I went to EPU today, and they couldn't see anything on the scan. My last period was 5th March.

They did a pregnancy test and it was negative. But I had downed loads of water just before it.

Then I came home and did a pregnancy test and it is positive 1-2 weeks.

I'm in a state.

They said I've miscarried.

Have I? Please can someone shed some light?

Breaking my heart at mo and DP is so upset, too.

When did you first get a positive test result?

cupofteaplease · 09/04/2009 12:45

Were you in EPU because of pain or bleeding?

Spidermama · 09/04/2009 12:49

So sorry you're going through this MOB. I know that it takes a while for the hormone to leave your body so if you are miscarrying then you'll still show up as pregnant for sometime after.

I'm really really sorry. It's very tough and you will need time to grieve.

It is probably too early for me to do this but here's some practical advice if you feel ready to read it....

My first M/C was in hospital. Awful! They gave me pethidine and I felt terrible and it took ages to recover emotionally. I felt I'd lost control.

My second I did myself at home. I caught the stuff which was coming out. I even found the sac, said 'goodbye' and gave it a good burial. This really helped me let go and grieve.

All the very best of love and luck. xx

Hi all.

Went to EPU as I had had a little bit of black blood when I was due on my period and so the doctor wanted to be safe. I've been to see her this afternoon and she said that she's inclined to think I'm just at the very beginning of my pregnancy and so it won't show up on a tummy scan yet. She said the hospital tests have been wrong on some occasions in the past, and she is inclined to think that they clearblue test is more accurate.

2 home tests have been positive this afternoon.

So it's a waiting game now.

very odd that a home test would show positive, but a hospital one negative. It could be that you are very early in pregnancy and not being picked up by hospital tests yet? If you are only 1-2 weeks then doubtful that anything would show on a normal scan - were you offered a transvaginal scan?

Afraid it will be a waiting game. fingers crossed for you.

MumOfBaby · 09/04/2009 16:41

They said they would only do the internal scan if the test came up positive, but it didn't.

But then it was practically water as I hadn't eaten all day and I'd just downed loads of water to have a full bladder for the scan IYSWIM.

I think that you could still be pregnant - at the EPU I went to they would not scan you til you were 6 weeks despite bleeding (unless it was a suspected ectopic).

Very best of luck x

becaroo · 09/04/2009 16:55

I was also told they had that rule because they could not see anything til 6 weeks.

pginthecloset · 09/04/2009 17:15

MOB sorry you are going through this . Are you still bleeding? How much black blood was there and how long did it last?

There is a chance you are still pregnant, but of course nobody wants to give false hope. Fingers crossed for you x

ceebie · 09/04/2009 17:55

MOB, so sorry to hear that you are going through all this stress and anxiety. Not helped by the uncertainty of what is going on.

I have been told that the little cheap sticks used in hospitals aren't anywhere near as sensitive as the shop-bought home pregnancy tests. The last thing I want to do is falsely raise your hopes especially if the hospital, for whatever reason, seems to think you've miscarried. However they have been known to be wrong. Could it be possible that you're very early in your pregancy and not showing up on their tests, and also too early to show up on the scan? A little bit of black blood doesn't necessarily have to mean bad news - believe me, I miscarried at 6.5 weeks and you'd certainly know all about it - large quantities of red blood and clots for hours.

Can't they do blood tests to check hormone levels and repeat 48 hours later? I think levels should be doubling if you're pregnant but going down if you're miscarrying?

Unfortunately, so early on in pregancy, it may have to be a case of waiting to see what the outcome will be - so stressful for you, I'm sorry.

MumOfBaby · 09/04/2009 17:57

It was just a tiny black smudge in my knickers and then a tiny bit on the loo roll- and DP noticed a little bit of pinky colour after we'd been bd'ing earlier this week. Nothing more than that.

I'm saying lots of prayers in the hope that there is still a baby in there.

I won't speak to anyone except DP at the moment so thank God for MN once again.

Would second what the other poster said, you would know if you were m/c...pain, clots and lots of bright red blood.

It could be an implantation bleed - I had one of these when pg with ds1. Is it about the time you would have had a period?

I dont want to give you false hope, obviously, but I think from what you have sadi that there is still hope x

timmette · 09/04/2009 18:30

I don't want to frighten you but that is how I miscarried with a very little very dark blood - it progressed obviously. But at the same time it could also be nothing sadly I suspect no matter what we say no one will be able to reassure you completely until you see a scan. Everytime I went to the doc. - hospital I had a vaginal scan as you see much more earlier I was told. Can you try and push for a vaginal scan - it might be reassuring and give you good news .

orangehead · 09/04/2009 18:39

If your last peroid was the 5th of march that would make 5 weeks, that is too early to show up on the scan. They really should not of bothered. I had a positive at home and then negative at docotors. To which they told me not too worry as the home ones are stronger than the ones they use. The hospital sound very stupid too worry you like that when its too early to tell. They would of been better telling you to come back in a week to rescan you. Thats what most do when they cant see anything. Im so sorry you going through this. Hope you ok and Im afraid its the waiting game for now.

iateallthecreameggsyummy · 09/04/2009 19:59

oh sweet I totally understand what your going through at the moment i truly do!
It really is a waiting game and i know how hard it is i'm going through similar to you right now also.
If you need to talk let me know im happy to give you my mail addy, i won't hijack your thread just to say i know what your going through.
If your hospital is anything like mine they probably wont offer you blood tests for hcg,nor a scan unless your 6 weeks minimum so keep an eye on things and see how you get on. When was your last positive test? It may be that it was to late in the day to test positive if your very early on.
Thinking of you xx

prettyfly1 · 09/04/2009 20:07

Its not just you btw - last year they told me I wasnt pregnant - had three positive clear blues. Sadly I did mc a week later but the hospital saod exactly the same thing to me - my doctor confirmed it all in the end.

tryingtobemarypoppins · 09/04/2009 20:20

What a terrible and sad time for you, I really feel for you.

Does anyone know if a pregnancy is early and you have bledding, should you always go to hospital, even if its just a month or so? If it was out of hours for example should you always go to A&E? I feel so bad of the OP and sometimes wonder if hospital make it worse in terms of worry etc?

hellymelly · 09/04/2009 20:41

I had slight bleeding that I think was implantation bleeding, but I got a vaginal scan-that showed the sac clearly but it was too early to see a heartbeat so I had to wait another week to see if it was a viable pregnancy.(she is two soon!).Can you push for a vaginal scan? I am very surprised the EPU didn't do one for you as an abdominal at this stage is useless. they didn't test me at all, just did the scan.I was maybe a few days or so further on than you.Otherwise you can keep tesing at home with first morning urine and if the pregancy is progressing then the line will be getting stronger.I really hope for the best for you.
