How accruate are growth scans?

dd2 was 9lb and arrived at 39weeks. i am having growth scans with this baby as am borderline diabetic (gestinal) and atm is under control, but with dd2 i never measured big or anything, so she was a shock at 9lb, considering dd1 was 6lb 15oz at full term.

can i asked to be induced? would they let me be induced? am scared of big baby again.

yep, spoke to DH about it and he said fine!!

sparklymieow · 24/01/2005 22:37

and your DDs have been born in the day, noot like mine that were all born in the middle of night

misdee · 24/01/2005 22:38

well maybe. depends if i remember to call you. in the midst of everything u may not get time if its quick as dd2 lol.

anyway, getting back to induction, what should i ask about and say?

they were pretty spot on with me - scanned at about 36 weeks to check growth as I was hoping for a VBAC but baby looked big. At 36 weeks they said she would be 4kgs ( about 9lb) at term. She was born by c-section 10 days late and was 9lb 7 oz or 4.28 kg.

sparklymieow · 24/01/2005 22:39

I live over the road from the hospital..... remember!!!??

pupuce · 24/01/2005 22:40

7 doses of prostin in 6 days.... IMO - BAD practice and management... she was past 42 weeks and she ended in section

misdee · 24/01/2005 22:40

gawd pupuce that sounds awful. please tell me that rarely happens.

misdee, when is your next growth scan booked for?

misdee · 24/01/2005 22:42

next week. had oner last week, estimate was at around 4lb.

Well I certainly hope so and I do think it is not common. The hospital was just too busy and they just didn't really look after her.... It was driving me mad !!!
However 2 days of inductions is not un-common.

misdee · 24/01/2005 22:47

i was set up with a drip with dd1, and even tho i was there at 7am ,the drip wasnt started till after 1pm and i delivered dd1 at about 9pm (i'm useless for remember times). but i hated my midwife that time, she didnt listen to me, or my mum, or my dh. we kept telling her that the machine wasnt monitoring contractions (i was having contractions and the machine was at 0%!!) and when i was ready tp push she told me i couldnt be as she'd examined me 1hr before and wasnt anywhere near.

with dd2 i dilated 4cm in an hour. (was at 6cm when arrived, had her just over an hour later)

I think you need to keep an open mind re: induction. I was induced for DS2 and had no problems, quite often the prostin gel can be enough to kick start things but without syntocin it can take time. Mears has talked recently on another thread about an overdue lady who was induced with prostin gel only and had the water birth she'd wanted - I think you need to wait and see how the growth scans go, but the estimated weight is just that, an estimate. I agree with pupuce that if you've delivered a 9lb baby before then you can do it again - but I can understand your concerns!

misdee · 25/01/2005 07:14

how early would they induce?

OP posts:
bubble99 · 25/01/2005 09:19

well, prior to 37 weeks is considered prem. but it depends on your consultant and local policy. Discuss this with your MW consultant at your next visit but unless you're truly cooking a giant baby I'm not sure they'll agree to induce until you're overdue.

pupuce · 25/01/2005 09:32

Date of early induction would depend on many factors like reason for it (health/size of baby), policy of hospital, view of OB in your situation....

How many weeks are you now?

misdee · 25/01/2005 09:34

34+4.

dh is fine about asking to be induced.

misdee · 25/01/2005 09:38

tbh i am hoping to go into spontaous labout at about 38weeks ish. dd2 was 1 weeks early. just dont want to go overdue and with dh being ill i want to know whats going on. it'll be my luck i go into labour on a day he is at hospital himself.

OP posts:
misdee · 26/01/2005 16:33

got another scan next week. consultants said they may induce me at around 38weeks, as dd2 was born at 39 weeks and weighed 9lb, and they really want to avoid another big un.

i don't know about GD, misdee, but with pre-existing diabetes they always induce before you're full term. i was induced at 39 weeks with ds, & with this one, they're muttering about 37 weeks (different hospital). and ds wasn't big at all - 7lbs10. it's to do with the way the placenta can start to deteriorate when you have diabetes. so they will probably be sympathetic if you ask for an induction.

misdee · 26/01/2005 18:26

its on the cards for discussion next week after growth scan. there is a bit of concerm as the bi-parietal diameter (no idea what that is tbh) hasnt increased much. it has crossed below the line whereas the others have remained steady-ish.
