trigger warning: potential MC

Hi all,

Currently 5 weeks 3 days pregnant (hopefully).
To start the story i tested positive at 4 weeks, but had a lighter period (which I thought was implantation bleeding). Since that time I couldn’t stand the taste of digestive biscuits, constantly needed the toilet.
I did start with small brown spotting around Saturday, which I thought was due to increased exercise. It was that small it was barely noticeable to the human eye.

Yesterday I had quite a lot of back ache and was burping constantly. I did notice that my morning sickness was still there but nowhere near as bad as it had been. My hunger and random cravings were waining too.
Many of my friends said ‘that’s normal’ and so I thought nothing of it.
i continued with the tiny tiny spotting, which was orange and brown.
As I was so worried I rang the early pregnancy unit, who advised that if there is anything larger than a 50p or bright red to go to a&e

I think I jinxed myself, because I woke up at 3 am this morning needing the toilet (as usual). Then when I wiped, so much red. I did have some mild cramping but nothing terrible.

my husband rushed me up to a&e and the doctor had a look. Which then caused me to bleed some more. The doctors told us to prepare for the worst, but they aren’t sure so need to go back for a scan which will be around when I am 6 weeks 4 days. They advised to take some paracetamol too just incase the pain starts. Once again no real pain just mild cramps.

the bleeding has slowed and is now brown but I’ve noticed a bit when I wipe.

Has anyone had any similar with a positive outcome, or should my husband and I accept that our journey is over for this time.

Sorry you're going through this it really is horrible. I've had an MC around that time (I'm also 5 weeks 5 days at the moment). When I had my miscarriage I had no bleeding before waking up with severe cramps and then going to the loo and there being a lot of blood with large clots in it. If there are large clots that's usually a sign of the pregnancy tissue coming away. If it's just blood, not clots that could be other things. Though some women MC and get no bleeding so it really does vary. Unfortunately it's just too early for you to know for sure but the next scan should confirm either way.

If you do get bad news... Miscarriage is so common in these early stages. 1 in 4 women will have a miscarriage in their reproductive lifetime. Often in these early stages it's due to chromosomal abnormalities, a lot needs to go right as the cells divide, it's a bit of a lottery. What I focus on is that it's just really bad luck if you get a miscarriage like this, nothing you could've done, and if this is your first MC, the chances of this happening again are really very low. But there are things you can do to improve your egg quality. The book It Starts with the Egg is a useful read and helped me feel like I was at least giving myself the best chance.
