Hypnobirthing - anyone tried it?

Currently pregnant with first baby. Wondering whether to try hyonobirthing. There’s someone near me who offers KG Hypnobirthing, over 5 sessions.

Has anyone found this helpful? Thanks

Wow, thanks for all the great responses. Lots of positives, which are good to hear.
I appreciate it doesn’t work for everyone, and there’s a lot of elements of birth that don’t go to plan, however I’m thinking if I’m feeling relaxed and confident beforehand then I’ll hopefully be more able to adapt and accept what doesn’t go to plan!

Thanks also for the Instagram and book recommendations, will def have a look.

I did a cheap online course and I recommend it. The breathing techniques really helped me, I had a very long labour with my third with starts and stops and was in control all the time, managed pain really well and even had dinner an hour before my last baby was born (had home birth). The course also included affirmations and some relaxing music - massive cringe for me! The moment I went into labour I couldn’t stand that 💩, but that’s just me, I listened to Aphex Twin instead (no idea why, just felt like it).

Not for me. When the pain kicks in it all goes out the window

Definitely recommend it, it made me (& husband) feel very positive about the births and look forward to rather than worry about. I failed water births both times but still very positive experiences, I felt in control and midwives understood and respected me. First time I had gas & air towards the end, second time there was no time for anything! I'm not saying I felt no pain but I did feel I could manage it.

I had a hypnobirthing online course included with my antenatal classes - I found the breathing exercises and visualisations helpful early on when I was managing things at home, but once I got into hospital and the contractions ramped up it all basically went out of the window. I didn't get into any of the positive affirmation stuff, that's just not for me.

I would definitely recommend it, but equally I do regret not having epidurals.
We had a lot of information rammed down our throat at the time 20 years ago that there was evidence Epidurals led to longer labourers which I believe has now been discredited
The truth is, you can give birth without drugs
But why should you?

WhatMe123 · 17/07/2025 12:29

I loved it but I'm a science geek so for me I found it more useful as I knew what my body was doing and why and I wasn't scared. Doesn't make it hurt less etc. I think if you use hypno birthing you still need to go with the flow and your birth plan is still a preference as with births are u predictable and no one can assume how it will be. Don't feel bad if you still need intervention/drugs etc but it's really worth it for the I for stops alone I'd say

For the information alone

Made a huge, positive difference to my second birth. Please do it, I would recommend it to anyone. Gives you some sense of power over your experience.

This. I kind of read up about it during my first pregnancy but didn't practice or listen to anything more. Second time around I did the Positive Birth Company's online course as it was during COVID so no in person courses around. I practiced regularly with DH.and listened to the positive affirmations and it made such a huge difference to my labour. I managed at home without any pain relief, arriving at.hospital at 10cm and just had gas and air to push. Currently 36 weeks with my.third and I have repeated the PBC course and been practicing again so.hopeful it will help again
