Baby weight - Was your second bigger or smaller than your first?

My first born (now 4) was born by ELCS at 38 weeks and was quite a bit smaller than predicted (no health issues). In fact, she was the smallest baby in the immediate family.

For those that have 2 or more children, was your second baby bigger or smaller than your first?

Does one small baby mean the rest are likely to be small as well?

Just had my second and she's 2lbs 7oz heavier than my first! Born 1 day late while my first was two weeks before her due date.

KnittingKnotting · 07/11/2024 09:07

Slightly bigger. First was 8lb, second was 8lb 7oz but she was born a week later.

larkstar · 07/11/2024 09:22

1st DD 8lbs 14oz but 10 days late
2nd DD 8lbs 10.5oz but 2 weeks early (so would have been bigger if born 10 days late I guess)

jellycat · 07/11/2024 09:26

First was 7lb 8oz. 6 days late. Second was 8lb 5oz. 4 days late. Both boys (girls are on average smaller by about 3-4oz IIRC).

Retnolds · 07/11/2024 09:31

Even though they were born at 38 weeks and 39 weeks respectively, they had identical birth weights.

RolaDisco · 07/11/2024 09:31

Dc 1 was 8 lb on the dot, she was a week overdue.
Dc 2 was 7.12 lbs, born at 38+5 days.

hopingforthemillion · 07/11/2024 09:36

My first was 9lb 8oz
my second was 7lb 6oz (born 5 days earlier than my first)

There’s a noticeable difference in them now in terms of clothing sizes too, my first was more of a bruiser and my second seems a little dot in comparison

mondaytosunday · 07/11/2024 09:38

Smaller, but she is female and my first is male.

LoveSandbanks · 07/11/2024 09:47

1st was 9lb at 16 days late
2nd was 10lb at 10 days late
3rd was 9lb 8 bang on time

All boys

My gp told me that statistically, the 2nd is generally the largest baby.

the first birth (the smallest) was without doubt the hardest due to his position (posterior) the other 2 were born at home.

user2848502016 · 07/11/2024 09:57

Yeah mine were 8lb2 and 8lb7, my second was way longer than my first too.
I actually think my youngest would have been lighter if I hadn't been on a drip

BookishType · 07/11/2024 10:00

Second was 7.13, first was 9.3. Both boys and full term.

Seeline · 07/11/2024 10:03

DS 7lb 3, on due date
DD 8lb, 12 days late

But with DD I hadn't had HG for the first 17 weeks, nor did I have whooping cough at 7 months pg.

Rainbow1901 · 07/11/2024 10:18

1st 6lb 7 and half ounces. Born one day before due date.
2nd 8lb and 1 ounce. Little toe rag was too comfy and went 17days past due date!!

Lovelysummerdays · 07/11/2024 10:23

First 8lb 11, second 9lb 2 both born at 39 weeks

PubicZirconia · 07/11/2024 10:23

Eldest DS - 1 day late, emergency C -8lb 6
Youngest DS - Planned C - 6lb 1.

Huge difference in size between them years later,DS1 has a Rugby player build,DS2 has a slight, jockey-type build.

DS2 by far is the most,um, assertive 😁

sunshineandshowers40 · 07/11/2024 13:55

Third was my biggest and second was my smallest.

BeckyWithTheGoodBear · 07/11/2024 13:59

DS1 8.10
DS2 7.03
DS3 9.00
DS4 7.07

All the same gestation and no diabetes.

sel2223 · 07/11/2024 14:08

I asked my mum about the 4 of us

DD1 8lbs 2oz (38+1)
DD2 7lbs 12oz (39+2)
DD3 7lbs 7oz (40+6)
DS1 9lbs 4oz (40)

So the biggest girl was the earliest and the smallest girl was the latest 🤷‍♀️

Smaller - first was 8lb 13oz second felt like he was going to be 10lb but was actually 8lb 6oz!

Noodlesnotstrudels · 10/12/2024 16:20

DD1 - 2.6kg / 5lbs 12oz (38w)
DD2 - 2.8kg / 6lbs 3oz (39+3)

Had hypertension with DD1 and then preeclampsia with DD2 so think their growth was affected. Both of them have settled on a higher centile than their birth centile after the 1st year, more in line with mine and DH height.

Nc546888 · 10/12/2024 22:28

DC1 2 weeks early 7lb 3

DC2 2 weeks early 6lb 2
