... anybody experienced this? What did you do? I've been vegetarian 15 years but I keep thinking about meat. My husband will be so pleased!! But it feels wrong!

After 20 years of being veggie eating meat felt morally reprehensible for about 3 days - then I went mad; more carnivorous than omnivorous, not sure I touched a vegetable for the next few months.

Have settled down now; eat lots of veggie food and often opt for veggie options in restaurants when I'm not sure where the meat was sourced. But also enjoy sharing family meals especially Sunday roast. I buy the best, most free range meat I can afford and use every last bit making soups/stocks etc from bones.

titmouse - lucky you.

I asked DH to 'do a Joey' for me but he refused

I was veg for 9 years before becoming pg - it wasn't so much that I craved meat (never been anaemic) but oh, my, GOD, I was SO hungry ALL the freaking time, so yeah, any meat that was in my path got hoovered up along with everything else.

kept it up while bfing (still feeling ravenous, 17m in) but am now eating meat meals only 1-2x a week. And yes, I console myself by buying the best I can find.

I just figured any urge that strong is one you're probably better off following.

I was veggie for 25 years until I got pregnant and I felt completely desperate for meat.I used to gaze at roast beef in M&S! had oily fish instead and small amounts of organic chicken-felt and still feel very guilty about it but I figured if I wanted it so badly then maybe the baby really needed it and so I have come to think of pregnancy and breastfeeding as a state of giving up to the babies needs and going with your body for a while whatever your moral compass!

Ooh I have a friend that's 'doing a Joey' for me! She's a doctor and quite firm in her belief that pregnant women shouldn't stay veggie - I disagree with her as long as you're making sure you're getting everything you need, but it means she was really up for helping me to justify eating meat during pregnancy!

I don't eat much - my husband's still veggie for starters, and he does all the cooking - but have bits of meat or fish occasionally. I'll be stopping after the birth though, and bringing up the baby veggie until he's old enough to choose for himself. And I don't eat fast food anyway - boycotted McDonalds etc for years before I was veggie!

I started a thread similar to this a few months ago titmouse - after craving fish and chips big time - I did not give into craving (my dh is also a veggie of 20 years so he would have disapproved for a start) - but I still have a bisto kid moment every time I pass a chippy (not many here thank god). I sympathise but as long as you are getting all the nutrients you need from your diet and taking supplements if necessary then you don't have to eat meat if you don't want to.

If you do give in do not feel guilty though.

I have 4 weeks to go and my main craving is a brie and grape sandwhich which will be my reward after delivering dc 3 successfully (fingers crossed).

Ooh yes bigmouth, I can't wait to eat brie and goat's cheese again! They're things you eat so much when you're veggie too, it's really hard to cut them out of your diet.

I've been a veggie for 20 years now, and decided to start eating fish when I became pregnant, just because its supposed to be good "brain food". I suspect I'll be able to give it up again once the baby's born cos I'm not that keen.

I've also been taking Pregnacare religiously since I found out I was pregnant as I am not the healthiest of veggies!

I have had a mild craving for roast chicken but have not given in so far (35 weeks)....

NotAnOtter · 26/09/2008 23:44

i always crave meat when pg but could NOT ...

find it crazy how many of you have

Louisexox · 27/09/2008 12:03

I'm a veggie, have been for 16 years(quite a long time considering I'm 20 so decided to become a veggie when I was 4. I'm 37 weeks pregnant and the only strange thing I have currentley is I love the smell of bacon and black pudding. I could never eat it though I've devoted so much of my life to animal rights and not eating anything that had a mother and father. I'd say it's will power more than anything else, also it could be that the woman is lacking in a vitamin or iron etc so should get that checked out.

I did when I was pregnant with DS2 - in fact, it was buying a pork pie one lunchtime that made me realise I was! I was in Tesco and saw them and thought "Ooh - I just fancy one of those...." I ate quite a bit of chicken during that pregnancy and then stopped when he was born. Didn't crave it with DS3 though

MsG · 27/09/2008 12:40

Been thinking about this as my doctor said she wasn't sure if I'd be getting enough B12 from Pregnacare and my diet alone (strict veggie, but I eat cheese like it's going out fashion!) So when I saw my acupuncturist the other day, who's also a midwife, I asked her and she said B12 is in dairy products!!

Have stocked up on Marmite.

Have to say, I'm too tired to think about food too much at the mo!!

moonlily · 30/09/2008 18:01
