I just want to make an annoucement about some of the things I have done in pregnancy so far.

  • eaten Sushi about once a fortnight
  • drank 1 - 2 glasses of wine a week
  • worked long hours
  • taken 2 long haul flights in the first trimester.
  • eaten prawns in restaurants many times
  • eaten prawns at home even more times.
  • eaten soft cheese

I am saying this because I think people can get too het up about the dos and don'ts and I thought I'd put it out there that I am continuing life as though I wasn't pregnant. Does this make me a bad mother!?!

Vitamin A is not the menace people think it is. The link between Vitamin A and birth defects is far from proved and it is almost impossible to eat enough to cause even theoretical damage. Look here for more info (very recent study).
A much bigger risk is not enough vit A

pate has max 1000IUs vitamin A per ounce, a tenth of the lowest dose ever to show even a tenuous link with birth defects. Canned pate is completely sterile.

WOW! MsDemeanor - you certainly back up your points with facts!

OH MY GOD!!!

lets put it this way she posted the thread for her own reasons...ppl lets remember its her BABY and if she wants to be this way thats upto her!!

i think this thread was a waste of time,i doubt she ment to have ppl critisize her and her pregnancy

we all at some stage may have done a thing or 2 we shouldnt have lets face it we cant wrap ourselves in cotton wool just because we are pregnant, there is so much diffrent foods now that we cant apparently eat but yet im sure ya mums will say we never new that while i was pregnant with you!! so why the sudden change?

being pregnant is so over rated these days!!

live how you want but i wish to believe that we must do whats best for the sake of our unborn babys due to thats whats important!!

im 23 and had my first child at 16 she is now 7,i done everything right down to giving up smoking!! theres no excuse, now im 5weeks away from having my 2nd and have done right by this pregnancy,im not here to judge we can all agree to disagree

goodluck to the up coming mums and mums already

Hmmmm, touchy thread!
I understand why the OP started the thread and i understand why some are offended / angered by it but it is each to their own!!!
You know you have more chance of catching listeria from an unwashed apple than soft cheese?????
Im not a stiffler for the rules but luckily i dont like prawns, soft cheese, nuts etc!!!

MerryMarigold · 11/06/2008 22:33

Prawns, soft cheese and nuts - sounds like most of my diet!!!

MsDemeanor · 12/06/2008 18:04

I feel a bit sad sometimes that pregnant women go through pregnancy in a complete state of anxiety about everything they eat or drink, even though they are eating a perfectly fine diet and not doing anything wrong.
So many people are judgemental or scared when they are actually are completely mistaken about both the potential for risk and likelihood of risk.

staranise · 12/06/2008 18:16

Japanese people eat sushi because it is pre-frozen (as is most sushi sold in restaurants) so therefore it is fine. And in France and Spain etc they are a lot more paranoid about toxoplasmosis than here, and tell you to avoid all unwashed salad, cured meats etc.

Saying that, I like to think that we're all reasonably intelligent adults and can judge the risks of the occasional glass of wine or rare steak. I have eaten/drank at some point in my four pregnancies (including one mc)everything you're not meant to (bar class A drugs...).

Agree that it is rather odd to revel in however, re. OP.
