Did you get stretch marks? Because I have a theory

that it's partly dependent on your skin type

me: no stretch marks with DS (put on nearly 3 stone)
my MIL (no relation): no stretch marks with 3 big babies ( 9/10lb +) and she's pretty small

we do have similar skin tone/type, so could it be related? If you didn't get any stretch marks, what type of skin do you have (will reveal mine after survey in true scientific fashion)

I have sallow/ olive skin - got a load of stretch marks on hips and thighs after growth spurt mid teens. I have bad ones now over tummy from first pg. Just as they were beginning to fade, 2nd pg brought em back to life

no pregnancy stretch marks, a couple from adolescence on my hips [ie when i finally got hips!]

i am white with fair-medium skin tone and oily skin. i can't help but feel the oily skin thing helps although it didn't feel that great when younger....

am indian - got loads of stretch marks from around 38 weeks onwards (though was enormous!). Skin is slightly oily on upper body but dry on lower body...

Didnt get any with DS last time (and none so far this time at 34 weeks - touching a lot of wood!). I have pale freckly skin which burns easily and is greasy ish.

I do have silver ones on my hips from puberty - cant remember them ever being red though. I also had some slighlty reddish ones on my boobs from breastfeeding - went from B to E cup but they seem to have gone (peering down my bra in work lol)

I also had hyperemesis through both pregnancies and put on about half a stone (last time and i reckon the same this time). DS was 7.5 pounds - this baby seems a little smaller.

My mum (one pregnancy) didnt get any stretch marks.

Not sure yet- only 29 weeks with first, no stretch marks yet - but I feel like my skin is stretched to it's MAX. I'm fair skinned and have veins showing up like crazy on sides of bump and top of breasts... it's very, very weird looking. Not oily/not dry skin. Am curious about your findings... I use cocoa butter/shea butter palmers cream twice per day because I'm so worried about stretch marks.

I don't have stretch marks but I do have a very wrinkly tum!

I'm small with dry, olive/light brown skin - and had 2 small babies!

I never got stretch marks. Am white but slightly darker in skin, sort of tans well, but is generally dry.

I got a very few stretch marks when pg(had some from teenage years) on my inner thigh and a bit on hips - faded now. None on my tummy though and I was huuuuuuugggggeee when pg. (I am tall, had good sized 9lb baby, but have long legs and quite short torso - so I stuck out a mile!)

Skin tone, medium - not olive, but not pale - tan easily.

It is good to know I am aiding important scientific research.

Got loads on hips and boobs in puberty. Got one "Harry Potter" lightning flash on my tummy (made everyone laugh when they saw it) with DD1 and had polyhydramnios. Looked like Mr Greedy, I was so huge. None with DD2 apart from resurgence of HP mark. Slightly smaller as had CS at 39 weeks rather than 42.

This time - none so far at 21 w. Am fair, dry skin, but tan well.

My sister - a much slimmer bean than me at all times. Put on about 1 1.2 st in her pg and was riddled with them. She's very dark olive skinned, much greasier than mine (and hence ageing much better than me, the cow!)

Never had stretch marks (now on 3rd pregnancy). First two babies nearly 9lb when born so I don't have small ones! My sister did though.

I read something science based which said that the only conclusions that they had been able to draw about stretch marks were:

a. the more weight you put on, the more likely.

b. If you put weight on really rapidly, they are more likely.

c. Younger mothers are more likely to get them than older ones.

There will obviously be loads of people who don't conform to this...however I put on 2 stone with dd, fairly steadily over the course of the pregnancy, and was 34 when I had her = no stretch marks!

No pregnancy stretch marks, am on my 3rd pg. Though I do have some on hips from adolescence. My skin is sallow/olive. My mum got loads from 2 smallish sized dc - she is very pale skinned.

Mine is quite sallow, well I go creamy and then brown, am usually quite pale - mousey hair, blue eyes. I always used to tan more than my sister though.
I had no stretchmarks at all with ds1, but only put on a small amount of weight (about a stone and a half maybe?) then with ds2 I got a couple of stretchmarks right on my bellybutton, right at the end of the pregnancy - well I think that's what they were - it was all reddy and mottled anyway. It looked a bit sort of quilted when he was born, then since the skin has shrunk, can't see anything.
Oh well.

I put on about 2 or 2.5 stone that time btw.

Mind you I have a few on my calves from when I was about 14

I also have very oily skin. My sister had a lot of stretchmarks from teenage onwards really, she is much drier and paler.

I got a few stretch marks just above my bikini line, right at the end of my pregnancy with DS1. They don't show much now, and can be covered with big knickers!
Didn't get any extra ones with DS2, and didn't really bother much with creams like I did during my first pregnancy.

I have pretty dark skin. My mum has paler skin & only got a few stretch marks on her thighs.

Notyummy, maybe the age thing is something to do with it, I had DD1 at 38...

Mum - pale Celtic skin that tends to dryness, no stretchmarks after 3 pregnancies including twins

Me - similar skin though probably dryer, 2 pgs, put on 2.5-3 stone each time and no stretchmarks (yippee)

Mum looks WAY younger than her 70 years so I'm hoping that is inherited too

Report
feetheart · 28/07/2008 11:33

Interesting about age - Mum was 25, 27 and 39 during her pg, I was 40 and 43!

My mum and I don't have stretch marks.

My skin has loads of stretchmarks, on my legs form growth spurts during puberty. I didn't put much weight on at all when I was pregnant, then a load of stretchmarks appeared at about 37 weeks.

Also got stretchmarks on my breasts from milk engorgement, that all appeared over two days.

I've got dry skin.

I'm like squeakypop. Got terrible stretchmarks on my hips from adolescent growth spurt and was expecting a load more when I got pregnant. But didn't get any. I have no idea why.

2 smallish marks with DS. None so far with this preg. I have pale does not tan easily skin. My sis same skin type as me got loads her tummy sadly looks like a road map. We think it just depends on how well you look after your skin she didnt moisturise atall with her LO's I obsess and put bio oil everywhere!

Report
belgo · 28/07/2008 11:53

Forgot to add, I got stretchmarks despite using oils and creams- about three different sorts -all of them, all at once!, twice a day during my first pregnancy.
