Feel totally debilitated. Do morning sickness drugs work?

I can't stand it anymore. I'm at the end of my tether, and I'm no wimp! I'm not even being sick, it's just constant nausea.

I have decided to go to the doctor on Monday for some anti-sickness drugs. Will she prescribe them at all or just tell me to get over it? Are there any you can recommend? Are they safe?

I have had this twice before, but not this bad. I suppose looking after a 2 1/2 yr old and a 11 mth old just makes things worse.

My GP gave me Avomine, promethazine teoclate, (originally a travel sickness drug) earlier this year as I was only able to 'eat' ice cubes and losing weight. They work but made me sleepy so I took them at 7ish in the evening so I could eat a decent evening meal and was ok for breakfast. Was able to pick food in the day as long as I took it easy, think there was just enough of the drug in my system to keep it down.

he said that as far as he knew the drug was mainly prescribed for morning sickness these days and had been used for years.

Morning sickness is truly crap isn't it. Hope your GP can help.

Yes, it is truly crap. I keep saying to myself it will go in 5 weeks, then I think 5 WEEKS? NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I went to a homeopath when i had a lot of nausea and sickness with DD2.
Best thing i ever did!
These are what the tablets i had were called.
They made a massive difference and i wish i had known about them before.

i had it with DS - you dissolve it in your mouth, and it gives you a 2-3 hour window in which you can eat/drink/work/do housework
it may be, though, that because you're not actually being sick, your GP will be reluctant to prescribe it

I had horrendous morning sickness - I took OTC motion sickness pills for a month, then got put on metoclopramide (for 6 weeks), then when I still lost 12lb in 2 weeks I got the bad boy of anti-nausea meds, Zofran.

Which was fantastic and I had my first non-vomiting day in 3 months. STill couldn't eat anything other than oatmeal or plain boiled rice, but that was an improvement on throwing up every time I lifted my head from the pillow.

I know docs don't like prescribing drugs for morning sickness unless they really have to (after all thalidomide was developed as a morning sickness treatment), as the drugs aren't specifically tested for safety on pregnant women for ethical reasons.

From experience, DS came out with no obvious issues - he's only 10 months so fingers crossed he continues in fine health.

There are drugs that are safe in pg for the treatment of severe morning sickness..but..

most of the anti-emetics prescribed just make you able to eat if you are being uncontrolably sick, they don't really do anyting for the nausea.

They are not usually given for nausea alone, I'm afraid. But it's still worth talking to your GP,she may be able to recommend something.

misstfied just realised that you weren't actually being sick. You still might be able to get something though. Travel sickness medicine must also be able to help nausea.

Good point PinkyMinky - I felt sick for my entire pregnancy, even when I'd stopped actually being ill constantly.

The motion sickness pills should help with the nausea feeling, whereas the hardcore prescribe pills relax your digestive tract muscles so you are less likely to throw up.

I had Domperidone and it helped a lot. Nothing worse than that constant low-level motion sickness feeling!

I thought I may not get prescribed anything if I am not being sick. If they can't do anything for the nausea, then it may not be worth going to the GP.

I think most of the anti sickness drugs just take away the sickness not the nausea sorry and are pretty hard to get even if you are being sick Im afraid.

Have you tried reflexology? That helped me as well as homeopathy

Went to an acupuncturist today, and I think I will have to have more sessions if it is going to work, although it's so expensive.

Mine helped with the nausea too. Travel sickness wrist bands help some people but not me.

I had various antiemetics, but what really helped was going on mat leave! No other kids to look after though which helped I imagine. But the tablets helped to take the edge off it all so that I could eat at least something regularly, which in turn helped to keep the nausea at bay.

My friend had hyperemisis and she was given anti sickness drugs cos she literally couldn't keep anything down, was dehydrated and lost a lot of weight. As far as I know, it's not something they give lightly. I wasn't far off hyperemisis with my last two pregnancies and just had to suffer. This pregnancy, I'm not as bad, but still chucking 2-3 times a day. I get worse as the day goes on and really sink from 4pm. In fact I feel one coming on now...I would try the homeopathic route, I will, as soon as I feel I'm able to make the journey! You are not alone! Feel better!

I had hyperemisis. All that worked was intramuscular stemitil jabs in my thigh, and I think primarily because the jabs knocked me out for a couple hours.

Wish I had been out of hospital long enough to investigate homeopathy, reflexology etc. I found that ice cubes helped me get some fluids, then I graduated onto ice lollies to get some calories too.

I started with MS at 5 weeks, I asked my GP for some medication and she said she would rather not give me anything. I ended up going into hospital as I was being sick up to 15 times a day somedays. They gave me Cyclizine, this stopped me being sick but I still felt it all day every day.

I don't think they can give you anything if you're just feeling sick. I tried accupunture too which seemed to ease it for a slight period but i think to get any real effect you have to have it done alot and I couldn't afford it.

My sickness eased slightly at 8 weeks and then eased some more at 10 weeks. So you won't feel 'this bad' for a long time it will ease week by week.

I found cyclizine not bad for the nausea. The other drugs - zofran etc, just stopped the vomiting. Worth a try, though, surely, to stop you feeling so very terrible?

Your liver might be having trouble coping with the extra blood and hormones it has to break down. My midwife told me to try milk thistle as it assists the liver to destress. Be sure to look into this on your own, don't just take my word for it. Other liver helps include lemon juice (pref fresh) and water if you're iffy about the milk thistle.

I was given stymitol when I had hyperemesis. Didn't really find that it helped much, I carried on throwing up almost constantly. Was about 4 months on before I could begin to function again!
