I think of River Phoenix too.
His Parents changed their surname to Phoenix.
I don’t think it sounds posh, but I think it’s a lot to live up to. Totally fine if he is quite a unique type of person with an individual style and quite arty and good looking. Seems ridiculous if he has a shaved head and wears a tracksuit.

There are a fair few Rivers. I do supply teaching so I encounter loads of names and River is not completely unusual. Obviously it’s no Ava/Eva/Isla/Ella but it’s definitely a name that is popular enough not to be noticed.

ItsameLuigi · 09/08/2025 13:40

If you like it choose it. When I was pregnant with my now 7 year old, I chose a name and 90% of my family weren't impressed. Now, no one could imagine him being anything else. It isn't even a far out name imo, it's Wyatt lol. But it suits him so well. Maybe pick a few names that you really love, when you meet baby you'll know which one fits them best.

LER2023 · 09/08/2025 13:56

I think its a lovely name, it is becoming popular though in this day and age.

You're going to get eye rolls wherever you go and say their name.

My nephews are called Albert and Gary, as you can imagine there was a lot of eye rolls but it suits them both.

My sons name got a few eye rolls from my mum and MIL, and was asked if i would change his name but ive stuck to my guns theyve gotten used to it.. hes not even here yet and theyre already saying we're excited for baby .

Just go with what you love, people will get used to it soon!

FlutteryButterfly · 09/08/2025 14:57

I've come across a few over the years both boy and girl. It's not my taste but its also not silly. It only becomes a bit hippyish if it doesn't sit well with your surname and/or is paired with siblings Ocean and Atlanta.

mambojambodothetango · 09/08/2025 15:59

Why only for a boy?? I think it's nice for both sexes. I like natural names like Rowan and Robin that are unisex and would include River in that list.

CharlotteRae · 09/08/2025 19:10

What about for the middle name

AntisocialMedium · 09/08/2025 20:10

Rocket?

junkmaail · 09/08/2025 20:21

I think of Rivers Cuomo from Weezer rather than River Phoenix. It’s a nice name. Quite popular now I think so won’t feel out of place.

ThatGreenFawn · 09/08/2025 21:38

It's quite popular at the moment, I know 3 children called River who are under 6.

Glitchymn1 · 09/08/2025 21:42

Reeva - if a girl.
I don’t like River (Phoenix) however, peers probably don’t link it with death.

pokewoman · 10/08/2025 13:04

I have definitely heard worse names. I've also heard much better.

I don't think it's so out there and whacky that it would effect job opportunities in the future. Its not posh though.

FullOfMomsense · 11/08/2025 15:28

River is a very common name now- I'm afraid you've done what many people have done and thought "This is a kooky name and no one else will think of it".

Imperfectpolly · 11/08/2025 15:40

I like it for both boy and girl.
There are no children called River that I know of.

Namechange2567 · 11/08/2025 15:47

I know 4 little rivers so I wouldn’t say it’s unusual

TheDisillusionedAnarchist · 11/08/2025 16:12

I know twins called River and Ocean. It’s a perfectly okay name goes along with names like Blue, Sage, Rainbow that kind of thing

dizzydizzydizzy · 11/08/2025 16:16

I know a young woman called River.

I don't particularly like it because I prefer traditional names like Matthew and Elizabeth. But it doesn't matter what I think. OP, if you love it, go for it.

PurpleChrayn · 11/08/2025 17:40

I don’t think you’re in danger of anyone thinking you’re posh…

I've taught at least one River, I don't think it's silly and a nice name. A little bit crunchy but not ridiculous.

bugalugs45 · 11/08/2025 18:12

my Neighbours son is called Rio which is Spanish for river if you wanted something similar

Needmorelego · 11/08/2025 18:18

I like the name River.
It's become more popular in recent years so people won't really think it's unusual or "out there".
Seems to becoming more popular for girls.
I think it's a lovely name and is fine for boy or a girl.
