Morning all! Two days into finding out I am pregnant with our second baby, DS is 11 months old and we're over the moon! I have an early scan tomorrow and I calculate I will be 5+1, has anyone had a scan around this time and if so what have you been able to see? With our first we had the scan at 6 weeks and heard the heartbeat but I realise this may be a little too early. I was 36 when I conceived our first and I'm now 38 so it's always made me a bit paranoid because of falling into an older age range! So bloody nervous the wait feels like forever already and it's only just begun 😩

Hi OP, congratulations!! I'm 41, almost 42, and 19 weeks pregnant and all going great up till now. I had my first at 37 and no-one batted an eyelid since I was still under 40.

With a 5 week scan, please make sure you go in with very, very low expectations as there will likely be nothing to see. A scan this early is usually only for medical reasons and to check it has implanted in the right place and rule out ectopic.
You may see a gestational sac but that's likely all you will see and it will probably be empty. 5/6 days later and you'd hope to see a yolk sac and fetal pole but that's all assuming you didn't ovulate later than you think. Between 6 and 7 weeks is normally when you see an embryo and the flicker of a heartbeat.

Is it a private scan? If I were you I'd put it back at least a week or, even better, 2 unless you have any worrying symptoms?

A scan this early won't tell you anything about the viability of the pregnancy.

@sel2223 thanks so much for replying and so happy to hear you're having a healthy pregnancy! What you've said is very reassuring and makes a lot of sense, it's a private scan and they have said that 6 weeks on is when you're more likely to hear the heartbeat etc so I am tempted to wait for another week or so. I had the same anxiety the first time round and ended up going for scans nearly every month just convinced that something was going to go wrong. It was absolutely crippling and I always thought I'd feel more confident the second time yet here I am again with the same fear and anxiety 😥

I had a scan with my youngest at 5wks 4days and other than being able up confirm I was pregnant there was nothing to see. No fetal pole or heartbeat.

the good news is that he is now 2 and full of energy and healthy.
