7 weeks pregnant, started bleeding yesterday (bright red moderately heavy) along with cramps. Got a bit worse over night and this morning. Called the EPU at Oldham hospital. She told me to wait till 11 Feb and take a pregnancy test and if it's negative then I've miscarried?! I told her I wanted a scan and she said no. She said I could be seen by a doctor who would check my cervix, but I need to be referred first either by my GP or A&E. Or she said I could get a private scan. I'm stunned! I told her I had similar bleeding with my first child at 8 weeks and I was invited in for a scan. But she said they don't do that.... Has anyone else had this experience with an EPU? We've booked a private scan for this afternoon as we would rather just know, but I'm appalled at the lack of care I received today from the NHS.

I recently had a miscarriage, both Stepping Hill & Wythenshaw take self referrals if you can get to either of those.

Fingers crossed for you

Thanks again everyone. I sadly lost the baby. Feeling very sad but glad I went for the scan and then went to A&E as I'd rather know.

Callback and speak with someone else . That’s ridiculous!

BeeHive909 · 22/01/2026 02:33

I’m so sorry. Please make a complaint about the staff member you spoke too. It may not have changed the outcome but they shouldn’t have spoken to you like that.

I’m sorry to hear you lost the baby OP.

I'm sorry you lost the baby and glad you are good in your choice of actions. I have miscarried myself (having had scans and not). A lot of women on here will have experience of this, but it doesn't seem to be talked about much. (I understand why, I guess)

But please take care of yourself and your future family whenever it happens. It's a hard thing to go through right now.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Having recently been through this I know how painful it can be. Big hugs

I'm so sorry OP. Hope you are ok.

I have had several miscarriages and similar experience with trying to get a scan after early bleeding. I was a fertility clinic patient so I was sometimes given one but other times I had a similar response - that there was no point scanning because if I was miscarrying it would not make any difference to the outcome. But for me the issue was my mental health and being sick with worry because I didn't know the situation.

I felt I desperately needed to know if I was viably pregnant, technically pregnant but miscarriage inevitable or no longer pregnant, so that I could adjust and cope with it. I completely get that NHS lacks resources and can't scan everyone on request but the limbo actually felt like torture. So really feeling for you x
