16 week NHS scan - finding out sex

I am consultant led because of previous losses, so will have a NHS 16 week scan (which I appreciate is not the norm, and is obviously not a ‘gender scan’). For others who have had this - did you have the option of finding out baby’s sex? Or did you need to wait until 20 weeks?

I asked at the 12 week scan and she guessed (correctly!)

Pyjamasnibananas · 20/01/2025 11:35

Our 16 week scan (also consultant led) was done at 17 weeks and we were asked if we’d like to know the gender. I think the private places offer gender scans from 16 weeks too, so definitely worth asking!

We also found out at a 16 week NHS scan for my last two pregnancies, so I’d assume you’d be able to as well xx

Dalmatian0 · 20/01/2025 12:11

Thanks very much all! Exciting x

Yes I found out at 16 week NHS scan, I just asked the sonographer if she could tell. She wasn’t 100% sure as baby was in an awkward position but I got it confirmed a few months ago by 20 week scan.

Blue2020 · 20/01/2025 18:19

Not me but my friend had twins and she had fortnightly scans from 16 weeks with nhs. At that 16 week scan she found out the sexes then.

malimoon · 20/01/2025 18:40

We found out at 16 week NHS scan, he was pretty sure I think or wouldn't have told us (and he was right)

SallyWD · 20/01/2025 18:46

Yes. I went for a 12 week scan and it turned out we got the dates wrong and I was actually 16 weeks. They could see I was having a boy.

Dalmatian0 · 20/01/2025 22:18

Wow how exciting. Thanks everyone, really useful to know x

My 12 week scan was late as I had covid. So was 15 weeks and they told me the gender. Sonographer said she could t write it down but could tell us. Tbh it was blatantly obvious once she got to the area....he was a boyđŸ¤£

Who cares. You're there because your baby is high risk.

I hate how people only think about the sex at second scans.

The 20 week scan is not a gender scan either.

Oh bore off. Stop sucking the excitement out of someone else’s journey. If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all! Nobody asked you for opinion did they? Miserable person.

Excuse me?!

Did you see that I mentioned my previous losses above? My two daughters’ deaths were both diagnosed at routine scans. Nobody fears scans like I do. This is me trying to build in some positive rather than negative anticipation (which, from my OP, I would have thought was obvious).

What an unpleasant and unthoughtful post.

OP i was told the wrong sex 2x at 16/17 week private scans- I had two scans to confirm and they were both wrong! The 20 week scan was accurate!

Fwiw the private scan was completed by a very experienced sonographer who also worked in NHS so think it was just one of those things

Oh wow that’s good to know! Glad that at least your 20 week was accurate!

It doesn't happen often but I would probably wait a few more weeks or find out but ask to confirm at 20 weeks before you tell people!

Kingofthetyrantlizards · 21/01/2025 09:15

I had a scan with a consultant at 17w, we asked, and she told us what she thought she could see, but couldn't get a clear view so didn't want to commit (which is fair enough). The sonographer at my 20wk scan confirmed it đŸ˜„... baby hasn't arrived yet, though, so we'll see!

What a horrible comment. Do you realise some people who have miscarried absolutely fear scans? And that little slither of excitement can help them get through some tough times? I don't get why mothers are so shamed in this day and age for wanted to know their babies gender.

Oreyt · 21/01/2025 17:29

No opinions. Just facts.

Erm, and I quote, "I hate how people only think of sex at the second scan".

Sounds like an opinion to me. And not a really relevant or supportive one. The OP has clearly been through a lot and is anxious about her upcoming scan, so whilst I don't think it is anyone's job to try and be the board police (and I also get frustrated when people act like the 20 week scan is only to find out the baby's genitalia), I actually think you've got this one wrong and your post was tipping over into mean spirited and unnecessary.

OP, I wish you the very best of luck at your scan. Here's hoping it's good news, boy or girl!

Thanks @sexnotgenders that’s kind đŸ˜˜
