Chicken pox and pregnancy - would you visit ?

Dd's best friend has just come down with chicken pox. DD had it 18 months ago so would normally pop round.

I am 36 weeks pregnant and had chicken pox v.v.v. badly as a child and obv didn't get it when dd did.

So, was just going to pop round anyway but wondered if I should avoid just to be on safe side although I think really that is being over cautious ??? What would you do ?

I thought chicken pox was dangerous in very early pg (miscarriage risk) but not later. Although I think it would be preferable to not have chicken pox at the birth in case of passing it on.

Although you are most likely immune from your childhood, most are.

Probably I would go, but it's up to you at the end of the day.

My children recently had chicken pox and I'm pregnant - obviously I had no way of escaping them - I did speak to my GP who told me that as I have already had it baby is protected by your immunity whilst in the womb.
Go and visit her - I was going nuts!!!

If you have had it yourself and are DEFINITELY immune, then it is not dangerous. Having had it doesn't necessarily mean you are immune though - some people like me can't make the antibodies.

It is a serious risk to those with no immunity in early pregnancy - birth defects. In later pregnancy it is very unpleasant, has a higher risk of complications like pnuemonia and can be passed on to the baby.

I know Sniffyhock - I remember my week of confinement with dd. Hence why I was keen to go.

I really truly think I am immune. As I said, I didn't catch it when my dd had it and I definitely had a really nasty case of it as a child.

I'll just wait for confirmation it is chicken pox and then offer to pop round.

Varicella virus is most dangerous to mum in the first and third trimesters. If you have had it before you can still get it again. If you have gone over already, then hopefully it will all be fine as it would be very unlucky to get it twice, but personally I don't see the point in risking it for one play date?

Good luck with your new LO.

some advice re exposure here

i was wondering about this last week...had invited my neighbour and her little boy around (I am 35 weeks pg) and she said there'd been cp at his nursery but she didn't know if he'd caught it or not yet.
my dd also had it at 18m and I didn't catch it, I also have vivid memories of having it as a child so reckon I am most likely immune (though I guess not 100% guaranteed).
anyway I ummed and ah'ed but in the end they came around as I'd been trying to get together with her for ages and didn't want to put it off...

so I'd probably go but as others have said...it's up to you!

Thanks.

Will wait and see what the official verdict is first off and see what DH thinks. I just remember the mind numbing tedium of being stuck in but my baby has to be my priority.

Thanks for all your thoughts !

Totally up to you but I encountered chickenpox when pg with DD two years ago and was told to avoid it at the beginning and end of pg. Apparently at the end, there is a risk that the baby could be born with it cause you could carry it. I don't profess to be a medical expert by any means but that is what I read at the time. I had a blood test done to check my immunity - just spoke to the GP and they arranged. Turned out I was immune as had had it as a child but have heard rumours of people getting it twice.

Up to you but maybe quick phonecall to GP or midwife might put your mind at ease?
