I'm I miscarrying?

I'm just over five weeks pregnant with my first pregnancy and over the last five days have been experiencing bleeding. Started off on day one a small spots of blood (which I thought was spotting) then on day two in the evening had some deep red/blown blood when I wiped myself which was only there once. Day three back to small brown spots, then day four in the morning after wiping, again deep red blood. Day five brown blood all throughout the day. Not pain, but very tender just below the stomach and some very light back pain. Pregnancy test still showing pregnant. Doctor reckons I could be losing it. Have a scan booked in when I'm six weeks. Does anyone reckon my Chances of this not being a miscarriage?

I had an early miscarriage at the beginning of the year...so I know the torture of constantly going to the loo and checking, and then the torture of waiting days for a scan!

Unfortunately, pregnancy, especially early pregnancy is so unpredictable that it could be fine, or it could be a bad sign.

All I would say is that if it turns into proper fresh red blood and a good flow ( like a period ) then it is probably a bad sign.

However, the only way to tell is the scan.

So good luck! I hope it is good news!

Cant believe the NHS, what do we pay our taxes for?? I have been bleeding all over the weekend, so I rang the midwife centre first thing this morning, and the stupid receptionist wouldnt let me speak to a midwife as I had not been into see them yet (my appointment isnt until 18th) I demanded I speak with someone, she ended up putting me through to the EPU, out of town. The nurse told me as I had been bleeding my doctor should of refered me over the weekend, as they are open, she explained they would see me today but could'nt do so without a referal so I should ring the midwife centre where I live, she also said that they actually have a EPU and could scan me without me having to drive to them 30miles away. So I called back my local midwife unit and managed to speak to a midwife, what good use that was!! She told me that as I was only in the early stages of my pregnancy I needed to speak to my doctor, she couldn't do anything unless he referred me! God I could of screamed!! So I rang my doctors and was told the doctor would ring me back, that was at 10am this morning, after numerous phone calls he finally rang me a minute ago. He advised me that it was now to late to have a scan as they only scan in the mornings, again I wanted to scream!!! He said if I wanted I could go down and see him this evening, not much good that will do as he cant scan me, even with me protesting he said there was nothing more he could do. So after a day of anxious waiting Im still no further on!!! Dont you just love the NHS?

ellsbellzie · 08/09/2008 19:03

Just been to see my doctor, and as I suspected not much use, though he was very nice he examined me and that was about it. I asked if he could try for a heart beat as id read on here sometimes one can be detected as early as 6 weeks, he was happy to try but only managed to find mine, not very reasuring, though he said it doesnt mean anything at 6 weeks! He appologised for not getting back to me sooner in the day and promised he'd sort me a scan out first thing in the morning, ive got to call at 930am! God its going to be a agonising and long night but hopefully I know one way or another tommorw, fingers crossed!!

Ralphie0956 · 09/09/2008 10:31

I spose your still at the hospital right about now, I hope everything works out ok, let us know the outcome.
I went to A&E yesterday as I had really bad pains, got told that the blood I was seeing was really old blood (hence the colour) and that my womb was completely shut, so all fingers and toes crossed for scan tomorrow!

Wishing you the best for todays scan.x

lucykate · 10/09/2008 19:40

ralphie - how did the scan go?, fingers crossed for good news for you.

Ralphie0956 · 11/09/2008 16:02

Lucykate, unfortunately I found out that i'm having an Ectopic Pregnancy! I'm ok, sort of got my head around it, although I can't help thinking that I would have rather had a miscarriage (I know that sounds bad, but it would have been easier).
I'm back up the hospital tomorrow to see whether it had started to destroy itself (which I'm told the body sometimes does) if not, then drugs and hopefully I can't avoid surgery seeing as it's been picked up quickly etc.

I will give my body some time to recover but I just hope that I can fall pregnant again and have some sort of normal pregnancy next time round, even though I have been told that I'm more likely to have another Ectopic than someone who hasn't.

Thanks for asking though x

oh no, am really sorry to hear that, i just hope that whatever happens next, it goes well. it's crap when this kind of thing happens first time round, it is really common though (doesn't help though at this stage, i know). i had 2 m/c's in between my 2 dc's, and even in both my successful pregnancies. had problems with bleeding etc. but still, all you can do is try again. exactly a year to the day after my second m/c, i gave birth to ds, and after getting to know him as he's grown up (he's now 3), he is most certainly the one we were supposed to have.

take care and i'll be thinking of you tomorrow, x.

ellsbellzie · 13/09/2008 16:51

Hi dont know if anyone is still following this thread. Just wanted to say that unfortunately my bleeding was an eptopic pregnancy, I have been in hospital for 4 days but they have now let me go home as my HG level has gone down to 80 so they said it should just sort it self out without me having to have an opperation, I have got to go back on Monday and hopefully my HG level should be 0. Txs for everyone support.

Ralphie how did your scan go? Hope every thing is ok! x

ilovetochat · 13/09/2008 17:04

just to say i'm really sorry for both of you and hope you are both keeping your chins up. {{{hugs}}}

Ralphie0956 · 14/09/2008 11:41

Ellsbellzie, yeah mine seems to be the same (ectopic) although mu HGC levels were at 583 on Friday but they seem to think that becuase of the amount of blood i'm losing it might take care of itself like yours, will hopefully know more on Monday when they take my blood again. x

Ralphie

Me too ive got to have another blood test Monday and hopefully mine has gone down. I have been bleeding alot but not sure if its a period did they say to you this would happen, as when I was in hospital I was only spotting brown blood, I wasn't really told much at all. I'd really like another internal scan as the first one detected a 'mass' on my left side but nothing in my tube, I want to be sure this isnt going to affect my next pregnancy. Did they advise you how long to wait before trying again, Im really keen to get going its all thats keeping me sane, the thought of having a baby next year!

Ralphie0956 · 15/09/2008 15:09

Ells,

Had my other blood test today and unfortunately it's not going down so I'm going in tomorrow to have a drug which will hopefully cause the fetus to break down and miscarry (fingers crossed) I won't be able to try again for at least 5 months becuase of the drug.
However yours is different, they first told me that if I miscarried without help that I would only have to wait one period cycle before trying again, so maybe you should try that. by the time you have one cycle you body would have maybe had enough time to heal a bit.
Looks like I won't be able to try again any time soon but hopefully when I can, next time round will be plain sailing!!!

Ralphie

I am sorry to here that, I do hope you feel well soon, and everyting goes smoothly. Ive been on the Ectopic website which is full of useful information, it states on there that you normally have to wait 3 months if you have the injection and a little longer if you have a second dose, did they say where your ectopic was situated?

Im really confussed as when I went today the nurse didnt even have my notes, when I explained what had happened she said it would probably of been a misscarrige and not ectopic due to my levels going down so quickly, which really confussed me as they are very different. She didnt manage to get any blood so after 3 atempts she decided to do a pregnancy test instead which showed negative, so she said there was no need to check my levels, I just hope this is correct. I feel a little let down as I asked for a scan but she said they wouldnt do one as it isnt necessary, but how do they know everything inside is as it should be, and im totally clear?? TC xx

Ralphie0956 · 16/09/2008 20:12

Ells,

I have been on the website and I did mention this to the doctor but she said that 3 months is a minimum and that the only reason why you have to aviod getting pregnant within that time is because the drug is so powerful it can cause development problems with pregnancy and babies can have long lasting serious development issues, so she suggests 4/5 months to be safe.

I presume that they will only give you a scan if you continue to bleed. Normally I think I'm right in saying this, if you continue to bleed you have one of those DNC's which is some procedure that make's sure your completely cleaned out. If your not bleeding and your test showed negative then take it as a good sign wait one cycle and then try again xx

OP posts:
lucykate · 16/09/2008 20:20

ells, if you are testing negative, then that probably means its all over, tissue gets reabsorbed into the body. most pg tests these days detect a hormone level of between 25-40, so yours must now be below 25ish. if the nurse now suspects that yours was a m/c s opposed to an ectopic, then thats good, means your chances of a healthy next pg are good.

with my m/c's, i had a d&c first time round, and second time it sorted itself out, a year to the day after my second, i gave birth to ds. fingers crossed for both of you that in the future there will be good news, x.

ellsbellzie · 17/09/2008 19:25

Ralphie/Luckate Thanks for the advice I suppose I know what your saying is right, everything should just sort it self out and hopefully will be ok. I suppose im just so worried something is leftover and ill have to go through this again, all I can do is be positive and give it a try and hope for the best, I'm just so impatient at waiting, Really I should think myself lucky, there were ladies in the hospital who had been through this twice and unfortunately lost both tubes, I really felt for them.

Ralphie I hope you coping ok, have you had the injection, and how are you felling?

Ralphie0956 · 19/09/2008 11:49

Hi Ells,

Yeah had my injection on Tuesday and started to feel the effects yesterday. The injection itself wasn't to bad but it did sting.
Yesterday was the worst day so far as my stomach REALLY hurt, I felt like absolute crap!
Today I'm feeling slightly better and the pain is reduced although still tender.
I just hope after all this that it works, but won't find out until Monday blood results.
Hopefully I won't need surgery but know that what will be will be.
I'll take the next 6 months in my stride, get over the physical and emotional parts of this ectopic and hopefully be able to try again about Feb time.
Let's just hope that unlike the women you were in hospital with we don't suffer from this again x

I have had 3 mcs, 2 of them no bleeding just the scan picked up no heart beat. I have since had two sons which with both of them I bleed for about a week, same amount as a period around with lots of cramps about the six week mark. I was convinced I was losing them but shocked every time my blood results come back and my hcg was doubling. I continued then spotting more a less through the two pregancies. So you can never really tell. But I know its a horrible time not knowing. Thinking of you and sending you good vibes for your scan

ellsbellzie · 28/09/2008 12:53

Ralphie Hi how you doing, hope your doing ok, hope your felling better!!xx

newbishad · 03/10/2008 12:46

Hi there,

I've just read your thread and have experienced something similar to you Ralphie0956 so I thought I'd share my experiences.

I've had two ectopic pregnacies in the past. The second one was treated with metotrexate and it is a truly awful experience. I felt as though I was loosing the one thing I wanted most of all but you have to loose it to move on.

I just want to say that I waited about 5 months before starting IVF (I had a history of infertility and ectopics in both tubes). My treatment was sucessful and I now have a DD 4 months old. There were no repucusions from the drug and I had a very good responce with several frozen embryos

I wish both you and Ellsbellzie luck for the future.

Lots of love,

NS XXXX

Ralphie0956 · 15/10/2008 20:23

Newbishad,
Thanks for sharing, it's nice when others have gone through similar experiences.
I think I've been quite lucky as the treatment was all over within 2.5 weeks whereas I was told by Doctors that it normally takes up to 6 weeks to really work and take effect.
Don't mean to go into to much detail but I've also had my first period which again has happened only 4 weeks after treatment, so fingers crossed my bodies on the mend.
I must amit Methotrexate isn't the nicest of drugs, but when I hear and read stories of operations that some women have gone through I count myself lucky.

Ellsbelzie,
I'm doing really well actually as you can tell from the message above.
How about you? have you started trying yet?

OP posts:
ellsbellzie · 16/10/2008 21:27

Hi Ralphie

Im pleased everything is going ok! I haven't started trying yet im waiting for my period, should be any time now. I bled straight after I came out of hospital which was 5 weeks ago, and I no I ovulated a few weeks later as I checked with the test sticks just for reassurance really! So Im just waiting for it to come so I can get cracking, I really hope it doesn't take too long either as Ive got my heart set on having a baby next year, hopefully July August time, Im so impatient!! xx
