make sure the baby is ok, that's what the scan is for.

I'm surprised she was even prepared to speculate, ime most hospitals have a firm policy of not even looking these days, is that not the case for you?

I understand you being keen to know, but your best bet would be to go for a private sexing scan if it's important to find out.

franfoxy2003 · 21/04/2009 19:51

think im gonna look into a private sexing scan now guys, our hospital is usually more than willing to tell you but the woman i had today was just not interested!

im so annoyed, feel like i have had something taken away from me!!

All 3 of my NHS sonographers were LOVELY and looked very hard to find and the sex of our babies, and were right each time.

I know its 'not for that' but once the scan is performed and everything is deemed ok I can't see the harm is asking to peep? takes 60 seconds at most!

hf128219 · 21/04/2009 19:55

My sonographer was lovely too at my 20 week scan and said '90% sure a girl' She was right.

flowerybeanbag · 21/04/2009 19:58

No there's no harm asking to peep, of course not, and if the sonographer is willing to do it, then fine, great but they shouldn't be expected to I don't think.

As I said, most women I know have had it made very clear prior to the scan that there is a firm policy of not looking, and for personal reasons I also get v p$&d off at people who seem to forget that it's an anomaly^ scan, not a scan to see if it's a boy or a girl. That's not a comment about the OP at all, just lots of people I know who get all excited about the prospect of the 20 week scan completely forgetting how important it is and the reason for it.

Go for it with the private scan, they're not hugely expensive.

mumface · 21/04/2009 20:15

I was told it looked like a boy & she pointed out the bits & took a photo. The image was very blurred & I have since scrutinzed the picture & it is quite clear to me now that his 'bits' are actually his fist holding the umbilical cord. You can even see the arm attatched. It is also much to high up to be his genitals!I don't think she was very experienced. So I wouldn't believe it till I see it born.

franfoxy2003 · 21/04/2009 20:53

well i found a private sexing scan quite near me for £70 so gonna go for that in a few weeks...im just not happy and wont believe the 'possibly a baby girl' although people have said that its more than likely a girl...want to know for definate!

Just had mine. We got a leaflet beforehand that made if very clear that finding out the sex wasn't the purpose of the scan, and that we should NOT ask. But when we got there, the sonographer asked if we wanted to know the sex and spent a good amount of time trying to prod baby into the right position.

We were rewarded with a very clear view of a little willy sticking up.

Think it really depends who you get and whether the baby is being at all cooperative. So sorry you didn't get to find out, I would have gone for a private scan if we hadn't found out too.

controlfreakythecontrolfreak · 21/04/2009 23:08

i think the chances of it being a girl are..... oooooh....... 50 / 50.

hf128219 · 21/04/2009 23:12

The main issue in a lot of hospitals is ' selective sexing' - 20 weeks and you can still have a termination. That is why some hospitals wont divulge.

Mummyfor3 · 21/04/2009 23:17

My understanding was that a lot of obstetric units will not comment on gender of the unborn child on ultrasound scans as there is a significant failure rate and some places have had complaints/been sued ( not sure which?) by people who decorated nurseries in pink and then went on to have a "blue" baby, or vice versa.
If this is not just an urban myth then I can frankly see were they are coming from!

SuziSeis · 21/04/2009 23:21

well i think it is a girl

i have lots of boys and they always ask us if we want to know

we dont - but willies show up

TheCollection · 21/04/2009 23:26

That's funny Suzi... how many is 'lots', out of curiosity?

We had a doctor instead of a sonographer, which might account for her confidence: she told us it was a girl, and when we asked how sure she was, she said ?95%, because we never say 100%, but you can curse me if it?s a boy?.

emmmz1980 · 22/04/2009 14:07

at one of my scans they asked if i wanted to know...i saed yes....she sed ooo looks like ur having a boy, then a minute later sed...hmmm il take that back i dont know now what ur having as there was too much cord there!! frustrating lol!! other 4 scans not been able to tell! im now expecting a suprise in 2 weeks lol!!!

MuffinBaker · 22/04/2009 14:08

They haven't taken anything away from you.

You just have to wait a bit longer to find out the sex of your child.

Picante · 22/04/2009 14:11

I had a private scan yesterday for that very reason. Worth every penny to find out it was definitely a girl! And I got it all on DVD!

buggylovinmummy · 22/04/2009 14:15

Hi i had the same problem and like disenchanted i paid for a gender scan at 26 weeks. It was £75 but they guarenteed they would find out the sex of the baby even if i had to keep going back for as many scans as needed until they could see. First scan and straight away within the first minute they told me it was a boy. Was hoping to get more scans for my money!!
