Mixed race babies

Apologies in advance because this is my second post of a similar vane in a week!

But I’m just reaching out to parents of mixed race children. And my question is …

When your child was born, in the early days, how obvious was it that they were from a mixed ethnicity coupling?

I ask because there is a question over the paternity of baby and she is either going to be completely caucasian or half Pakistani.

A DNA test will obviously be going ahead in the early days but I’m just wondering if it’ll be obvious to myself or others before the results.

Thank you.

Hi there x
My husband is Pakistani and baby does not look 100% Caucasian but you can definitely tell the difference between a fully white baby and a mixed with anything else baby does that make sense?

Yellow23 · 05/01/2025 18:14

I think it depends. I’m very fair so it was clear ours had a lot of their darker features from my husband, however if both Caucasian people had brown hair, brown eyes and olive skin, for example, it might not be so obvious (at least in our case). Regardless of race, I will say that most newborns I’ve experienced have come out looking like their dads so if you had access to baby photos that might give you a better indication.

sel2223 · 05/01/2025 18:17

It really does depend.

DH is from the middle east so DD1 is mixed race. When she was born she had brown hair and what looked like olive skin (but I now think was just a bit of jaundice) but wasn't obviously mixed race. Now 4.5 she is about as Caucasian looking as they come - red hair, very fair skin and blue eyes!

Having said that, hair/skin/eye colour aside, she did (and still does) look very much like her Daddy.

BodeAkuna · 05/01/2025 18:21

Very obvious in my case

sunshineandshowers40 · 05/01/2025 18:21

It really depends. DC1 was obviously mixed race, DC2 and DC3 were not. One black parent and one white.

GingerMamm · 05/01/2025 18:52

As above, some of my siblings are clearly mixed-race whereas others look white.

My son is mixed race and you would never know.

You need a DNA test if there’s uncertainty.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 05/01/2025 18:53

DS is mixed Pakistani/British and honestly didn't look 'darker' until age 3 - he still just looks like he has a year round tan.

Lunalovegod · 05/01/2025 19:55

My daughter's father is half Iranian, so she's only a quarter, and you could tell immediately she wasn't full Caucasian. The health visitor pointed it out at our first appointment. However, you'd never know now. By about a month old she looked fully Caucasian, but develops a beautiful tan in summer.

maria2bela1 · 05/01/2025 20:09

You do know you can get paternity tests while pregnant...

lunar1 · 05/01/2025 20:10

Looking back at photos of my two, they were very pale, but with big brown eyes like their Indian dad.

They didn't have any redness to their skin tone that Caucasian babies often had. By a year or so I'd say they were half way between us for skin colour

HoppityBun · 05/01/2025 20:10

Hi OP from personal experience it’s unpredictable.

MaggieBsBoat · 05/01/2025 20:12

My children are half Pakistani and they are white and blue eyed. You would never ever know.

Germanjio · 05/01/2025 20:15

My half Pakistani kids looked totally Caucasian as babies. Both have dark eyes, but one is blonde.

XelaM · 05/01/2025 20:16

Have you seen Anna Ermakova (Boris Becker's daughter)? 😂

The photo was her as a baby.

Can anyone tell she's mixed race? It's Boris in a pram. 😆

xigris · 05/01/2025 20:17

I’m Scottish and have pale skin, grey eyes and really blonde hair. DH is Indian. All of our children were dark at birth - you wouldn’t necessarily know they’re half Indian but next to me they were / are very dark. It will depend on your colouring too, OP.

Me345 · 05/01/2025 21:06

My baby was very very white. Tbh only black people could ever recognise she was mixed by her features, white people just thought she was white. She is 6 now and still very light skinned (darker than me) and has bright blonde curls so still people don’t always recognise that she is mixed race. I think I must have very strong genes. She is half Jamaican

Whattochoose1 · 06/01/2025 18:38

I have two mixed race kids (dad is south Asian) and DC1 looked (and still looks) whiter than me. DC2 is darker but could pass as white.
It really depends.

Nosferfartu · 06/01/2025 18:56

My English friend's husband is Somali, they have one pale blonde child and one much darker child but with blue eyes!

I don't think you can guess what will happen. It's very beautiful the different appearances that will appear.

InkHeart2024 · 06/01/2025 19:08

You may not be able to tell. My DS was born very pale and never got more than pale olive toned (unless he's been in the sun for a couple of weeks and got a tan) - his father has very coiled Afro hair and DS has smooth mid brown curls. He obviously doesn't take after me as I'm pale and blue eyed but you wouldn't have put him as mixed race at birth despite his dad being fairly dark skinned African/arab mix.

FutureFry · 06/01/2025 19:08

My daughter is obviously mixed race and my son isn't
Same dad!

I'm Scottish and very fair, DH is Thai.

GivingUpFinally · 06/01/2025 19:23

Mince are mixed race and you can tell there's a little something there If you look hard enough but they're fair and blue eyed.
With European hair texture, ones hair is dead straight.

I'm half black and look it. Husband is white blonde and blue eyed.

I don't look related to my kids at all.

However when they born they looked mixed race. Darker hair colour, curls and darker skin. Within weeks they did end up looking white.

RightOnTheEdge · 06/01/2025 19:38

My childrens' father has very dark hair and eyes and quite dark olive skin.
My dd looks just like him. When she was born she had a mop of black hair and big dark eyes. The midwives commented on her "tan."
My ds, who has the same father, came out with golden blonde hair, green/blue eyes and really pale.

It's a bit of a lottery OP.

CheeseTime · 06/01/2025 19:42

Friend is white and married to a Pakistani guy. Three DC. All look like a slightly paler Pakistani. Fair golden skin and black hair. (And beautiful).

hangingonfordearlife1 · 06/01/2025 19:46

my husband is iraqi. all my babies looked 100% caucasian and still do at 3, 14 and 17

Yes genetics is so fascinating in this way.

My first two DC are opposite sex but look almost identical facially tbh, although the first was born with a bit more hair despite a shorter gestation so presuming they will have thicker hair in the long run too (the eldest so not sure yet, and they had slightly different coloured eyes - first had bright blue eyes and the second dark blue eyes.

Now as a toddler and young child, both of them have identical coloured hair which is identical to the colour of their dad's hair, but he had completely different coloured hair as a child, so that's really interesting. As maybe their hair will change colour too and end up a different colour to their dad's? The bright blue eyed child has hazel eyes very similar to their dad's too, and the dark blue eyed child has very dark brown eyes, darker than mine, but appears to be getting slowly lighter as they age - I have light brown eyes. Both kids have my olive skin tone (middle eastern heritage).

Baby 3 on the other hand was born with hardly any hair at all, blue-grey eyes, noticeably fairer skin - more Caucasian tone like their dad's, and facially looks completely different to the other two. This one looks so much like their dad in their face. Literally after they were born one of my first thoughts was how different they looked compared to the other two!
