Time off work due to lack of sleep

I feel really silly having time off work due to lack of sleep and I feel like this isn't really a good enough reason.
I am currently 20 weeks pregnant, I had the worst night last night, hardly any sleep at all, after an awful first trimester I am now suffering with really bad acid reflux which seems to happen late at night/ early hours, due to this I am getting broken sleep and last night was bad! Was up at 1:30am, couldn't get back to sleep for about 2 hours and now up again at 6am. I feel exhausted and I just want to stay in bed and sleep 😩
Would calling in sick today for the above be seen as not a good enough excuse? Just seems bad not going in due to being tired.

try giving up gluten, my midwife suggested this and it stopped my acid reflux completely.

turns out I’m gluten sensitive, rather then celiac

Take care of yourself. Stay home. If you're throwing up from acid reflux in the middle of the night, you should get whatever rest you need.

To those saying to "woman up" - why? Being pregnant is hard, and your body and instincts are wired to prioritize all energy to the growing fetus first. I don't understand the need to make pregnant women feel like they should be able to overcome everything they normally can, just because "pregnancy is not an illness." Take care of yourself.

@WonderingWanda how patronising

Yes take the time off. I'm sure have made a decision already!

I've had a very similar night OP. I'm 18 weeks and it's been happening since about six weeks. The pharmacist prescribed me a massive bottle of gaviscon. It goes everywhere with me and sits by my bed overnight. It's especially bad when my stomach is empty and makes me feel faint and light headed as well as gagging and coughing so the mornings are awful. I'm learning how to manage it a bit better though - I get up before I need to and make a small bowl of cereal that I take back to bed and eat, then give myself time to come round a bit before moving to get ready. If I don't eat right away, the reflux is so bad it's difficult to come back from the rest of the day. I can work from home so haven't been in the office for weeks and often take a lunchtime nap.

I had severe reflux all day if I ate anything of note from 17 weeks till I gave birth. I’d sit up and it would be projectile. I ended up either barely eating or knowing what I was in for and dealing with it if I went out to eat. I was taking omeprazole, rennie and gaviscon

It would keep me awake as I couldn’t get comfortable. I didn’t call in sick a lot (I’m self employed so a bit tricky) but I did cancel clients on a couple of really bad occasions

@Motherof1and2dogs seconding the omeprazole. I vomited all the way to the end of my third pregnancy from heartburn and otc stuff made no difference.
I read about omeprazole on here early on in my 4th pregnancy and had it prescribed in both that and my 5th. It made a huge difference.

It really is good enough ... you need to be off work!

Heidi2018 · 24/02/2025 18:25

I've got bad news for you op....this lack of sleep is nothing compared to what's to come.

I'd rank it 1. Pregnancy tiredness 2. Hangover tiredness 3. Motherhood tiredness. Also this comment is the least helpful thing I've read and I absolutely HATED when people said this shite to me when pregnant! @WonderingWanda

Allswellthatendswelll · 24/02/2025 18:48

Omprezole really helped me!
Pregnancy tiredness is worse than new parent tiredness IMO (although I'm afraid the worst is Pregnancy with a toddler already 😫)
