Hi im only just over 11 weeks pregnant and have already put on 1/2 a stone i dont think im eating much more than pre- pregnancy although i do make sure i have 3 meals a day, but i seem to be putting on too much weight far too soon. Im a bit worried because i was already 1 1/2 stone over weight before i fell pregnant. This is my 5th baby and iv had a long break of 13 years since my last pregnancy im 42. Could it be my age ?

Bumping for you.

hobbgoblin · 11/02/2009 11:53

Don't know but I always gained quite a bit in all pregnancies, esp. early on. am trying very hard not to this time round so have been very VERY careful.

1st Trimester lost a few pounds due to sickness then gained over half stone and have now lost that again due to stress and not eating. Not recommended.

What I'm saying is, that when not sick and not stressed and not over eating I still gained very quickly just by eating well.

Think it's just unfortunate part of doing the right thing for the baby, sadly. Which is a bit of a pi$$er really if you are trying not to get too big.

PussinJimmyChoos · 11/02/2009 11:59

Do not worry. Your body knows what to do to take care of the pregnancy. As long as you are eating nutritious meals and not having junk for lunch/dinner or snacking on sugary stuff/cakes (although the odd treat when pg is totally allowed ) then its pretty much out of your hands

I was constantly hungry when pg with DS and although I ate healthy foods and snacked on raw veg etc, I gained 4 stone...I gave up reading the 'what you should have gained by now' guidelines as found it can vary so much from woman to woman and DS turned out just fine!

mum2b09 · 11/02/2009 11:59

I dont know if it has anyhting to do with age but my friend who is 30 has put on over a stone and a half and shes only 20 weeks pregnant im 36 weeks pregnant and have put on just over a stone throughout my whole pregnancy and im only 18 so maybe theres something in the age thing??

If you are eating 3 well balanced healthy meals a day i dont see why you would be putting on too much weight to quickly.. speak to your mw about your weight gain im sure she will be able to tell you if it is okay xxxx

MrsMattie · 11/02/2009 12:08

I really wouldn't worry. There is such a variation in weight gain during pregnancy between different women, and even in the same women in different pregnancies (I gained 4 stone in my first pregnancy and only 2 stone in my second pregnancy). Just listen to your body. I'm sure your MW will reassure you.

Don't worry too much - I put a stone on in my first trimester and now at 24 weeks I have put about another half a stone on. I was also overweight to start with. I ate a lot in the first trimester to try to stop feeling sick. I didn't exercise much either, but have been doing more walking lately. My midwife's not concerned about it, so I'm not. I try to eat healthily and have treats too but more or less I think I'm doing OK. I know I'll put more on in the last few months, but as long as my midwife is happy then I'm not going to worry.

xx

I have put on 4 st altogether, I am 39+5 today. Weight stopped creeping up in the last month, but the again, 4 stone, here you go. Just like you, was trying to be sensible, did not have morning sickness and in firts 3 months i put on less than half of stone. But then - 2nd trimester, OMG, eating the same, but m,y body was just storing everythingup!! I just could not believe it!!!
Even my appearance conscious DH does not care anymore- for him the healthy baby is more important than me being slim, and then having weak or unhealthy child. I am planning to lose it all after.
You lose over 1 stone swith delivery, so there is good news!
I think by the end of PG you do not care at all, you just want to get to the end and have the baby , healthy, and out as soon as poss!
so do not be hard on yourslef.

I'm 18 weeks and have put on almost a stone. Like you I'm not eating much more (maybe a little but really not a lot) and I'm not snacking on biscuits/cakes/chocolate. I'm not happy about it but I don't see there's a lot I can do as I need to eat sensibly for the baby so going on a diet wouldn't do it a lot of good. I'm just hoping I'm not the size of a whale by the end of it!

Rozebud · 12/02/2009 21:54

Hey,

I am 14 weeks and put on at least a stone in first trimester. I was eating really healthily, though definitely more than usual (was getting so hungry and craving a diverse range of foods) plus had 3 weeks when I felt sick and just wanted carbs and cheese.

Yet I have been exercising 5 times a week (either swimming, gym or walking 45 minutes). I was quite slim before I got pregnant and and just trust this is what my body needs, and it has been storing it all - though have to admit at times it has been stressing me out a bit too.

Everyone is different, my midwife said to remember part of the weight gain can be increased blood, water retention, plus your uterus, glands, and breasts are growing all the time in trimester 1 and you need to put down some fat deposits to produce milk etc.

Don't worry and good luck - am sure it will come off and hope you stop worrying about it and just enjoy producing a healthy babe

fidelma · 13/02/2009 11:31

I am 6 weeks with my 4th and know I am putting on weight all ready.I have to eat alot to avoid hyperemmisis but i am just greatful that I am not beeing sick all the time.I always put on 3-4 stone in all but I stop weighing myself as it just messes with my head.Always lose all the weight through breast feeding within 6 months it is amazing that I dont breast feed forever!!! A health baby is the goal.

Qally · 13/02/2009 14:19

I was 9 stone when I got pregnant. I had bad SPD, so usual brisk exercise was out (was incredibly active before), and craved cake - and was generally starving! I was 14 stone a few days after giving birth and 15 just before. My son was 8 lb 4 oz, my labour was uncomplicated and I only needed gas and air (and I am a giant wimp!) and 3 months later I am 11.5 stone.

Basically yeah it's a bore, putting on lots of weight in a skinny obsessed culture, and yeah it was really hard (and I felt really ashamed, crazily) when I first started to balloon, before the bump was glaringly obvious. You can't alter a lifetime of worrying about weight overnight, no matter how silly you feel for it, or how wrong it is that our culture does that to women.

I was a bit when I saw pics of myself a week after the birth, but having a baby is such a special thing, and weight that goes on that easily can come off that easily. I just eat normally again and am moving around more and it's happening at a steady and unplanned pace. Just enjoy the being able to stop body-anxieties. Your body is doing something amazing.

Nekabu · 13/02/2009 16:38

Qally, 2 1/2 stone weight loss in 3 months is very fast! I don't wish to teach my granny to suck eggs but perhaps rein back a bit on the speed at which you lose the rest?

Poppet45 · 13/02/2009 18:55

I've bloody lost 5 lbs in weight in my first trimester. I'm just coming up to 14 weeks and my weights now down to 9st 11lb. Didn't have any morning sickness, just a little mild nausea every now and then, but really really craved fresh veggies and salads. It's been like being on a Gillian McKeith diet.... if anything I think my bumps more pronounced as it's got nowhere to hide. Have to say I'm actually loving my new figure coming in though. I think pregnant women look amazing - whatever shape or size.
Maybe I'll start to gain weight in this trimester. I did manage to eat a whole Jamaican Ginger cake over a period of 36 hours yesterday so I'm hopeful.

brettgirl2 · 13/02/2009 19:04

i lost weight in first trimester poppet - I'm now 32 weeks and avoiding the scales! It took me till I was 16 weeks to get to pre-pg weight.

Qally · 14/02/2009 01:00

Nekabu, I'm not dieting - I just ate 2 eclairs today, and a roast dinner! Nor am I doing planned exercise, because I don't have the energy. I'm just running around after a baby, and bf. I put on 6 stone (even the medical staff admitted that was triple the advised gain), and now I'm eating a bit more sensibly agan, the weight that was pure gluttony/water retention has fallen off fast. I can't eat this way and be as slim as before, but then I don't really care right now, either.

(Oh, I'm also mid-30s, so not with the metabolic advantages of a 25 year old, either, loganberry.)

I have no cure for my concertina tummy or stretch marks, though. I hear that's just the luck of the genetic draw.

Nekabu · 14/02/2009 10:40

Qally, sounds like it's coming off a treat! I think the only way I'd lose that much weight in 3 months is if you welded my teeth together and chopped my bum off ...

susia · 14/02/2009 21:24

well I was 8 and a half stone (I'm 5'3) before getting pregnant. I put on a stone in the first 2 months and by the time my son was born I was 12 and a half stone. It was bad because I was enormous, exhausted and had bad carpel tunnel sydrome which may have been caused by putting on so much weight. I think it may have been partly my age (I was 37).

I was very lucky though because I lost it all within 3 months with no effort.

But I did get stretched skin from the rapid weight gain and loss and would definately try to avoid so much weight gain espec so quickly if I had another...

susia · 14/02/2009 21:28

just read what you said nekabu about the weight loss and I really did lose 4 stone in 3 months but I was eating loads and breastfeeding!

I wasn't dieting, what happened though was that for 3 solid months after giving birth I had horrendeus night sweats, so much so that I had at least one shower a night. Every morning I was few pounds lighter until I got back to my original weight. (5 years later I'm actually about half a stone heavier!)
