Hi All

i have a 6 week scan scheduled for friday. i read that sometimes the heartbeat cant be seen this early. i am having a transvaginal scan - where they put the probe into the vagina. so they can see really early pregnancies.

has anyone had this done at 6 weeks? were they able to see the heartbeat?

i am having this done this early because i only have one tube and cannot risk an ectopic.

thanks

hi

worrying time i know - wishing you luck

i had early scans with both dsses as my first pregnancy was ectopic

iirc i was pretty much spot on 6 weeks with both and saw a heartbeat. but with ds2 was scanned by the nhs the same day and they failed to see anything. much depends on the skill of the sonographer and the equipemtn they're using, so try not to read too much intoi t if they are unabvle to find the heartbeat - they'll rescan you in a week or so

I had one at 6+2 with DS and saw a heartbeat. But it's still early enough that you shouldn't worry if they can't find one yet.

thanks for you replies! i feel better now.

According to one site I came across, the heart begins to beat at 25 days post conception. For a cycle with ovulation at day 14, that would be 5w+4. So if your cycle is fairly "normal", then they should be able to see a heart beat.

belgo · 02/06/2008 09:04

You may be able to see a heartbeat, but it is still very early.

The most important thing though is to confirm the position of the embryo.

If you don't see a heartbeat, they may ask you to go back again in a week or two.

Good luck.

ohjoy · 02/06/2008 09:15

you're right belgo, that is my biggest concern - i want to make sure the position is right.

Thanks!

Nonickname, my cycle is a normal 28 day cycle. so i hope they can see the heartbeat!

Let us know friday how it goes. And if you can't see a heartbeat, try not to worry, as even with a regular cycle, you may be slightly less then 6 weeks pregnant.

hi belgo, i will certainly post!

I had one at 7 and a half weeks and the bh couldn't be seen until a seocnd one a week later. Even if they can't see the hb they should be able to see the position of the sac. Although in my case also the sac appeared to be to one side and they were concerned it was ectopic as they said it should have been in the middle of the uterus. It wasn't ectopic and all was well. So, don't panic if the first scan isn't totally reassuring!

I too had an ectopic and have just one tube left so with my last pregnancy I had 3 early scans. At the first - about 6 weeks according to LMP they could see the sac but no heart beat, at the second, the consultant told me it was a failed pg and to wait to miscarry. A week later when nothing had happened, I went back and had another scan and there was the heart beating away! I now have v healthy one year old boy! Now pg again and recently had 2 early scans - on the first (6 weeks), sac but no heartbeat but at the second heartbeat. Phew. My cycle is long but I do think it really does vary for everyone. As long as it's in the right place that's the main thing. Good luck

I'm new to all this and not sure i'm in the right bit, but i had a miscarriage in Jan at 6 weeks and am now 5 and half wks pregnant, i'm very anxious and scared and it seems like forever waiting for a scan. what are my chances of this one being ok??

no bleeding this time, but some lower tummy aches for the past wk.

Heron23 · 03/06/2008 18:19

hi hopeful, i think lower tummy aches can also mean stretching of the uterus and all the other bits and pieces. it does not have to mean an impending m/c. i know it is a worry, i am forever looking for bad signs

sounds like you had bleeding last time. it is good that you are not bleeding this time. having said that, not all bleeding is bad!

when is your scan scheduled for?

star6 · 03/06/2008 18:36

I had an early miscarriage at end of January (not even 5 weeks) then conceived on the next cycle... didn't mean to conceive either time, but now we're super excited!!

star6 · 03/06/2008 18:37

oh and early scan - and I don't think that's too early... transvaginal scan is a bit uncomfortable, though. Take dh or someone with you to be in the room with you.

Heron23 · 03/06/2008 19:29

hi star, sorry about your m/c but happy your pregnant again! how many weeks are you now?

yes, i am having a transvaginal, and DH will be with me

babylove123 · 04/06/2008 12:12

Hi,

I had cramps so i got sent for a 7 week scan, had to have a transvaginal one too because the ultrasound couldnt pick much up. Was uncomfortable but i've had one before when i had to go into hospital for a poly cystic ovary test.

I ended up having to go back at 8 weeks because they said they could see the baby sac but just a "load of goo" inside of it. They put me at 6 weeks 3 days. Was quite distressed because i had hoped they'd see the baby, i knew the heartbeat wouldnt be seen yet but i expected something better than "goo"!

The 8 week scan was much better, baby was visible and so was the heartbeat, was so cute!

Hope it goes/went well!

heron22 · 04/06/2008 13:00

hi baby, bless, it is so special to see your baby isnt it?

babylove123 · 05/06/2008 09:41

Yeh it is, he/she was only 1.9cm @ 8 weeks. I scanned the pics onto the PC to send to family and told them they had to zoom in like 50 times!!!!!

My 12 week scan one was much better, baby was 4.72cm and all legs like its daddy!!!!! Cant believe how long those legs were.....there are gonna be some painful kicks soon!!!

tracyg1983 · 01/07/2018 14:46

Hi there.
Hoping someone can give me advice.

I went for what I thought was a 6 week ultrasound to be told I was only 5 weeks! They re-scanned me today at what I thought would be 7 weeks. Yolk sac and gestational sac present, along with fetal pole. However
No heart beat and only measuring at 6+1. Feeling gutted as it’s looking like no growth since 6 weeks!

My last pregnancy ended in miscarriage so i just hoped this one was going to go better. I will probably get scanned in another week to see if definitely no heart beat. Also very confused why I’ve not started bleeding if pregnancy non viable!

Any thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
