They did last Pg too . I have been told I have slightly low iron and am supposed to take iron three times a day .
Each time I take it I get a headache ,crampy stomach and feel really sick with it too.

Can't face taking another one .

I already eat very well and make sureI eat lots of greens .

Feeling really rubbish right now .

Sorry to hear this. Do you know it's best to take them with orange juice, and not tea or coffee or milk because milk hinders iron absorption.

Maybe you can take floradix or spatone instead? They are easier on the stomach.

Iron three times a day is a lot. Even when I lost loads of blood and had a very low haemoglobin after given birth, I only had to take two a day.

I don't drink tea or coffee I usually have them with water.

I thought three times a day was a lot too will give MW a ring and double check.

Thanks Belgo.

Take Spatone. I cannot tolerate iron tablets, but had no problems with Spatone in orange juice.

MegBusset · 05/04/2009 11:45

Spatone is great stuff, I've been taking it with no problems at all.

The other possiblility is to ask for ferrous gluconate rather than ferrous sulphate. I have had occasions when I had to take three a day and I've found it's much gentler on the stomach, but they won't prescribe it unless you ask. I would never take ferrous sulphate as it make me feel really rubbish too, but no problems with ferrous gluconate

another vote for Spatone. If you have slightly low levels this would be ideal. I had pretty low levels and insisted on taking this instead as I just could not tolerate iron tablets!

I was prescribed 2 tablets a day and felt really rotten on them - sick etc etc. GP not keen for me to go with Spatone etc so reduced dose to one tablet a day - side effects all gone and iron levels stable shortly after.

iron tablets are terrible - i felt worse on them than off them - floradix is definitely much better - see if you can get it on script as is expensive otherwise

i did have a long argument with my gp as to why i should take something that made me feel much worse and she basically said i would most certainly have a pph if i didn't

eating dried apricots, dark choc, spinach, red meat and drinking guiness are all fab for the iron levels.

though not all at once (though with pg cravings you never know)

tassisssss · 05/04/2009 19:36

spatone worked great for me too. love the stuff!

Triggles · 06/04/2009 12:39

I can't take the iron tablets either, but the Floradix works well for me.
